Question for the ladies regarding PMS

Posted: Feb 11, 2013

I just have a question.  I just turned 38 years old.  In the past, with my menstrual cycle, I never had "PMS" symptoms, never had cramps or cravings or "attitude" or anything.  I have noticed within the past year that I have become INCREDIBLY cranky just before my menstrual cycle.  I have noted that within the past few months, it is BEYOND cranky.  Sometimes, I am just so aggravated that I seriously feel like I have so much built in anger that I want to punch a wall!  I have no earthly idea what I am angry about and that is nowhere near my personality.  Yesterday, my husband was driving and we got into a very small disagreement and I got so mad that I got out of the vehicle when he was at a stop sign and told him I was walking home!  I was yelling and he was in disbelief, begging me to get back in the car, as he had never seen me that way.  Later, once I thought about it, I have no idea why I would have reacted in such a way, and again, it is a few days before my period.

Has anyone else experienced these changes as they got older and is there anything that can be done about it.  I try to stay clear of estrogens, because I smoke and I worry about the whole breast cancer thing.  Anything natural perhaps or anything someone else found that works?

Thanks so much, I feel like a crazy woman!

I can surely empathize with you! I'm 45 and I have had your symptoms for probably about 5 or 6 years now. I don't know of anything that helps, and I too stay away from estrogens because I smoke and because they trigger my migraines. Other symptoms I experience in addition to the anger and rage are depression, sudden crying spells, extreme fatigue, weird food cravings, leg swelling, and breast discomfort... Oh and menstrual cramping like crazy!

I have had 5 children, and with each baby's birth, my menstrual cycles became more and more irregular. I always had the menstrual cramps, but NEVER anything other than that. I'd love to know any secrets to helping with these symptoms too. My NP told me I'm perimenopausal, and that's what most of the symptoms are related to. I also have extreme fits of hot flashes and night sweats.

Sometimes the rage that I feel is uncontrollable, much like you described with your encounter with your husband. My husband just tells me point blank that I'm being a B****, LOL. He just knows when it's my time, and he usually avoids me or steps lightly so to speak.

I can vouch for feeling crazy! I also have extreme insomnia, which hits me about 3 to 4 days before my period starts, and I might go at least 3 nights with little or no sleep. Sure wish my period would stop all together and all of these symptoms would go away...the sooner the better!

I have not had a period in 4 years (thank goodness - early menopause runs in my family. I am only 45). However PMS symptoms can still be harsh. I started taking Relacor 2 years ago (initially for weight loss) but it has also helped my "moodiness." It takes the edge off of my "pissed offness modes." Just a suggestion :)

Don't know any good remedies, but same as you, worse as I got older. - sm

I never experienced cramps or major emotional swings in my youth and couldn't really understand what my friends were complaining about, but as I got older, I began to learn. Also, I may just be talking out my hat about this, but I think many who have it worse earlier on have it get better and easier for them as time goes on and then vice-versa for those like us. You either pay up front or you pay later, no escaping it. ;)

Oh, and just a warning, your periods can get even more irregular and closer together as you approach menopause. I expected the opposite, at least in terms of frequency. It's the last hurrah to get those left-over eggs out as quickly as possible, I guess. And it's like being a teenager again in terms of not knowing when to expect them, ugh.

Evening Primrose. I've been taking 2000 mg daily for about 6 years. Tried to go off this summer as I thought maybe I didn't need it anymore. Symptoms came back, so I'm back on it.

My PMS didn't kick in until AFTER my hysterectomy. Guess my ovaries got lonely or upset they were left behind or something because they kicked in with a vengeance. (Took me awhile to figure out I wasn't crazy and that my symptoms were following a cycle even though I wasn't having a period anymore. Now THAT will make you feel crazy!) Like you I was having bursts of uncharacteristic flat-out anger as well as other PMS symptoms like breast tenderness, fatigue, etc. My doctor told me to try evening primrose as she & I both wanted to avoid any prescription meds.

Of course, talk to your doctor before starting ANY new medications/supplements/OTC meds!

Good luck!

I'm in perimenopause with no clue when my periods will come and have been ridiculously angry over stupid things. When I told my hubby about it, he joked, "I'll steer clear then." :) I don't know how to rein in the anger (thankfully it hasn't happened lately) but I suppose next time it happens, I'll just leave the room to go scream in my closet.

One for the ladies One day my housework-challenged husband decided to wash his Sweatshirt. Seconds after he stepped into the laundry room, he shouted to me, "What setting do I use on the washing machine?" "It depends," I replied. "What does it say on your shirt?" He yelled back, "University of Oklahoma." And they say blondes are dumb... A couple is lying in bed. The man says, "I am going to make you the happiest woman in the world." The woman replies, "I'll miss you..." "It's j ...

LADIESMar 01, 2010
So, I was watching a television show.  I guess it's become the new "thing" for older women to prey on younger men, and the younger men to look for "cougars".  Wondering, how young would you go?  One of the women on the show was 54 (she looked really good, but had a lot of work done...) and regularly dated men in their 20s!  That to me is way to young.  My feeling is, if you're old enough to be a mom or grandmother, best to stick to your age "box".   ...

Some good common sense and an irate reaction to Trump here, so probably this might be only for those of us who do not like Donald Trump - definitely a liberal cast to this blog, but what the heck I have to skim through those diatribes from the Heritage Foundation and that awful Judge Jeanine, so about time to spread a bit of progressive wealth of knowledge. I have not put the entire post - bear in mind the beginning is very good and will make you laugh out loud, so please read if you are so inc ...

Many years ago I was married and my husband had this thing of leaving, just leaving without any problems going on. No money issues, no arguments, just up and leaving, sometimes for months. I started an on the job affair with a guy, eventually leaving the marriage because the new love was hot, hot, hot! The on the job affair lasted for a year or more, even years later we reconnected for a short period. Fond memories. ...

So....what Did You Ladies Think Of Magic Mike?Jul 06, 2012
I thought the language was a little much....I mean, come on, nobody cusses and uses the F word that much, do they?  Aside from that, I thought the story was cute, and the dancing was pretty hot.  I have never been to a male strip tease show, but I am told that men make more at it than women. It's funny because all of the women in our family, and large circle of friends, went together.  It is really not a good movie for men (even if they were gay).  None of the men, of c ...

What Skin Products Do You Ladies Use?Feb 04, 2013
I have older (40) skin that is acne prone. I'm looking for a skin product that doesn't over dry as acne products can sometimes do because my skin is older and now wrinkle prone too. I use neutrogena moisturizer, aveeno dry skin oatmeal bar, and retin A. I only wear foundation maybe once or twice a week (neutrogena). I know it's the products that are causing me to break out because I used to use Rhonda Allison and didn't break out, my skin looked great, however, Rhonda All ...

I looking for a new skin care regimen.  I'm 44 and have a round, chubby face which I used to hate, but now realize it has prevented me from getting a lot of wrinkles.  I have a few fine lines around my eyes and those parentheses around my mouth, if you know what I mean.  I'm looking for something to prevent future wrinkles and to work on what I have.  I have freckles and have sun damaged my skin when I was younger, so my skin is blotchy without makeup. I'm always facinated at some people who think all social problems and situations are so black and white.Abortion is here to stay, whether it's legal or not, just like it's always been an option when a woman finds herself facing the impossible situation of an unwanted pregnancy. It doesn ...

Cat Question Aug 05, 2011
Don't know if you remember my last posts awhile back about a stray cat we started feeding and took care, gave her shelter for the winter and she had kittens.  We've taken the kittens in and adore them all.  Now...here she is 3 or 4 months later, every once in awhile I'll get a glimpse of her nursing them.  Vet told us milk has to be dried up before they can fix her.  However, she is a stray and she has been going out walking around the neighborhood like she has ...

QuestionMar 22, 2010
Okay, here is a question that I have not seen come up here.  While watching news today this just crossed my mind.  If the government sets an insurance rate you have to pay based upon what you make per year, do they take into account all your other bills, and that sometimes as ICs we don't get any work coming in at times, and then what they set is more than what you can afford (i.e. more money than your paycheck and you still have to pay all your bills).  As ICs I'm sure ...
