ahhh one of my favorite subjects! - saving money too

I save the most from going to garage/yard sales and thrift stores. Anytime I can buy used always saves. I buy clothes, shoes, household decor, books, etc. and save so much. Last weekend, I went to several yard sales and for $20.00 I bought a boatload of stuff; a beautiful rustic storage cabinet for my house, a purse, home decor, a bread maker, a planter made of decorative wood, shelves, pillows, etc, all for no more than $20.00. I also save a lot by going to Costco and buy in bulk and use the Vons 4 U digital coupons. Also, by using the Vons 4 U, I earn gas points and save on my gas. I can fill up a 15-gallon tank in my car for about $48.00. (I live in California, so prices are a bit high here). I also follow blogs, the prudent homemaker, hillbilly housewife, better budgeting to name a few.

I am always learning and reading and studying how to stretch a buck and pay less for what I need. I also cook from scratch which helps a lot. I am going to start to make my own cleaning products too.

I am curious what others do too. I am always interested and learn from every source I can :-)

I love Nomorerack. Find sheets, computers, etc - curiousMT

Never disappointed in the quality and savings of approx 70% off retail.

Thanks for the tip about nomorerack.com! I just placed an order! I had never heard of it before. I compared the prices to some at Walmart and Target, and nomorerack.com does have better prices. Shipping is cheap, too.

I went to check them out, as well - and was hit with the big word

of SCAM!! There were many complaints about receiving inferior materials, if any at all, and just as many complaints of credit card fraud. Good luck with that one. that is one place I will be staying away from!

I go to thrift stores. The store near my house has everything half price on Mondays. They have decent items there. There is a second hand store for children that I go to for clothes for my granddaughter. The clothes have hardly been worn.

I forgot to mention I also go to flea markets. There is a favorite one I have. Unfortunately they are only open on Sundays and not when the weather gets cold (starting towards the end of October). I bought a new laser jet printer cartridge for only $5. It was not even opened. Normally, the one I use runs at least $125 if you buy it in an office store and through E bay at least $50.00. I also got a food mill for $2.00.

I have become very resourceful over the last few years (student, single mom, MT, and now currently unemployed). I coupon. I now believe you should never pay for toothbrushes, shavers and other such items because with a little planning and couponing, they can be free. I have a stockpile. I also use Safeway Just 4 U. I look for deals. I freeze veggies and fruit. I shop at yard sales and flea markets for good deals on everything. I've bought everything from clothes to Oxyclean box for a $1. I buy what is on sale, either to stock up or for the week. This week Savemart has 89 cent 5-lb bags of potatoes. I plan on preparing and freezing different potato dishes and having them for the winter.

I spend wisely, but I also try to remember I need to have fun too. If I save money on food and necessities, I can have treats for my daughter and I.

Couponing doesn't always mean buying just what you need. Sometimes it makes sense to buy something because you will get overage or make money (in Extra Cash Bucks at CVS) and be able to get items that you need for free. Now I'm not buying 40 mustards that are free, but if something is free or a money maker (by combining store coupon with manufacturer coupon), I will purchase something and find another purpose for it. Family loves getting bags of freebies for Christmas or just because. You can donate to homeless shelters or even sell some items. By making $ on items they offer on sale, I can use the $ to buy the things we need.

I go to the thrift stores, too. My favorite has 25% off on all Mondays, 50% on Monday holidays. Goodwill has senior days on Wednesdays, they're 25% off I think. I have really gotten some great stuff though I put sheers and heavy drapes in my whole house (15 regular windows and 4 high casement windows) for less than $150. Man I'm proud of that! The sheers were all Penney's and the heavy curtains were Pottery Barn velvet that sold for $105 a PANEL retail!

Goodwill. Good sewing machine. Good friends. - Good bicycle. Good scavenging skills.

Low-income rate on electricity & gas. Shopping the local discount grocery store, and learning to be flexible and opportunistic when buying meal components, and learning to substitute ingredients. Coupons (only using the ones for things I actually need). Investing what little money you have in things that will save you money over and over down the road. For me, it was a mini clothes washer & dryer set for my apartment, which easily paid for itself the first year I had it. I burn one light at a time, and turn every other light off when I'm not in the room. I unplug most of my appliances (except this laptop) when I'm not using them. No room for a freezer, so I buy perishable foods (meat, fruit, vegetables, etc.)in small amounts; otherwise, I toss out too much spoiled food.

Make extra by posting on craigslist and offer to do stuff for a fee, SM - MT2

buy products in bulk, break the cases into smaller boxes and sell on Amazon.com, charge a fee to provide Facebook likes to companies, get rid of cable TV and use Netflix or the like, buy cheaper cuts of meat. I buy the manager's specials when they are reduced.

Also, if you own a home raise the deductible, SM - MT52

and this might not be feasible for you, but I'm moving out of the city as soon as I can to another county with a lower tax rate.

Yard Sales!!!!!!! - Love them!

I love, love, love yard sales! I find my kids clothes for $1.00 per piece all of the time. They are brand name, gently used clothes, just fine for school or whatever and the kids love it too!

You know what I find funny about this post? - MT

Every single one of you are trying to find ways to save money. One posted never buying a toothbrush or razors because you can get them FREE! Another posted going to different websites where it is cheaper than even Walmart or Target. Another posted going to garage sales to find a cheaper used product than buying new. What makes any single one of you any different than our current MTSO's trying to save a buck here and there? You guys are the hospitals trying to save a massive amount of money, while the people who make the razors and the toothbrushes (those people I am comparing to MTs) that you have vowed never to pay for again are getting their wages cut because you want these items for free and the companies that are paying them can only give away free products for so long before having to cut costs. You are EXACTLY the same as the MTSO's, but instead you aren't paying a ton of peoples' wages nor messing with a ton of peoples' schedules to get work completed. No, I am not an MTSO, just one of the successful MTs on here that listen to you all gripe about how the wages have gone down, this career is a joke, and MTSOs are greedy. Well, you are an MTSO, just on a different individual level. Everyone is out for themselves and saving a buck in their wallet. When are you going to get that through your heads now that you see you are the same exact way!

Hmm...I've wondered that myself... - AMT

After watching Extreme Couponing and Extreme Cheapskates and the like, I got so excited to be like them. I still do coupon though just not that extreme. And no matter how broke I get, I will pay for dental floss or get samples from my dentist so I don't have to share. Did anyone see the commercial for EC showing that couple who shares the same string of floss? GAG!

Anyway, however, I do have to wonder if even say 10% of the population goes to extremes to save, then will that perpetuate layoffs and losing overhead and businesses closing? For example, getting 200 toothbrushes free means not buying them, for the rest of your life probably, and each toothbrush given away is a loss of $4.99 (for example). Now multiple that times 200, that's $998 lost to the toothbrush company. How do they make up that loss? Either laying off employees or raising their prices to the actual paying consumers. I'm no economics expert and I still love to coupon and save and get a great deal, but that thought is in the back of my mind if such a thing is a possibility.

Another thing, so sick of people saying raise minimum wage....um, then the price of everything else will go up too! You will never get ahead. But what do I know?

You are exactly right - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
You are totally right on the whole minimum wage thing. That is EXACTLY what would happen if minimum wage was raised. Why? Because the business owners will always want to bring in their same income or a little more. They will never take the cut out of their own pocket...just as we MTs won't take the extra cut out of our pocket to shop somewhere more expensive.

He's Just Saving Jobs By TheJun 23, 2017
I knew these jobs were going yet Trump promised they wouldn't.  Workers are feeling betrayed.  Carrier was even given a 7-million dollar incentive and they are still going.  I feel really bad for the people who elected this jerk and believed him, like the Carrier employees and the coal workers.  I also saw on the news today that Boeing is laying off a bunch of people.  Where are all these jobs he promised????????? ...

Republicans Are Saving MT!Jul 13, 2017
Isn't it wonderful that they are systematically going through the states that increased minimum wage so that the MT companies can continue to employ MTs in those states for slave wages.  We are so lucky to have the Republicans at the helm!  What an honor to do this job that used to pay $40,000-$50,000 a year, now for $8 an hour.  Woo-hoo!     ...

Saving Money With CouponsDec 06, 2009
Hey ladies - I have a new website that is a great help in saving money while using coupons.  It is called thegrocerygame.com.  It does cost a nominal fee after the first month, but I have found it so worth it.  I think it is about a dollar a week plus the cost of buying your newspapers weekly to get the coupons.  It really works good for you though. I had never used coupons until I was at my sister's last week and she had a closet full of stuff that she was st ...

I just have to tell somebody this - I joined a coupon club online a couple of weeks ago and posted about it and what great deals I was getting, but today is the best...  I got 2 12-pack double rolls of Northern toilet paper, a bag of kibbles and bits, a large box of tide detergent, 2 packs of Rayovac batteries and I only spent $7 out of my pocket!!!   I also got groceries (spent $237 on $473 today) and have so much that I am going to share some of it with my in-laws and my famil ...

What's Your Trick For Saving Money Now?Dec 21, 2009
Just wondering what each person is doing now to save money? I personally am still spending every penny I earn at the moment trying to pay bills - but, I have more to pay because I am clipping coupons and using them when things are on sale at a really cheap deal...  We have also started recycling plastic, paper, and cardboard as we pay by the pound to dispose of our garbage and recycleables are free if you separate them out yourself. Any more ideas? ...

More Money-Saving TipsOct 15, 2013
I had wanted to respond to money-saving ideas but didn't get to it until the post was way, way down the screen! I go to the Goodwill or Salvation Army. These days, they're like regular shops. Everything is clean, not ripped or stained or anything. The ones by us have the racks color-coded---if you want a pink shirt, you go to the shirts and from there, the pink shirts are all in a row. If you need green pants, you go to where the pants are, and the green pants are all in a row. T ...

Talk About Saving Money On My Wedding...Oct 15, 2009
Well, yesterday we went downtown to get our license and our excitement got the best of us.  We ended up having the ceremony performed on the spot and walked out as husband and wife, lol!  Total cost was $79, as compared to the approximately $250 I had managed to shave it down to by having the wedding at our apartment. We've decided to use the October 31st date as our 'reception,' and instead of having the actual ceremony on that date, we're turning it into a cele ...
