Let's talk candles...Advice wanted

Posted: Sep 20, 2013

I need to buy some candles, wax warmers, etc., for my office and was just wondering about something. Is there really any difference between the brand-name candles (Scentsy, Yankee, Gold Canyon) versus the common varieties, such as Better Home and Gardens, Glade, etc., that can be purchased in a regular store? I know very high-end candles, such as Diptyque, as the very, very best, but can no longer afford such luxuries on my earnings. I'm hearing mixed reviews and just curious as to unbiased opinions. ;

Advise you to avoid them entirely - sm

They create a huge amount of indoor air pollution. They are very, very bad for your respiratory system. Read the labels, too. They are loaded with toxic chemicals. Glade is one of the worst.

You should not "need" scented candes in your office. If there is an odor you are trying to cover, eliminate it.

Yes, avoid them - Golden Gal

I have asthma and my pulmonologist said scented candles are one of the worst things for people--even people without asthma.

totally agree - these are chemicals! - nm

Yes, definite difference - .

I like using the wax melts using an electric wax burner - no fuss with anything burning (and safer for my two cats' whiskers). I've tried many different varieties including the Dollar Store kind. Those smell hardly at all. Yankee Candle wax melts smell wonderful but can be a bit pricey. I found the Better Homes and Gardens ScentSational wax melts (they come in six-pack cubes) at Walmart, and those have become my favorite. Lots of different scents and cheaper than Yankee Candle. The smell travels throughout the house. The smell lasts for quite a while, too.

I love nice smells and find when I'm not burning one, I miss it!

dear god yes!!! Glade is pretty much a waste of $$$ - Top 3 are

Yankee Candle, Bath and Body Works and Scentsy, if you want flameless. Bath and Body works actually has an event going on right now you can get 2 for $22 of the 3 wicked candles. That may sound expensive but the candles are amazing and I actually have to blow them out because they are pretty strong. Pumpkin Pecan Pie is my fav right now!

The cheapest ones are Yankee tarts. I have found them as low as 50 cents on sale on their online store. I have a candle jar warmer and I have a thin bottomed glass jar i crumble up the tarts in. Plus their shipping is only $5

I actually used to sell Scentsy but due to company policy (they are so strict-you can't advertise your product on facebook, etc.) I left about 4 months ago. I only get them once in a while because I feel like for the price versus the amount of time they last they are the most expensive. But there are some scents I love and just can't live without.

All that being said anything from Walmart is pretty much a waste of money. I think people who think the Walmart stuff is good maybe haven't tried these other companies????? I"m a scent fanatic so maybe it's just me lol

Why are you wasting money - xx

[ In Reply To ..]
on candles? If money is tight, the last thing you need is scented candles. Buy a few plain wax candles to use for power outages if you must, but leave the stinky ones for people with more money than sense.

This is a hoot! - xx

Given the ratio of dislikes to likes, it seems we don't need to look far to determine why so many Americans are financial train wrecks. Even people who know they have limited financial resources are throwing their money away on useless crap like scented candles and "collectibles" and all manner of stuff nobody needs.

Time to buy stock in Yankee Candle. Their products are apparently as addictive as crack!

Get over yourself. - .

Why wasting money is logical question. I'm currently - in the same boat. SM
[ In Reply To ..]
I've been terminated and my most pressing issue right now is where can I cut expenses. The OP stated she has meager earnings, so it's completely foolish to waste money on candles.

Generic everything, small amounts of everything until I see if unemployment comes through or not. A few pennies saved here and there could put food on my plate in a few weeks or help keep a roof over my head in the next month or so.

I'd rather buy food than candles right now. It really is stupid to waste money on something like that. Then she'll be whining in a few months her candles are gone and she has no money to buy food.

It's true.
to each his own. Waste of money is subjective - I think spending money on
[ In Reply To ..]
beer and cigarettes are wastes IMO. Some people think bottled water is a waste of money. Don't judge the OP because she allows herself a small indulgence, no matter what her budget. You must find some joy in this life or it's not worth living.
nobody's business what others - curly
[ In Reply To ..]
spend their OWN money on, as long as it hurts no one.
It's not logical to turn your nose up - at people for buying candles.
[ In Reply To ..]
She was being judgmental over something as stupid as candles. I don't find that logical.

So yes, why waste money? is logical. To go off on a tangent on financial train wrecks of America because someone asked a question about a cheap candle, is not.

She's trying to save money, so she's looking for a cheaper product. Not exactly a reason to be berated, especially when some of the suggestions are for candles as cheap as 50 cents.

Wax melts are safer b/c no flame and last longer... - AMT

[ In Reply To ..]
However, I use them or regular candles for special occasions, holidays, etc. I have a candle/mug warmer too and buy a jar candle to go on top and it lasts forever b/c you never light it.

For light only/power outages, I use a cheap 50-count bag of plain white tealights from Menards. They last about 2 hours. Good for emergencies.

As far as odor control, I just use Lysol or Febreze on every fabric in my house twice a week and that does the trick. You can search online for homemade Febreze too as that can get expensive. I'm a couponer so I wait for sales and then stock up when I can.

I also use the Glade automatic sprayer. I only have one in my 1100 sq foot home and having the setting on every 90 minutes. My house smells clean and it lasts for 2 months. I also coupon for that too.

I love PartyLite candles and Yankee, but I ration those off like fancy perfume. Not for every day. Walmart has decent candles too but alot of people do not have them lit long enough and that's how they get pitting. Also use leftover wax as a sachet in closets.

An open box of baking soda in each closet or corner works as well and is safe for animals who may eat it and it can be used as carpet sprinkles too for vacuuming. And it's cheap!

Can you explain something, please? - Wondering

[ In Reply To ..]
I am not trying to be snarky here, but I just don't understand something.

What exactly is it in your home that you are trying to cover up? What stinks?

What about every fabric stinks so that you are forced to spray with Febreze? What stench is the Glade sprayer covering up?

If your home is so dirty that it stinks, why don't you just clean it??

sooo, just to recap, you WEREN'T being snarky? - curly

[ In Reply To ..]
"if your home is so dirty that it stinks, why don't you just clean it?" wow, i'd hate to see you when you ARE being snarky. maybe some people just like a scent of, i don't know, maybe pumpkin pie in the fall even though they don't have time today to bake, or maybe a woodsy smell that reminds them of something nice in their childhood. boy oh boy, this post about something as un-political as candles sure reminds me that ANYTHING can offend ANYONE. offended by someone else liking scented candles. you must be great to live with.
Post said for ODOR CONTROL. - That is why I asked WHAT STINKS
[ In Reply To ..]
NM
what may stink is usually subjective - just saying
[ In Reply To ..]
For example, my father lived the last 20-30 years of his life fighting what he thought was an odor coming from his feet. He would soak his feet, scrape off the dead skin, lather them in lotion, put different powder products in his shoes, wear only cotton socks, but he was never satisfied that he was controlling the odor. No one else EVER noticed an odor (well, unless we put a nose INSIDE one of his shoes). The odor was subjective to him only.

Now that I'm older, I'm the same way. I can smell cat odors in a home as soon as the door is opened. It does not mean the house has an over-flowing litter box. Usually there is a clean litter box, but I can smell it over everything else. It is subjective to me.

Odors, like opinions, are subjective to the individuals involved.
but you DIDN'T just ask what stinks - curly
[ In Reply To ..]
you said - if your home is so DIRTY, why don't you clean it? that's not an insult? you didn't mean to be snarky. no, you just meant to be nasty.

Dear Wondering... - AMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I did not read your reply to be snarky at all. In answer to your question, I was more or less "helping" the OP by giving her some ideas about candles and since she did not specify what the candles were for, I just gave an overview on them. Some people use candles as lighting as in a lamp or to set the mood or as ambience or aromatherapy or help with smells. And since I didn't know which one applied to her, I was just suggesting something more cost effective than candles since they usually only are smelled/enjoyed in the room they are in. My house is not dirty by any means. I do have a dog however and just like to have a nice clean smelling home w/o burning a bunch of candles all the time b/c they can be toxic and a waste of money if used 24/7. Back when I was house hunting, I walked through a house that had smokers and they burned candles 24/7 and it smelled bad! No candle can cover up cigarette smoke and all the ceilings were just gray from the soot/smoke. It was gross. Needless to say, I didn't buy that house. Anyway, no offense taken, I was just throwing out some ideas on candles and the like. I'm not a hoarder or a slob. I just like the scent of Febreze. I also love smelling Pinesol, so maybe I'm kind of weird. LOL

Looks like no one here answered your question. Just a bunch of negative Nancies!

While I love Yankee Candle and Bath and Body Works candles, I've also bought some from Kohl's and some that are no-name brand and I really don't see much difference. In my opinion, basically you are just paying for the name.

I know you're asking about candles, but after all - the info on their toxicity

[ In Reply To ..]
how about essential oils? You can use reeds in your diffuser and you don't have to light anything. Also you can customize your scent that way.

Sorry, this was supposed to be in response to the OP - nm

I just read all of the responses to your simple question about candles and wax warmers. It appears to me that even the Gab Board has been taken over by some very unhappy people and that's a shame.

Anyway, at the risk of being booed and hissed at for my humble opinion, here goes. I have found that a simple inexpensive candle warmer and whatever candles I have around the house work great for me. I always seem to have a number of different brands of candles, most of which were given to me as presents. As an added bonus, the candles last almost forever with the warmer and no fumes or black soot-like material on my walls from burning the candles.

Oh and yes, my curious kitties thank me because they get to keep their whiskers! :)

Well, for example - justme

One reason could be living in a house with a septic tank and not supposed to flush TP down the toilet, as is the case with us. If we do not use some sort of "purty" sent, then after a while the BR will stink because you-know-what is in the wastebasket. And don't say why don't you simply use the plastic bags the groceries came in, I do, but I have to be conservative with them because I use them to pick up after the dogs during their walk and do not want to buy trash bag liners while receiving a MT's salary. Nuff said.

Our house had a septic tank, but we flushed - our TP.

[ In Reply To ..]
I can't imagine having to put it in the waste basket! I've never been at a house where you couldn't flush it, septic or not. Why can't you flush it?

We have moved in with MIL - justme

[ In Reply To ..]
We all live in a 5-bedroom house that was part of an original Arthurdale homestead in Arthurdale, West Virginia. You could google Arthurdale and Eleanor Roosevelt if you were really interested in the history. Anyway, this was an experimental community which was Eleanor's project. It was a planned community built in the 1930s for poor coal miners, and MIL's mom and dad were fortunate enough to be selected to have a homestead. The homes were built on 7 acres of land, I believe, and a few cows, horses, pigs, chickens, etc. were provided, as well as a root cellar. The homes were very nice for their time and all had a flush toilet---pretty nice for the 1930s.

I have no idea whether they have the original septic system or not, but that has always been the policy there in the household, no flushing of TP. With MIL's 10 siblings, I imagine that was a good policy back then!!! I suppose we could empty the wastebasket more often and it would not be a problem.
