Just wanted to share....Over the years...

I have been asked on many occasions if I could show people how to do what I do because "I know you make a ton of money". Today, that comment is good for a never ending laugh!

I did want to share my two favorites. Driving through the local Burger King, the gal that handed me my food asked me what I did for a living. I love this part- I told her and she said, "oh, how nice". When I gave her a little more detail, she said she was SURE she could do it. Her mom worked for a psychologist and she has heard "all the words" so, there you are.

Then, in the hospital where I worked, I was wearing my badge with MT on it and a nurse asked me if I liked the work, I said oh heck yes! She told me she was starting a medical transcription class soon and I wished her luck. I ran into her a few months later and I asked her how it went. She said, "I take my hat off to you. I failed and went back to nursing, changed my schedule a bit and am happy". You know that made me feel really good. We as MTs have lost so much of that pride due to cuts, sending our work out of the country, giving foreigner's more work than they give us in the USA. I don't know what went wrong or where. I am not a wide eyed young thing and have been around. I know that corporations save money if they can cut the fat but, WE ARE NOT the fat they need to cut. I pray every night for you and me. And I will retire soon but, as the lady said to me, "my hat is off to you who choose to do this day in and day out". My very best wishes to you all.

I've had people either look at me puzzled or like you said on-site at the hospital where I worked tip their hats for the work we did as MTs. They couldn't believe we could decipher it. The OR nurses were truly amazed as they said listening to the doctors dictate sounded like one long sentence of mush! LOL

It's truly a gift to be able to do this job day in and day out. I do love MT work. I can't really imagine life without it. I don't think I'd be truly happy not doing it, but that's just me.

The deregulation that happened in the 80s under Ronald Reagan started the snowball that led to Big Business doing whatever it wanted to make a bigger buck. Poor Ronald Reagan. He was a decent man who thought other people were decent, too. The sad truth is that conscience is not enough. I can't think of an industry that hasn't been affected by the 1% doing whatever it took to make more money for themselves and to heck with the workers.

My favorite comment about my job that I ever got was from the cashier at my favorite thrift store. She asked what I do and when I told her medical transcription, she said that would be perfect for her because she doesn't have a high school diploma! Like just anybody can do it. I just had to shake my head. My sister, who has worked in healthcare for many years, took one class of MT at our community college and knew right then it wasn't for her. I also find it so funny that people think they can do this without any training. People sometimes seem actually shocked when I tell them I went to school to learn it!

I also LOVE medical transcription, and I truly truly enjoy my work. Sadly, having just lost yet another account to templates/EMR though, I must admit I'm feeling like there's not much future in it anymore, and that makes me very sad.

I'd like to share my pea soup recipe, and would like other ideas as well. I don't measure things, so just use your own judgment, likes/dislikes. Use a very heavy pot like an enamel pot or dutch oven.
