My 5-yo grandson wanted to help 911 victims.

Posted: Sep 12, 2011

My daughter's college roommate lost both of her parents on Flight #93 a month before her wedding.  Truly said even though we did not actually know them.  My daughter has kept in touch with this roommate.  They live close to one another and their kids go to the pool together a lot.

When my daughter was watching some of the 9/11 memorials yesterday she became a little teary and her son asked her what was wrong.  She tried to explain things to him on his level.  He asked her if she knew anyone that died that day and she said no, but that his playmates lost their grandparents that day and never had the chance to know them.  He said, "Awwwh - I am going to call them and tell them I will share my Nana with them."  Then he asked her if there were any kids out there that needed a good mommy and daddy if their's died.  She knew where that was going.  She busted out in tears and called me and we talked it over again and shared the sadness, just like we did 10 years ago when she was in college.  So very many people affected, young and old, far and close, and into the next generations.  I prayed for peace.

Too busy slamming/defending the president to remember 9/11. - How sad is that?

[ In Reply To ..]

I've been waiting since yesterday, wondering how long it would take for someone to stop long enough to remember 911.  So here, out of the mouth of 5-year-old child, comes our first and moist poignant reminder.  The rest of us would be hard pressed to post a tribute more fitting than his.  Thanks, grandma, for sharing this moment.  You must be so proud.

While waiting and wondering, I collected the following infomation since this spectacle and the messages being thrown down somehow reminded me of sections contained in Al Queda's Strategy to the Year 2020, broken down into 5 stages (as summarized by Abdel Bari Atwan):

  1. Provoke the United States into invading a Muslim country.   Check.

  2. Incite local resistance to occupying forces.  Check.

  3. Expand the conflict to neighboring countries, and engage the U.S. in a long war of attrition.  Check.

  4. Convert al-Qaeda into an ideology and set of operating principles that can be loosely franchised in other countries without requiring direct command and control, and via these franchises incite attacks against countries allied with the U.S. until they withdraw from the conflict, as happened with the 2004 Madrid bombings, but which did not have the same effect with the July 7, 2005 London bombings.  Check.  See list of attacks since July 2005 below.  What I find truly astonishing is the absence of AQ activity in Iraq  prior to Shock and Awe (and the numerous operations it gave birth to) and how progressively prolific AQ attacks inside Iraq became afterwards.

  5. The U.S. economy will finally collapse under the strain of multiple engagements in numerous places, Check ....making the worldwide economic system which is dependent on the U.S. also collapse leading to global political instability Check, ...which in turn leads to a global jihad led by Al-Qaeda and a Wahhabi Caliphate will then be installed across the world.

I honestly believe the only reason that last piece of unfinished business is a goal they will never seet is because it is obviously the delusional rant of a raving lunatic.  The rest of it, not so much, since most of those objectives come to pass, at least to some degree.  Somewhere between the "with-us-or-against-us" lines in the sand, the cultural wars that preoccupy us from day to day, and the ever widening and worsening divisions we cultivate, nurture, preserve and endure, I think we dropped the ball..all of us.  Even the recent demise of OBL and AQ key leaders, though cause to celebrate, is of little comfort when one pauses to reflect on how many imagined and real fanatics the lunatic inspired and left behind him to carry out his bidding.

And what are we doing?  Slamming the president, jamming insults in each other's faces and turning a blind eye toward any real approach to fixing what ails us.

that would take away from the available time to insult and demean President Obama.

I remember 9/11 and how everyone worked together, and the people in this country were truly together and working as one.

Not patriotic much, eh?

You watched to see if anyone else would do - what you did not?

This reminds me of when I was a child and my dad would say that he watched the same cup sit (wherever in the house) for umpty ump days and nobody picked it up. He would be so angry. I always wondered (and still do, by the way) why he didn't just pick the darn cup up, if it bothered him so much. If you were so upset that nobody posted about 9/11, why didn't you?

Geez, you sure missed the point of her post. - NM

forgot about the anniversary of 9/11. Perhaps, most of us just didn't really feel that posting about it on the politics wall at MT Stars was really necessary. I like the OP's post and I think that her grandson is a sweetheart, but dislike that someone takes this as an opportunity to admonish everyone else for not posting about 9/11 when she, herself, did not either.
I get what you're saying - JS

However, I agree that you might be missing the point just a little bit.

There was a post regarding 9/11 on the Main Board (I think... if not the Gab Board) to remember those who were tragically lost on that day. Very appropriate. However, the response above on this thread that goes past the sadness and loss of so many on that day and gets to the cold hard facts behind 9/11 would not belong anywhere else but the Politics Board. I think waiting to post this at an appropriate time and in the appropriate place was actually quite respectful (keeping politics out of a place where people are greiving and respectfully remembering), and there's nothing wrong with that poster wondering why this conversation didn't take place sooner in the correct setting. That's the way I feel about it at least.
Thank you again, all of you mind readers, - for telling whether or not I got the

I got the point of the snarky post, but I still feel that if the poster was so upset that nobody posted, she could have done so. I understand what she is saying, whether or not I agree with it, but I dislike the chastising tone at the beginning about how nobody posted until the OP. The point I was making is that she was right. NOBODY posted, including her, which makes it a little hypocritical to be saying anything negative about the point that nobody else posted.
Bingo. 9/11 was a political event. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
On Sunday, I was preoccupied with POLITICALLY motivated acts of violence, war, massacres, genocides, coupes, terror and the prominent role extreme partisanship plays in it all. In my own lifetime, I have witnessed more of those events than I can count. Some affected me, my family and friends, and my country more than others, but all of them were internalized as undeniable evidence that politics MATTERS, especially in terms one's personal sense of security and well being, and that partisanship holds the potential to inflict immeasurable human pain, suffering, misery, death and destruction. Common threads that run through all such events is a perception of/or lust for domination, loss or denial of freedoms, ownership of resources and, above all, REVENGE, oftentimes with consequences that are visited upon generations yet to be born.

An off-the-cuff recollection would include assssinations and attempts on political leaders and activists, both here and abroad: JFK, Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, MLK, RFK, Frank Hampton, George Wallace (who evolved from racist to redemption shortly thereafter), Gerald Ford, Vernon Jordan, John Lennon, Anwar Sadat, Ronald Reagan, Yikzak Rabin, Benizar Butto...unfortuntely, the short version of this list.

Military operations, both open and covert: Iran coup to unseat Mossadegh. Though I was a pre-schooler at the time, this would ultimately resurface later in my life, through its long-lasting effects on the lives of some of my closest friends in college (as did repeated interference in Lebanon), my son, his dad, and my current husband of 23 years. Viet Nam, Cuba, Laos, Cambodia, the Dominican Republic, the Congo, Israel (always and forever), Palestine, Palestine, Palestine (did I mention Palestine?), Cyprus, Korea, Nicaragua, Zaire, Iran (again), El Salvador, Libya, Sinai, Egypt, Grenada, Hondurus, Chad, the Persian Gulf, Haiti, Bolivia, Gulf War, Panama, Columbia, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Sierra Leone, Bosnia, Kuwait, Somolia, Macedonia, Liberia, CAR, Kenya, Tanzania, Afghanistan, Sudan, East Timor, Serbia, Yemen, Iraq (agin), Georgia, Djibouti, Pakistan, and South Ossetia. Coming up for breath here.

I could cite a few dozen genocides, massacres, coupes and fallen nations, but I think the point has been made.

9/11, of course, was internalized much, much differently by all of us. I just felt it was appropriate to take a peek of the POLITICS that brought us to that point, and what has occurred in the interim, so I started with the usual basic questions of who, what, when, where and why, and got hung up on the who, thinking about how such events occur across generations, and how very deeply a single event can affect nations or groups of people and change the course of their history forever. Then I focused on the why and wrote the checklist post as a sobering retrospective on the motivations for the attack, the various responses and developments since that time.

You were right to conclude that I felt the post would be better timed if it were placed as a RESPONSE, rather than a provocative initial entry. I was utterly amazed how long it took for that opportunity to present itself, especially in view of how much of our POLITICAL lives (and trillions of dollars) was consumed by this act over so many years, not to mention those who were alive that day and are no longer with us....known to some as "collateral damage."

If the content encountered on this forum is any indication, it seems to me the time for that type of AWARENESS has passed. I guess I just didn't notice. It was never very comfortable to confront with brutal honesty in the first place, but to see it supplanted by the more compelling priority of PARTISAN BICKERING that holds the devastating potentials as described above...I find deeply saddening and profoundly troubling.

Silly me. It never occured to me that "snark" and "who posted first" would be the focus and all the rest of it would be brushed off as so much insiginicant fluff. What was I thinking?
You can turn off the reverberator now... - x

No one is impressed by your "holier than thou" attitude.

I suppose you would say that Obama has military personnel in Libya for purely humanitarian reasons. The administration that lets "no crisis go to waste" would never do anything for "political reasons."

She makes a valid point by calling it what it is. There is no kind and gentle way to describe petty or trite, rude, juvenile, willfully ignorant, or any number of other useless displays of negative behaviors so frequently displayed on this forum. I prefer constructive criticism to encounters with all of the above any day of the week.

Feel free to call me out for calling you out for her calling everybody else out.
