Is anyone actually going to the movie theater any more

Posted: Jun 29, 2014

Not just the cost but I hate to think of the germs in the seats.  Haven't been to a movie theater in years.

;

better said, is anyone PAYING for movies anymore??? - x

If I can't see it on Netflix or get a free rental at Redbox I don't want to watch it.

Movies - My 2 cents

[ In Reply To ..]
Germs on the seats would have been the last thing I would have thought about; the same would apply to restaurants, doctor's offices, department store dressing rooms and grocery stores to mention only a few. We can't stay locked inside our houses. We have a really nice multiplex where I live and they also have VIP seating where people can order food and have it served to them while they watch the movie, they even serve beer and wine. I go to the movies sometimes but like most I had Netflix and now Amazon Prime. Going to the movies is pricey but it's also fun to splurge and have an evening out now and then instead of waiting for the DVD. The selection at our local Redbox kiosks is bad and if you don't get your movies back in a timely manner, they continue to charge you. The last time I used Redbox something was wrong with it and I didn't get my movies, so nothing is perfect.

Sigh. Hasnt been the same since - The Sound of Music

I was going to say ... it is ridiculously expensive, not to mention that theaters are so filthy now ... the sound is too loud ... and nobody dresses up!!! Bah!

Ask the management to turn it down - My 2 cents

[ In Reply To ..]
If it is too loud, all you need to do is go out front and tell someone at the desk, they will turn it down. I would think that not dressing up would be a good thing, it's much more comfy in jeans or casual clothes. I've been going to movie theaters since I was a kid in the 60's and I never remember seeing anyone dressed up. It's dark in there anyway! I don't know where you live, but our theaters are not filthy, the staff comes in and cleans, pick up trash, etc., between showings.

One time my BF and I were watching the movie - "Parenthood", and it was so - sm

loud I was sitting there with my fingers in my ears. It was bothering others, as well, and so my BF went and asked the manager if the sound decibel level could be lowered a couple notches.

So what happens next? NO SOUND AT ALL! They turned it completely OFF for the next 10-15 minutes! So BF goes back and says the sound is now off completely. What did we get then? Back to the same original too-loud level. We walked out.

Am planning 2 movies really soon - for my grandfriends coming soon

They are spending about 2 months with me and I want to take them to see some GP rated movies including the Angeline Jolie film - Malificient (?) and also the show that is sorta an ET but I forget the name right now. I would take them to early shows but too many waterparks here at the parks so probably will be the afternoon/nite shows. I love the popcorn, might take our own candy, don't drink Cokes so will take us some water.

Rarely we do, but always at a discount--sm - anon

My mother uses some club or something to get tickets cheaper, around $5-$7 I think. I went for the first time in ages and loved the stadium seating. Some movies are worth seeing on the big screen (like Captain America). We also did not buy any concessions when we went. Most of the time it is Redbox for us.

worst for me is... - justme5

I would love to go the movies again, but refuse to pay anything to watch people continually mess with their cell phones. Idiots.

Have Not Gone - In Ages

[ In Reply To ..]
Have not gone since one could get movies on video--gee, 80's, 90's? Just a little patience, and it was out on video. These days, it's out faster than you can shake a stick at. I'll save the money, thank you, and make my own popcorn.

I go a couple times a year, and kids probably go - sm - XXX

about six times a year. We are lucky to be rural and have two theaters relatively close by, 30 and 45 mins respectively. The 30 minute theater is half the price at $5.50 for matinee and $7.50 for regular times. So not too bad in terms of cost. My next planned visit is in November when Mockingjay comes out. As for germs, I have never gotten sick from going to the movies.

We have a theater with $6.00 Tuesdays! - NYMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I hate paying full price for movies, but on Tuesdays our new theater charges a flat $6.00, and a large popcorn is only $5.00. Two of us can go to the movie and share a popcorn and drink for less than $20.00. I've seen more movies since this theater opened up than I have in the last five years put together!

I stopped when I broke up with my boyfriend. - (LOL - no one to go with!) -sm

But it's gotten too expensive for me, as well. Worst of all, over the years the theaters got smaller and smaller, so fewer good seats to choose from, and they kept cranking the sound up louder and louder. I'm sorry, but when you can feel the sound in your SPLEEN, then it's too darned loud! When you have to put in earplugs to attend the movies, it's too darned loud!

I also got tired of being charged for parking, on top of the movie, and having to sneak your own snacks in because the movie snacks were priced ridiculously. Add to that screaming babies, inconsiderate people, crazy people using it as a place to get them off the streets, chronic coughers, and tall, big-headed or big-haired people sitting right in front of you, and going to the movies just wasn't my idea of a big night out, anymore.

should see someone for that germ phobia - I go all the time

[ In Reply To ..]
We have a dollar movie theater where older movies go about the time they are being released on DVD, but people want to still see them in the theater. It costs $1.50 for a regular movie and $3.50 for a 3D movie. You can buy their refillable popcorn bucket at the beginning of the year, then get $3 refills on return trips. Maybe it's where I live, but there are no nasty theaters anywhere near here.

That reminds me of the dirty benches in the mall - SM

They are painted white, so you can really see the filth on them. I see young people constantly laying on them with dirt shoes where people sit with clean clothing. I'm like you . . turns me off.

Not to mention the potential bed bugs you can - pick up in a theater NM

I go nearly every Monday morning for $6.00 - L&L

[ In Reply To ..]
My work week ends at 5am Monday, so it is my Friday night out. I enjoy the big screen and Dolby sound. I gave up sweets but used to have a loyalty cup for $1.50 of enormous soda.

You NEED exposure to germs to build up your immunities. I only worry about exposure to Ebola.

Philly Theater Company To Stage Musical ComedyJul 08, 2017
Normally, when we get a press release from a local theater company about its latest work, the press release includes, you know, the name of the play. But Philly theater company Lightning Rod Special bucked that trend this week went they sent us a notice announcing its musical comedy about abortion, which debuts in August at the Painted Bride. “We were going with ‘Fetus Chorus,’” explains co-creator Alice Yorke, pictured below. “But there were a lot of mixed feelings about it. Rush: The MovieMar 06, 2012
This is a transcript of the video someone pieced together of Limbaugh’s diatribe, linked below.  For those trying to float the argument in defense of Lush by bemoaning misogynist libs in the media and demanding they “own up,” I offer the following observation, but first let me state categorically that misogyny in the media in any form, regardless of who said what, where, when and why, is unacceptable.  As for why some is tolerated as “free speech”  an ...

Does Your Child Go To Any Movie You Do?Nov 08, 2009
I went to the movies today, a new one that just came out about an overweight teenager from Harlem who was sexually abused by her father and mentally and physically abused by her mother. This movie was rated an R. Several years back it would have not had that lax of a rating. No prude here but the movie was completely filled with the most vile language I have heard in a movie but on top of that simulated rape scenes of the young teen with the father being the perpetrator. I saw many, many familie ...

Kids! You start on a vacation and no more than 10 miles and they are asking when are we going to be there? I would like some ideas for my friends, nothing sexy, no bad language. Dean Koontz/Odd Thomas MovieJan 16, 2013
Spinoff of a thread in Politics. Does anyone read Dean Koontz? I *loved* him in the 80s, and even though he's become kind of formulaic, I still have a soft spot for him. I especially love the Odd Thomas series and I'm stoked about the upcoming movie. The casting is kind of (forgive me) odd, (Patton Oswalt as Big Ozzie? mmmkay) but I'm still shamelessly looking forward to it. I'd love to have seen James McAvoy as Odd, but I guess he's too old. ...

I Just Watched The Worst Movie In My Entire LifeJan 06, 2010
I am so mad that I actually bought this movie because I heard so many people say how scary it it.  It was not scary at all...not one iota.  The movie is called "Paranormal Activity".  After watching it I got online and see it has won the Rotten Tomato award as did the actress and actor in it (if you could call them that).  It was slow, boring, and the acting was horrible.  Not the reactions one would expect if you have a demon in the house.  Her screaming was so hid ...
