Does your child go to any movie you do?

Posted: Nov 8, 2009

I went to the movies today, a new one that just came out about an overweight teenager from Harlem who was sexually abused by her father and mentally and physically abused by her mother. This movie was rated an R. Several years back it would have not had that lax of a rating. No prude here but the movie was completely filled with the most vile language I have heard in a movie but on top of that simulated rape scenes of the young teen with the father being the perpetrator. I saw many, many families coming in with small children. A mother sat down close to me and had her child who was approximately 6 or maybe younger sitting right next to me. When the previews were on the child asked the mother about going to see a show and the mother replied that was for adults. I looked her way, did not say anything and she said "Yes, I know this one is also but do you know things like this are on Nickelodeon all the time." I said nothing in return. The child sitting next to me in the show starting crying at 1 point when the main character and her child fell down some steps and asking about other things that were being said. Is this how children are being brought up now? I find it pathetic to even think about taking a very young child to this. What are your thoughts on this?

I call this child abuse/neglect, and I wish that "mom"....sm - Cyndiee

Could have had the Child Protective Services called on her that moment, not that taking a child from its mother that easily should be done, way too traumatic for the little one, but to have her taken in, put in a room with child welfare officials, law enforcement, etc., and explain to the dim-witted mother that allowing an INNOCENT child to be ASSAULTED (yes, it is an abusive asault on their wellbeing, intellect, development, emotional growth, etc.) in that type of movie is gross neglicence and abusive, explain to her HOW, because she is obviously too stupid or uncaring to GET IT, and then tell her to wise up or she WILL lose her child, just as if she had physically struck her or neglected her. Yes, mainstream TV DOES deal with some controversial subjects on TV, but 1) You can choose to turn of the darned thing, or hopefully find better, more appropriate entertainment, or 2) watch whateve you want when the children are not around. I know the movie of which you speak, and it is a raw, searing, painful portrayal, it does have a good message and also addresses ADULT themes to ponder, NO WAY that little child should have been there, and by "Mommy" bringing her there I think it implicitely says to the child "honey, just get used to rape, abuse, f-bombs going off every 2 seconds, disrespectfulness, hatred, etc., because those things exist in the world." We are trying to socially HEAL AND CURE these problems as a community/society, not expose innocent children before they can comprehend, and SHOULD NOT comprehend at a tender age. It is one thing to be open, honest, and age-appropriate when you children encounter the ills of the world, another to WILLINGFULLY expose that child, and it is abusive because I doubt that poor child could have taken the car keys and met mom back at home......although I wish that were an option!! This is horrible!!!!

Just talked with the manager at the theater - Lynn

She agreed with me, stating she could not believe people walking in with their children and saying she tells them if she is where the tickets being sold and/or taken up but she has no choice when it is rated like it is and the child brought in anyway. You are right, totally agree child abuse. I might call family and children services tomorrow and ask- here in this town I doubt it will make any difference at all though.

And that is a shame, Lynn, like they say, it takes a village....sm - Cyndiee

But many parents act like the "Village Idiots", and many of them have MBAs and PhDs and BAs, I call it "BS." And then everyone stands with their mouths agape when they hear of the gang rapes in high schools, children killing and/or molesting other children, rampant teenage pregnancies.....as long as THE GROWNUPS continue to minimize how much violence, hatred, indignity, sexual innuendo and promiscuity, vile language, etc., hurts our childs' minds just like a poison, it will not matter what else you do, the outside influence gets in there like a bacteria and festers and pollutes their beautiful, innocent souls. NO baby comes into this world BAD, I am convinced, it is a confluence of many factors, but this DITZ (and I would like to use a stronger word here), of a mother does not deserve to be a mother, what else, let the kids have access to the liquor cabinet because "they will get exposed later?" Lets' just go from toy guns to the real thing, right? I am just so angry because I have been a mom of 3 for over 20 years now, all different ages, and I have been outraged at some of the music, movies, video games, toys, and other things that MY CHILD, after I have painstakingly tried to do all the right, moral, healthy, uplifting things for, have ruined it when my child comes home spewing some of the stuff they have encountered at other's family's households, and I am blessed to live in a very "upscale" town, but that does not matter, SMUT is the great equalizer, ....and I am just too angry and sad to go on, I shut up now (applause, applause!). Love your children and keep them sweet for as long as you can!
MBAs, PhDs and BAs Oh my - MeMT

I would never expose my children to something like that and can't believe that people do. My son has a "friend" he knew in second grade, the youngest of 3 boys...the mother was in law school... the boy came to school daily telling the other boys, includin my 7 year old son, about sex and how his brothers would let him look at b**bs on the internet, and all about playing Grand Theft Auto. I went to school for a conference and the teacher told me that I was trying to keep my child a baby and that the boys mother was just a normal mom trying to get thru law school and to give her a break.... I went to the principal. Later my son and this boy were not in school together, but now in 7th grade they are once again in school together and have classes together. This child is once again being an influence on my son. My son is now having behavior problems in school which he has never had, his grades are down, and I am almost sure this boy has something to do with it. But hey, his parents are both attorneys, plenty of money, so give them a break, right?

I just found out that my ex took our 9yo daughter to see - LoriMT

Saw VI over the weekend when he had her. I was livid! I called him immediately and chewed him out, but he just said "oh it was just blood and guts, no sex or nudity." I was livid! I have a strict no R rated movie policy with my 9yo because she is, big shocker here, ONLY 9!!! My ex cannot seem to grasp that concept! I also have to know exactly what happens in a PG-13 movie before I let her see those as well. My ex acts like I have a vendetta against him. He just doesn't get it.

Then I have a cousin who will not let her children watch violent, horror movies because of the violence and gore, but has a naked picture of herself, framed and mounted on her bedroom wall that her children have seen, but that's okay because it's "art." And she let's them watch adult comedies like Wedding Crashers, Hangover, etc. because it's for fun.

We live in a desensitized world and I just hate it!

This movie is too much for small children, really - Lynn

The language alone should have parents, if they brought children, getting up and leaving, much less the simulated rape scenes, mother and daughter fighting each other, just the most vulgar and vile language of any film I have ever seen. Like I said, absolutely no prude but I think parents should think better than to subject small children to this. The child next to me was crying during 1 part, another part when the girl supposedly giving birth and screaming in pain asking her mother what was the matter with the girl. OMG!

The Wedding Crashers. For any who have seen it, it has scene after scene of breasts and a lot of foul language and adult content. Next to my husband and I sat a woman with a small child. As we were leaving, my husband said he was peed off (the real word, of course) about something and that mother jumped on him about having used that word in front of her child. Ironic, huh?

I don't remember the last time I saw an R rated movie. I'm not a prude by any means, but I think the movies that are out today are horrible. I hate any kind of gore or over-the-top violence just for the sake of having it in the movie. I read some group wanted any movie with cigarette smoking to have an automatic R rating? FOR CIGARETTE SMOKING?! Really? I think PG-13 movies today are what were considered R when I was in high school and the R movies now are just way out there and over the top.

Have good friend who won't see anything except Disney. She isn't - a prude either. sm

Some people feel their sensibilities are attacked watching a movie with conflict and all really good movies have conflict.

Was it a good movie for adults? It seems very intense. - Sally

Supposedly it had a good message? Oprah said something to the effect of taking your breath away. She must have meant all that language. Well, the teenage father is the father of his own grandchildren, one that is called Mongo because the child is mongoloid- my hand went over my mouth when I heard the name of that child! The teenager gets somewhat of an education from being originally unable to even read. The teenager winds up with 2 children to support on her own and something else worse but will not spill the beans on what. To me not uplifting message at all and I have seen better messages going out. It is definitely not a live happy ever after movie.

This is a transcript of the video someone pieced together of Limbaugh’s diatribe, linked below.  For those trying to float the argument in defense of Lush by bemoaning misogynist libs in the media and demanding they “own up,” I offer the following observation, but first let me state categorically that misogyny in the media in any form, regardless of who said what, where, when and why, is unacceptable.  As for why some is tolerated as “free speech”  an ...

Dean Koontz/Odd Thomas MovieJan 16, 2013
Spinoff of a thread in Politics. Does anyone read Dean Koontz? I *loved* him in the 80s, and even though he's become kind of formulaic, I still have a soft spot for him. I especially love the Odd Thomas series and I'm stoked about the upcoming movie. The casting is kind of (forgive me) odd, (Patton Oswalt as Big Ozzie? mmmkay) but I'm still shamelessly looking forward to it. I'd love to have seen James McAvoy as Odd, but I guess he's too old. ...

I Just Watched The Worst Movie In My Entire LifeJan 06, 2010
I am so mad that I actually bought this movie because I heard so many people say how scary it it.  It was not scary at all...not one iota.  The movie is called "Paranormal Activity".  After watching it I got online and see it has won the Rotten Tomato award as did the actress and actor in it (if you could call them that).  It was slow, boring, and the acting was horrible.  Not the reactions one would expect if you have a demon in the house.  Her screaming was so hid ...
