Huge Cleaning Mess!

Posted: Sep 23, 2014

Hi all, I am hoping someone can help me, someone who has experience in this. I have very shiny white tile floors, I guess they're porcelain. I wanted to clean my kitchen grout, so I used a very highly-recommended grout cleaner on the grout, then went over the entire floor with a mild detergent with my wet/dry vac. When it was all dried, I noticed a horrible film, almost like a million little water spots over the entire floor. Some are actually swirls. I troubleshooted this over the phone with a co-worker of my husband's who is very good with tile, and she said that it sounds like the original sealant has kind of spread out, and she recommended trying vinegar, which did not help. She said if that doesn't help, try acid---I'm assuming she means muriatic acid. But I don't want to do muriatic acid. First, I have a pet parrot, and the fumes would probably kill him. Second, it sounds risky--I'd have to wear gloves and a mask, and I'd be on the floor for a long period of time. She didn't see this first hand, so I'm not even sure this is the correct/only advice. I have no clue as to what type of sealant was originally used. I have tried the vinegar, baking soda, vinegar and baking soda mixed together, ammonia-based window cleaner, rubbing alcohol, plain old Dawn dish detergent, and a couple of other things. I even tried a little bit of acetone (nail polish remover) in an inconspicuous spot, and even that didn't get it off, though it did smear it some, which means a little something happened. Anyone have any ideas on what I can do next? I just ordered beautiful new granite countertops, and now I have this horrible-looking floor. It's basically ruined. I cannot afford to have it replaced at this time, and anyway, I don't even know if they still make this tile. Even if I went with a different tile in the kitchen, it wouldn't be good--I have an open floor plan, so all the tile is the same in the kitchen, dining room and living room, and any change in that would not look good. I can't afford it anyway, even if there was a way to make it look okay with different tile. I've tried the Internet, but you know how that goes. I did try mild scrubbing with a nylon pad.;

I would call a tile store to ask them the questions. - Don't risk anything.

And be careful with whatever you do.

Thank you - And to LH who e-mailed me

I appreciate the responses.

To LH who e-mailed me--we think when they originally sealed the grout, they may have just sealed the whole floor instead of just the grout and some sealant is still stuck on there.

I am still open to suggestions and would try it on an inconspicuous spot, but will probably end up calling a tile store.

Aquamix tile sealer remover heavy duty? That is supposed to work. Supposedly the only other way would be to use a razor blade keeping the blade flat against the tile surface, or some people have had some success with Magic Eraser. Did you pay someone to put the tile in? If you did and they used the sealer on everything, wouldn't they be responsible for replacing all of it because they were only supposed to seal the grout?

Thanks All - OP

I like all the ideas! I will try them.

I had read on the Internet about Aquamix. I'm thinking of going to our local tile store and asking them for a product.

The tile was here when we moved in 12 years ago, so that's why I can't go back to who originally put it in, so I could at least find out what kind of sealant I'm dealing with.

It's a pretty big area, but maybe a few area rugs around is a good idea---I hadn't thought of that one!

It Think It Is Fixed! - OP

Hi all,

Thanks so much for the responses. I may have solved the problem!

Someone we know (who is a cleaning fanatic) recommended Tub O' Towels. They are individual all-purpose wipes. It was tedious and time-consuming, but it looks like they worked!

My only concern is that since there is lanolin and other types of "oils" in it, like aloe, it may just be covering the spots. I guess I'll find out next time I clean the floor my usual way.

I guess we'll see!

False Alarm - From OP

False alarm on the "fix." Turns out, it was just covering up the problem. Back to the drawing board, though I did try some soft-scrub type of stuff, and that worked. Just seems tedious.

Thanks all!

I just want to s-c-r-e-a-m!!!  I'm screaming here so I don't here at home. My little girl has way too much stuff. It starts in the summer when she has her birthday and keep building until Christmas when her room is about to explode.  Her toy box is overflowing.  Her hutch/drawers for art work is so full the drawers won't close. She can't walk inside her walk-in closet unless she walks on top of 6 inches of stuff.  So much of it is stuff she won't/can ...

Self-cleaning OvenNov 29, 2010
Well, made a huge Thanksgiving dinner (and I  have to admit the oven hadn't been cleaned in a few weeks before that) and cleaned the oven today.  Didn't realize how bad it was until the smoke started filling the kitchen and living room.  I am surprised smoke detectors didn't go off before I got windows open. I think I should still be using Easy-Off.  At least then I did it on a more regular basis.  The smoke has quit, but whole house still smells smokey. ...

I have gone through messages, deleted a few.  If people are talking about the issues I do not want to delete those posts.  I will try to address what I read below: Calling posters bully's.  I read the messages they were referencing and there was no bullying.  A poster is voicing their difference of opinion.  That is not biullying.  People are calling people names and when the name is called back to them they are claiming bulllying, lying, etc. Having a differ ...

Babysitting/cleaning - OMGSep 24, 2015
In a post below, I asked if it would be appropriate to clean someone's home while babysitting their 4 children. I must say - it was IMPOSSIBLE.  The children are ages 2, 4, 6 and 8.  I had trouble just keeping up with the messes they were making while I was there, let alone try and get anything else done. I told their mom the first night - "I give you credit, I dont know how you do it with all of these kids".  ...

Does Anyone Else Have A Difficult Time Keeping Up With Cleaning And Other Household Chores While WorJan 10, 2015
I find that when I'm working at home, my time is spent mostly trying to get my lines in, and I don't have a whole lot of time left, and I get behind on my cleaning and other household chores.  My days off are often spent trying to catch up.  I have three children (10 and twins 7).  The oldest one tries to help a lot, but the other two not so much.  I have to find a way to get them more involved in helping.  I also have a sick husband who is at the point where h ...

In A Mess Because Of Money And RelativesMay 07, 2012
I have a brother who is wealthy and has always been very generous to me. I am in the process of selling my house, and things are taking longer than expected. Plenty Of Blame To Go ALL AROUND For Our Current Mess.Mar 08, 2010
This "blame game" thing is positively juvenile. You can trace our debt problems all the way back to Wilson, people, and maybe even earlier than that. There's only one question in the current political season: Is the current administration making things worse or better? ANSWER: Worse. Much, much worse. So, we have to continue to vote the ba$tards out of office until we hopefully luck on an administration that has some guts. There's no other way out of this mess. Accor ...

The Power To Say NO Is Huge.Nov 01, 2010
As few as 41 senators, which could represent as little as 12.3% of the U.S. population, can make a filibuster happen.  The Republicans have been using the filibuster continually, even filibustering bills they previously were FOR, just because they believe it makes Dems look bad.  The Republicans currently have 41 senators and block everything.  The Democrats have 57 senators, so by the rules they cannot override the Republican obstructionism.   ...

MOVE YOUR MONEY DAY! Do Yourself A HugeNov 05, 2011
I've been talking about it, and today I did it.  I took my money out of the big national bank I'd been with for over 20 years, Greed-of-America. The bank that had hidden fees up the wazoo.  The bank that charged me overdraft fees, even when I never overdrew my account. The bank that continually raised its minimum balance to a point where I was getting more money siphoned out of my account, even though I couldn't afford to put any more in, which is why I fell below the mi ...

There are many other liberal inconsistencies - for instance, regarding human life and abortion - that they cannot explain away, but these two are parti ...
