My neighbor's yard is a mess!!

Posted: Nov 10, 2009

We live sort of in the country on a cul-de-sac gravel road.  All of the houses are less than 5 years old and sit on 1-1/2 to 3 acre lots.  It is beautfil in here with all the big hardwood trees and nice big yards.  Everyone keeps their yards mowed and clean EXCEPT of course the one next door to me.  Our lot is 1-1/2 acres and his is 3 acres.  He mows a strip down where our property lines meet and on the other side of his yard where the property line meets the other neighbor.  Only sometimes does he mow the front yard, once a month, and hardly ever the backyard.  He has nice hardwood trees in the front but he has NEVER mowed around them, just right up to them and then leaves the weeds about 10 feet out around all the trees.  He said he "hates yardwork."  Don't know why he built on that lot if he does not want to mow.  All of the neighbors (8) talk about them terribly because of their yard.  He has a few crazy things lying around in the back yard like wooden steps out in the middle of the yard that go nowhere, what he calls a "shed," and for some reason there is a a door propped up against a boat.  Been there for months.

The thing is, they are very very very nice people.  Their kids are sweet and polite.  They are active in the church.  They always speak like they are your best friend.  I feel terrible about the way the neighbors talk about them and they don't know it.  I want to say something but I am afraid I will make them angry or hurt their feelings.  Actually it is no one's business how ugly their yard is I guess, but with very little effort their yard could be beautiful.  Should I say something in casual conversation?  What?

taxes or want to come mow and do the upkeep yourself, MYOB. It's theirs; they bought it and pay the taxes. Unless it is a health hazard (junk cars, etc) or there's a county ordinance prohibiting what they have going on, it's really no one else's beeswax.

How are junk cars a health hazard?

Leaking radiator fluid, for one thing. Extremely - poisonous stuff, especially to animals.

You said they are very nice people. Leave them alone. I have two of the biggest OCD's beside me and I would trade "nice people" for these nuts anytime! They may surprise you later, maybe they have other issues. Not for you to judge, sorry, keep your mouth shut and count your blessings.

Are there pre-teens or teens that live there? If so, have them go over and offer to do yard work and clean up for a few bucks. I have never mowed a lawn in my life and don't ever want to. I have my little brother come over to mow the lawn for $10 once a week. I will sometimes give him a little extra to trim the rose bushes or do other little projects. I also intend to have him come rake the leaves for me. It works out great for me, and he gets to have some spending money.

I would say very clearly NOYB - No sweat off my back

This is something I would not approach with a 10 foot pole. If others talk, oh well, if you donĂ¢€™t like how it looks, donĂ¢€™t look. It is not your business how another person's yard looks and I certainly would not offer people to clean up. I would find that insulting.

Some people like their yards that way, however my neighbor - does not have curtains and

walks around inside in his towel like he just got out of the shower. Can't help but see as our windows face each other and I'm sitting in front of the window working. But I'm not about to offer to buy him curtains. LOL I just try not to look up when I see movement now.

I agree with you though...this is not something anyone should touch with a 10-foot pole. The reason is my step-dad is one of those people. Used to drive my mom nuts. I went over one time and offered to help clean up the debris and mow the lawn. He simply said to me (in a nice way so as not to hurt my feelings), this is my yard and this is the way I like it and it's nobody's business how I keep my yard. I said I was sorry and just thought maybe he hadn't gotten around to clearing up the stuff. He said he likes it that way. He also said, how would you like it if I came to your place and asked you the same thing if you had something out that I didn't think should be out. I felt like I had insulted him, but he didn't take offense. I learned my lesson the hard way.

Don't say anything - it will cause trouble - just me

It will send the signal that you think they are pigs and will start a long neighbor battle and whatever type of relationship you have with them now will be changed for ever. When you think about it, is there really a nice way to tell someone you think their yard is a mess. I can't think of one.

Like the poster said...some people like their yards that way and it doesn't phase them. What's that saying... "what's one persons garbage is another persons treasure".

If it really bothers you maybe build up a barrier or something so you don't see it (if that's possible). We built an extra addition on top of our fence so that it would block the view we have of certain neighbors. It's portable so we can take it down if we want but at least now we don't see our messy neighbors yard.

But I do know what you mean...I moved from a neighborhood where everyone had junk in their yards, it was a downer to drive through it all the time.

Several years ago I owned some property in another state, 6 acres in all with most of that mowing. We tried to go up every 3 weeks to mow in the summer. One time supposedly I had someone to cut the yard instead of us, left from the property and then a couple of weeks later got call from the health department regarding the property. My next door neighbor who tried unsuccessfully to buy the property from me had called them. I went back up there, the grass there was less than knee high, no vehicles, no junk, no nothing. The yard was cut, I called the health department in that state on Monday and told them never to bother me again for something that definitely was not a health hazard. I never had another call after then. This was lake front in the county. Sometime people should just mind their own because other people do not like being told what they should do. Up and until health hazard, would keep my mouth closed.

Sadly, not much can be done about it. People are the way they are. Some just do not care. It is really a shame though, especially when you have a very nice yard, flower garden, and trimmed shrubs and then your trashy neighbor ruins your look no matter how hard you try. All anyone can see is their mess.

As some listed here, there are subtle hints. Keep your yard extremely neat near their property line. Try to put up a temporary or permanent barrier. That usually gets people's attention and maybe they will take the hint. If they do not want to clean up their mess, maybe they will make a better effort at hiding it themselves.

a metro area and one of his neighbors called the city on him and he was given so many days to clean it up or face a fine. He had a junked/wrecked truck in the drive for over a year and the back looked like a junk yard.

Should I Let My Husband Out Of Yard Work Or Not? Nov 16, 2009
My husband is younger than me, 56 now and he is balking about the trees leading into our property. We have 3 Crepe Myrtles that bloom so pretty each spring/summer but taking care of them is something else, he says. Each fall he wants to prune them back. If you just let them go they could get massive and also he cleans them up around the bottom. I also have another tree, maybe an Ash, that has like peeling bark on it and it is very unusual and he wants that to go as well, says too many leaves com ...

Vegtable Garden In The Front Yard?May 22, 2012
I am of the school that you plant flowers and shrubs and bushes in the front yard for good curb appeal.  You make your house look very appealing and pretty, but we have newer neighbors next to us that have decided to plant a vegtable garden out front.  They are growing carrots and onions and such in front of the house, while the rest of the block looks pretty, my mid summer, this yard next to ours is going to look like a weedy jungle.  They bought a townhouse, not a farm house.&nb ...

Neighbor's Barking DogSep 21, 2011
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle a neighbor's barking dog?  This is a hound dog who barks incessantly all day long at the house kitty corner to ours.  I've left a note at the residence about this and have called animal control when it continued, and he is still at it.  I've tried closing up my house and running white noise in my office, but nothing seems to drown him out.  It seems talking to them would be pointless at this juncture as they hav ...

Vent About My NeighborSep 23, 2010
Okay, so I have a neighbor who is unemployed.  I know this cos he and his other half are always having screaming shouting matches and she yells he doesn't work and doesn't contribute, doesn't drive, eats her food, smokes, won't even watch "her kid", blah, blah, blah. So..what does he do?  He goes and gets himself a motorcycle.  So he has no license to drive it and it sits there in the yard (not their parking area, but their back yard that faces our back yard) a ...

Problem With NeighborJun 21, 2014
I'm starting to have a problem with my neighbor. We live in a community of little cottages that are very close together. The decks of the individual cottages are actually joined, so there is really only a few feet between our back door and their back door. We are not supposed to smoke inside the unit, and when we moved in, the property manager said that eve ...

Advice About Neighbor Trying To Be HelpfulSep 20, 2016
I am looking for a way to let him know that I am very grateful for his help, but having that kind of noise around is distracting while I am working.  I have actually told him this before, but I am not sure he understood that I meant for all time.  To top it off, when he's mowing he makes my dogs bark, and of course that is worse than the mowing itself.  I usually try to mow before he has a chance to get to it, but with all the rain we've had it is hard to do.  I wor ...

How Do You Deal With A Neighbor That Has No Regard For AnyoneJul 16, 2011
How would you deal with a neighbor in a townhouse semidetached type neighborhood who has no regard for anyone at all and they just take over everything.  They burn a firepit every night with skids which they shouldnt be and smoke goes in everyones house and ashes all over the cars.  They used to have their dog out in other yards and the kids just everywhere doing whatever.  They live like they own everything around them.  We did put up a fence and that helped some of this but ...
