Holiday tipping question

Posted: Nov 21, 2012

Here's my question - The owner of the salon where I get my hair cut and colored is the one who does my hair 95% of the time.  Her prices are very reasonable for the area where I live, about half the cost of other places around.  I've always tipped in the past, which she often refuses or gives me free product in return, and yes, I know you're not technically supposed to tip the owner of the salon, but I've always felt like you tip for good service.  I'm wondering what I should get her for the holidays or how much I should tip.  Normal tipping guidelines recommend the cost of one appointment, so should I go with that, or would something else be more appropriate?

Since she obviously feels she needs to give you something in return for your tips, maybe you should just get her a small fruit basket with a card inside or if she drinks coffee do like a small coffee gift set. If you want to basically give her a Christmas gift, then maybe it shouldn't be done with money that just looks like a tip.

A note....I did NOT know that tipping guidelines recommend the cost of one appointment???? So, if it is $40 bucks to get my hair cut I should pay $80??? I would definitely be broke. I do tip, but not nearly that much.

i think she meant... - tipping

tipping for holidays, not as a tipping rule in general ;)

She meant Holiday Cash - See Msg

True, the salon owners do not generally accept money tips for each appointment or for Christmas. I think you should skip the cash, since she was very clear on that, and for a holiday gift or any time of year to show appreciation, a small something would be nice. Something she can't get through her salon connections. Coffee idea is nice--make sure she likes coffee. If you know her personally, you can be more personal.

I have also seen cute little wall and desk plaques that address the importance of hair dressers. "Hair dressers make the world a more beautiful place..." Things like that.

Sometimes people take gifts the wrong way. - DollarTreeGirl

I wouldn't bother if I were you. She might think you are bribing her for something in the future. Maybe give her a few extra bucks as you leave the salon. Most of them charge way too much anyway. Never had a beautician yet that did my hair the way I liked it. So do it myself now with DollarTree products.

I never ask for a style - So, you do not have it cut?

[ In Reply To ..]
I seriously don't need anyone to style my hair. They just cut it. Do you not ever get haircuts?

Anyway, I have some weird waves in my hair, and I always, always give a hairdresser a few tries for the cut. You can't expect them to know your head right away, actually. Especially when it's wet. I finally asked one if she would cut it when it was dry so she could see the waves better, and that's what we do, and it's great.

Hair Cutting - DollarTreeGirl

Yeah, never cut my hair wet, always dry and have some really simple ways to cut my hair, much like using the "Creaclip" although not. Beauticians sometimes take an hour to cut someone's hair but you can get the same cut with some simple tricks in a few minutes.

What I Learned This Holiday About Next Holiday ...Dec 27, 2009
I learned I will not purchase any gifts from the "wish lists" of the youth in our family.  Yes, this includes my own kids. Only 1 out of the 4 had any surprises at all in their gifts.  Mind you, these 4 range in age from 9 to 24 years.  The 24yo was surprised.  The other 3 knew exactly what they were getting - recognized the boxes - made such statements about knowing all their gifts.  Not hateful, not ungrateful but expectant. The 2 youngest are my nephews.  Neith ...

TippingFeb 23, 2011
I splurged for my birthday and had my hair professionally colored on Friday.  I have natural dark brown hair with gray spatterings.  I wanted it a natural brown and decided on a shade lighter, hardly noticable. I have noticed that the roots look reddish since then and since I've never had my hair done I thought it was "normal" and it would tone down.  I finally called the salon back today and they told me to come in so they could see it.  They also noticed it was redder ...

government benefits. Obamacare has pushed us over the entitlements tipping point. In 2011 some 49.2 percent of U.S. households received benefits from one or more government programs—about 151 million out of an estimated 306.8 million Americans—according to U.S. Census Bureau data released last October. Currently, around 6 million to 7 million Americans who have signed up for Obamacare are receiving taxpayer-provided subsidies (though the administration’s numbers cannot be trusted, ...

Holiday Squabble May 13, 2013
I have two grown 30+ year old sons who have jealousy and rivalry issues.  One son invited me, their step-dad, his sister, and his grandmother to lunch for Mother's Day.  I accepted and asked if his brother was invited and he said no.  I thought maybe my other son would be at his in-laws, but he wasn't.  He got hurt.  I tried to make other plans with him in the afternoon, but he was hurt and rude.  I finally told the oldest son that I would have to cancel l ...

Holiday Gift GivingNov 08, 2011
ONE GREAT IDEA!!! Christmas & Chanukah 2011 -- Birth of a New TraditionAs the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. There is no longer an excuse that, at giftgiving time, nothing can be found that is produced by A ...

If You Are Opting Out Of Holiday Commercialism This YearOct 23, 2013
Since the holiday season is only about 2 months from now, I wanted to share this great idea that was just passed along to me from a friend. If you, or someone you know is bowing out of the commercialism and materialism of the holiday season by saying "no more stuff", you can register on the SoKind Registry so that the gift-giver instead can give "experiences" like various types of lessons (cooking, music, etc), national park passes, zoo memberships, classes to learn a new skill, hot balloon ride ...

Vent About My Hubby During This Wonderful Holiday Season ... (sm)Dec 23, 2010
Every year at Christmas my hubby is able to take two weeks off, which is wonderful for him but is beginning to stink for me.  By the time his vacation is over I will be extremely resentful towards him and I hate that.  In years past he has always done everything he can to help me out while I am working, cleaning the house, wrapping presents, picking up little odd and end gifts, etc.  However, this year all he has done is lay on the couch and sleep after sleeping until 11:00 every ...

Sarah Palin Questions Obama White House Holiday Card Dec 22, 2011
Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin (R) attacked the White House holiday card in an article on Fox News Radio. The front of the card shows the Obamas' dog, Bo, sitting in a very Christmas-like setting, with a fireplace decorated with wreaths and red ribbons, and a table with a poinsettia plant and presents. "From our family to yours, may your holidays shine with the light of the season," reads the inside of the card, which is signed by the Obamas (including Bo). Palin characterized ...

Cat Question Aug 05, 2011
Don't know if you remember my last posts awhile back about a stray cat we started feeding and took care, gave her shelter for the winter and she had kittens.  We've taken the kittens in and adore them all.  Now...here she is 3 or 4 months later, every once in awhile I'll get a glimpse of her nursing them.  Vet told us milk has to be dried up before they can fix her.  However, she is a stray and she has been going out walking around the neighborhood like she has ...

QuestionMar 22, 2010
Okay, here is a question that I have not seen come up here.  While watching news today this just crossed my mind.  If the government sets an insurance rate you have to pay based upon what you make per year, do they take into account all your other bills, and that sometimes as ICs we don't get any work coming in at times, and then what they set is more than what you can afford (i.e. more money than your paycheck and you still have to pay all your bills).  As ICs I'm sure ...
