I splurged for my birthday and had my hair professionally colored on Friday.  I have natural dark brown hair with gray spatterings.  I wanted it a natural brown and decided on a shade lighter, hardly noticable.

I have noticed that the roots look reddish since then and since I've never had my hair done I thought it was "normal" and it would tone down.  I finally called the salon back today and they told me to come in so they could see it.  They also noticed it was redder on top, and very obviously so and told me they would touch up the roots with brown. 

they did and it's all nice and even and pretty now.  BUT... The original cost of the color was $90 and I tipped the gal 15% ($13.50).  today I was charged for the touch up also, which kind of irked me, but whatever.  I also left another tip, but only 10%. 

My question is,  should I have even been charged?  I was operating under the impression that in the old days, if a salon made a mistake, they fixed it and I paid just a tip, wasn't charged another fee.  Have things changed that much?

have paid to have them fix their screwup. I would have made that clear right up front. Obviously I could be way off the mark here, but I really think in terms of customer service they should have waived the touch up fee, it is not like you were coming back weeks later to have your roots done because they were showing. I would call them back and register your dissatisfaction in how they handled your problem and see how they respond.

I've never been to a salon that didn't guarantee their work for at least 1 week, but usually 2 weeks, whether they truly screw something up or if it's a misunderstanding between stylist and client. They absolutely shouldn't have charged you for the touch-up. I've had it happen in the past where my color wasn't right and they did fix it for me free of charge and I did still tip the person who fixed it because as we all know time is money and the stylist still took the time to make it right.

I have had times that I have had a problem, not short enough, not enough highlights around the face, etc. and have always had them fix it for free and in fact, have never tipped the second time around either. This should be the policy in any salon no matter how high end or lower end it is.

As a matter of fact, 2 weeks ago I went and had my hair highlighted. It cost $85. When she was done, it was not the color blonde I had asked for. It was a brassy gold blonde highlights. I wanted platinum highlights. So she said it was not good for my hair to leave the bleach on any longer so come back in 2 weeks, and she would fix it lighter at no extra cost. Yesterday was 2 weeks so I went in and she fixed it and I wasn't charged anything. So no I don't think you should have been charged to fix it.

I called the business owner and told her about the situation. She was "appalled" and said I should not have been charged for a fix. Not only did she refund my money, she gave me a coupon for a manicure and pedicure on the house AND gave me a little bag of sample products with a beautiful gardenia scent bag.

That was very nice. She said she was going to have a talk with the gal who did my hair as it is not the policy of that spa to charge customers in instances such as mine.

Let me say I'm glad they could fix it for you, and I hope you are happy with it now!

I don't go to a salon that much -- maybe twice a year for a trim only -- and have only had my hair colored (highlighted actually) once, so maybe I'm not in touch with reality...

IMO - being charged for the touchup depends on (1) how long did you wait to go back? and (2) how much did they charge - full price again or just a nominal fee?

IMO - if you didn't wait more than a day or 2, they should not have charged. If you waited longer than that, I could understand them possibly charging you a nominal fee - after all, they have to cover the expense of the supplies/color they used to "fix" it and they have no way of telling if something you did (however innocently) caused this effect (hair products you used, swimming/chlorine, etc).

If I went back within a day or two and they agreed it was their doing or their product/color - I would not tip. If it was a little longer time and depending on how much work they had to do to fix it - I might tip 10% just because I'd be glad it was fixed :-)

She said she went on Friday, that would have been the 18th. She posted yesterday, 23rd. IMO that is a short enough time for her to see that the red was not going to tone down and I would have also gone back to have it fixed, expecting them to do it without a charge.

In a good salon, after they color your hair, whether you have it done on a regular basis or are a first timer, they should TELL you which products to use for colored hair, what do do and not to do to avoid color change (swimming, prolonged sun exposure...)

I would give a small tip, but would not pay for a normal touch up or color again.

She said she got it fixed and the situation was resolved by the owner of the salon. Good news. I know what it's like to have your hair done not to my satisfaction. I felt like wearing a hat!

Sorry -- didn't see her mention Friday the first time I read her message.

I agree, they should have told her what products to use or what might be harmful, but I have no way of knowing if they did so or not. (I'm guessing they did not.) Sounds like she might have gotten a very inexperienced hairdresser the first time around...

Overall, I agree that they should have fixed it and for free in that time span, and I am glad she called the owner to express her dissatisfaction. Also glad to hear the owner handled it so professionally and kept her customer happy!

No way they should have charged you. The only way I would feel good about charging a client is if they simply changed their mind and wanted something else. I did charge 1 client once, but only because she called me 3 WEEKS later telling me she was unhappy with her color. I was very nice and told her I would charge her half her normal fee since she practically needed her hair done again and in the future, she needed to let me know ASAP if there was a problem. I thought I was being pretty generous because I honestly just think she was broke, but she had been a client for a while, so you do what you have to do to keep people happy.

If it were me, I would not have charged you nor really expected, but would have appreciated, an additional tip. I mean, you had to take time out of your day TWICE.

Was this a chain sort of salon or the kind where you would think the stylists work/charge independently? I don't know what to tell you if the actual stylist recharged you, but if it is a chain, I would call the manager and tell her your concerns. Maybe they just weren't thinking. I hope your at least happy with your color now. That's stinks to have your experienced ruined :(
