Holiday Season

Posted: Nov 28, 2009

I get so resentful around this time of the year.  All the expectations!  It makes it hard to enjoy it.  Feeling like everything has to be perfect.  This year, I am so broke I'm not going to be able to have one of those "perfect" Christmases.  And I resent that.  Gosh, I wish it could just be another day!!!!

;

its sad... - how the holidays are now.

It used to be that the holidays were all about family togetherness and happy times spent with loved ones. Now the holidays have become so commercial that so few enjoy the times anymore. With the pressure to spend money you don't have and the expectation of gifts, where is the joy. My family gets so stressed this time of year, worrying that someone wont like their present, that someone will get drunk and start fighting. Its so much drama. It makes me thankful that I don't celebrate the holidays. I can be stress free this time of year.

Holiday season for me this year - Lynn

First of all have no small children to buy for. Every year some older hubby's side family members get together for dinner and chatting. I have bought much, much in the past. No so this year. Have told hubby probably will not join in this year. My daughter and I are planning a nice day catching up on some television shows she says she wants me to see, getting all the past shows so we will enjoy that way. Oh, 1 thing I am doing is buying some Christmas for some needy families. I am their secret Santa this year and so far I have gotten together Christmas for 2 families, 1 family has 4 children and the other family has 6!! That will bring enjoyment to me, reaching out to others.

Good for you! I do same but for dogs. - Vikefan

I hear ya. It's like birthdays. I worked for a large practice with 18 women in one office and we all bought gifts for each other. At one point, I said, if you must buy something, please get me dog treats, toys, food, etc. so I can give it to the pug rescue I volunteer for. I really couldn't think of anything I needed or wanted more than to see abused/abandoned/neglected animals get something extra around the holidays.

It is time that people contemplate what Christmas...sm - JMO

is really about: It is not about giving and receiving expensive gifts, stuffing oneself with Christmas food, getting drunk, etc....
Maybe this recession will bring people to rethink what it is all about, becoming humble and frugal again, and appreciate the value of small things and enjoying tukens that are not so expensive, as it is the thought that counts.
Merry Christmas!

I do not understand your post - L

[ In Reply To ..]
Not trying to be ugly or anything but just do not know what a tuken is. Is that a gift?

i think she meant token... - js

I agree that people should contemplate what Christmas is all about and consider why they are celebrating it in the first place. For most, it is tradition and something they have grown up doing. Look into the origins of Christmas and see whether it is worth celebrating at all.
thanks, js, yes, I meant 'token,' was a typo....nm - JMO

I got one of the girls some stuff to paint and decorate for small gifts for people on her list. She did a nice job and enjoyed it.

I was hoping to give $100 to each of the kids, but right now I am not sure if that can happen with work so slow. I'll be putting in extra time the next 3 weeks so that I can do this because they are all young and starting out, don't have much and that $100 is very handy for each of them.

I don't shop, I don't buy, I don't have time to make the usual things I do (I sew things) and there it is. Oh well.

Can we just skip December altogether - seems like a simple solution

I don't celebrate. It's not for any religious aspects as I honor the Lord all the time throughout the year.

It's because it's just so freakin depressing. I hate, hate, hate this time of year. I have been away from home for 30 years and I still get depressed not to be with family, and when I'm back with family I'm depressed I'm not with husband's family, and when we're not with either family I'm depressed. In fact I just realized tomorrow is December 1st and I'm already getting depressed. I only buy for dad and his girlfriend/wife and MIL (through catalog so we don't have to go to the store). Nieces and nephews get money and gift cards. But nobody celebrates for the spiritual aspect. It's buy buy buy. I absolutely hate getting gifts from dad because it's depressing to open them here by ourselves (we don't open on Xmas eve or day, I open right away so I'm not reminded of the day,and I work on the day so I can forget its that day. I hate going to stores now because at our WalMart they started setting up Xmas right around Halloween time. It's depressing so I don't go to the store unless I have to. And on top of being depressed about the holidays, I can't run my feelings off of DH as he doesn't feel the same way and once told me not to feel that way, and was mad at me for feeling that way once, so I just don't talk to him about it. It's just another day to him (he'd be fine never seeing his family again, so it doesn't bother him).

The only thing I like about Xmas is the lights and Xmas music (the old kind from the 60s and 70s I grew up with). The rest of it they can have it.

I'd love nothing better than for our calendar to go from Nov 27th to January 1st because the rest of the year is just a waste and stress for most people.

Okay, think I better go take a Zoloft. :-)

You said it, take that Zoloft - L

[ In Reply To ..]
There is no reason to hate the season (see I made a rhyme there). You are really suffering from the Debbie Downer syndrome, aren't you? I am not buying as much as I have in the past for family but what I am doing is trying to lessen the load of others who might not can afford for their small children. I had a lot and I mean a lot of ham left over from Thanksgiving. My daughter thought more people coming to dinner and bought a huge one. I found a family that was asking for food on Craig's and I made use of the ham and even took a few other things other like potatoes, dried beans, milk, bread and a few other things for the family. I get much, much more out of doing for others and this time of the year for the small ones. Pay it forward. Get out of that funk you are in.

I like your post - seems like a simple solution

[ In Reply To ..]
Truth be known I don't have any Zoloft :-), but a good bottle of red wine works as well too.

I liked your post. You seem like someone who knows the true meaning of the holiday. I do like the lights and music (the music is very uplifting). It's just always missing family and no, there is nothing I can do about that (no time to be able to take off, cost to travel, flu epidemic going around just factors out of my control, but that's okay and I understand it), but it still gets me down. I just never have liked Xmas much and when I hear about so many families out of work, not knowing how they will make ends meet, I just think its such a waste.

I have donated to feed a family in our town, two indian reservations, and a childrens charity, so that's about all I can do.

Maybe I'll go listen to xmas music and drink that bottle of wine to get me out of this "funk". LOL - you did make me smile and I thank you for that.

Vent About My Hubby During This Wonderful Holiday Season ... (sm)Dec 23, 2010
Every year at Christmas my hubby is able to take two weeks off, which is wonderful for him but is beginning to stink for me.  By the time his vacation is over I will be extremely resentful towards him and I hate that.  In years past he has always done everything he can to help me out while I am working, cleaning the house, wrapping presents, picking up little odd and end gifts, etc.  However, this year all he has done is lay on the couch and sleep after sleeping until 11:00 every ...

What I Learned This Holiday About Next Holiday ...Dec 27, 2009
I learned I will not purchase any gifts from the "wish lists" of the youth in our family.  Yes, this includes my own kids. Only 1 out of the 4 had any surprises at all in their gifts.  Mind you, these 4 range in age from 9 to 24 years.  The 24yo was surprised.  The other 3 knew exactly what they were getting - recognized the boxes - made such statements about knowing all their gifts.  Not hateful, not ungrateful but expectant. The 2 youngest are my nephews.  Neith ...

Holiday Squabble May 13, 2013
I have two grown 30+ year old sons who have jealousy and rivalry issues.  One son invited me, their step-dad, his sister, and his grandmother to lunch for Mother's Day.  I accepted and asked if his brother was invited and he said no.  I thought maybe my other son would be at his in-laws, but he wasn't.  He got hurt.  I tried to make other plans with him in the afternoon, but he was hurt and rude.  I finally told the oldest son that I would have to cancel l ...

Holiday Gift GivingNov 08, 2011
ONE GREAT IDEA!!! Christmas & Chanukah 2011 -- Birth of a New TraditionAs the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. There is no longer an excuse that, at giftgiving time, nothing can be found that is produced by A ...

Holiday Tipping QuestionNov 21, 2012
Here's my question - The owner of the salon where I get my hair cut and colored is the one who does my hair 95% of the time.  Her prices are very reasonable for the area where I live, about half the cost of other places around.  I've always tipped in the past, which she often refuses or gives me free product in return, and yes, I know you're not technically supposed to tip the owner of the salon, but I've always felt like you tip for good service.  I'm won ...

If You Are Opting Out Of Holiday Commercialism This YearOct 23, 2013
Since the holiday season is only about 2 months from now, I wanted to share this great idea that was just passed along to me from a friend. If you, or someone you know is bowing out of the commercialism and materialism of the holiday season by saying "no more stuff", you can register on the SoKind Registry so that the gift-giver instead can give "experiences" like various types of lessons (cooking, music, etc), national park passes, zoo memberships, classes to learn a new skill, hot balloon ride ...

Sarah Palin Questions Obama White House Holiday Card Dec 22, 2011
Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin (R) attacked the White House holiday card in an article on Fox News Radio. The front of the card shows the Obamas' dog, Bo, sitting in a very Christmas-like setting, with a fireplace decorated with wreaths and red ribbons, and a table with a poinsettia plant and presents. "From our family to yours, may your holidays shine with the light of the season," reads the inside of the card, which is signed by the Obamas (including Bo). Palin characterized ...
