government benefits. Obamacare has pushed us over the entitlements tipping point. In 2011 some 49.2 percent of U.S. households received benefits from one or more government programs—about 151 million out of an estimated 306.8 million Americans—according to U.S. Census Bureau data released last October. Currently, around 6 million to 7 million Americans who have signed up for Obamacare are receiving taxpayer-provided subsidies (though the administration’s numbers cannot be trusted, it’s all we have to work with). There are another 3 million who have signed up for Medicaid. That means some 10 million Americans—or a total of about 161 million—are now getting government subsidies (though the final number might be somewhat lower since some may have been receiving benefits already). ;

We need to recognize that at some point it has to - stop. There is no money.

There is so much wrong with that "opinion piece." How many times is each household counted? So they just add on anyone who is getting a subsidy for Obamacare? How do they know if that is a duplicated or unduplicated number?

Of course, the bigger question is how much is the subsidy going to save health care costs in the long run. Article is extremely short sighted.

It would take all day to explain the discrepancies in this opinion piece.

cousin, receive a disability payment from the US Department of Veteran’s Affairs for injuries, wounds, ailments and conditions received as a part of service to the country in uniform. Others get the military retirement they worked for 20 or 30 years to become vested in. Still others get the Social Security retirement they contributed to during their working lives. I do not equate the above with TANF, SNAP, SSDI, unemployment insurance, worker’s compensation.

There are definitely different kinds of government payments, but some people put all the benefits into one basket.

You have people who receive Social Security benefits after contributing to the program for decades. I do not equate the above beneficiaries with those who receive handouts simply for being born or sneaking into the country. There are even some Social Security payouts to people who have never contributed to the program. Again, that is a completely different matter than those Americans who contributed for decades and now deserve what was promised. They never should have started putting that in the general fund. I agree, they should have separated SS. It's still worth reading though.

There are benefits you earn and benefits you don't. They should have separated "entitlements" from "earned benefits."

Seems we constantly hear about how Social Security is going to run out of money. How come we never hear about Welfare running out of money? What’s interesting is the first group “worked for” their money, but the second didn’t.

With the Social Security Trust Fund exhausting faster than expected, another obstacle to the sustainability of the program is rearing its head: Social Security benefits rest on fewer and fewer taxpayers. This week's chart by Mercatus senior research fellow Veronique de Rugy uses data from the 2012 Social Security Trustees Report to show the number of workers that need to contribute to the system to ensure the benefits for one retiree.

Most of the major shifts in worker-to-beneficiary ratios before the 1960s are attributable to the dynamics of the program's maturity. In the early stages of the program, many paid in and few received benefits, and the revenue collected greatly exceeded the benefits being paid out. What appeared to be the program's advantage, however, turned out to be misleading. Between 1945 and 1965, the decline in worker-to-beneficiary ratios went from 41 to 4 workers per beneficiary.

The Social Security program matured in the 1960s, when Americans were consistently having fewer children, living longer, and earning wages at a slower rate than the rate of growth in the number of retirees. As these trends have continued, today there are just 2.9 workers per retiree—and this amount is expected to drop to two workers per retiree by 2030.

The program was stable when there were more than 3 workers per beneficiary. However, future projections indicate that the ratio will continue to fall from two workers to one, at which point the program in its current structure becomes financially unsustainable.

I've read so many posts on news sites where the younger generation "can't wait for those wrinkled, old fogeys (sp?) lay down and die off because they're the ones causing all the problems."

Oh, yeah. Like they're really trying to solve the problems of this country. I see them complain but never do they state that they're trying to do something about it That's not their job, one had said. It's the job of the government. Uh, huh, and therein lies the part of the problem.

Some 42 million are seniors receiving Social Security and Medicare. They aren’t getting something for free; they faithfully paid into the system for decades with the expectation that they would be getting it back at retirement. And they deserve every penny they get—or may not get if Social Security or Medicare has to cut benefits.

And we're all making lower wages and not contributing as much as before. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I have seen that argument on here repeatedly about how the left is trying to twist the right's words regarding the seniors receiving what they deserve. We see through that tactic. They don't want to open their eyes to the real truth behind all these government handouts and the lazy takers.

Also, sort of off topic. Hillary claims she gives her money from speaking engagements to charity. Here's the kicker: The charity is the Clinton Foundation.

What would you like them to do? You have all the answers. So, what should they do?

The money should be put towards veteran services to help with medical costs and homelessness. The money we send to foreign countries never seems to reach it's intended target and oftentimes ends up in the hands of terrorists, insurgents or whatever they're called these days. I splurged for my birthday and had my hair professionally colored on Friday.  I have natural dark brown hair with gray spatterings.  I wanted it a natural brown and decided on a shade lighter, hardly noticable. I have noticed that the roots look reddish since then and since I've never had my hair done I thought it was "normal" and it would tone down.  I finally called the salon back today and they told me to come in so they could see it.  They also noticed it was redder ...
