Sarah Palin Questions Obama White House Holiday Card

Posted: Dec 22, 2011

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin (R) attacked the White House holiday card in an article on Fox News Radio.

The front of the card shows the Obamas' dog, Bo, sitting in a very Christmas-like setting, with a fireplace decorated with wreaths and red ribbons, and a table with a poinsettia plant and presents. "From our family to yours, may your holidays shine with the light of the season," reads the inside of the card, which is signed by the Obamas (including Bo).

Palin characterized the card as "odd":

"It's odd," she said, wondering why the president's Christmas card highlights his dog instead of traditions like 'family, faith and freedom.'" "Even stranger than that was his first year in office when the Christmas ornaments included Chairman Mao," Palin said. "People had to ask that it be removed because it was offensive."

Palin was referring to when a right-wing blog posted a grainy photo, allegedly of an ornament on the White House Christmas tree in 2009 showing a reproduction of Andy Warhol's "Mao" portrait. Media Matters reported that the tree was decorated by community groups, not the White House.

Palin said a majority of Americans prefer "American foundational values illustrated and displayed on Christmas cards and on a Christmas tree." With regard to the card, she added, "It's just a different way of thinking coming out of the White House."

"I go on the offense like most Americans do and say 'No, we'll have Christ back in Christmas and hopefully it won't offend you,'" said Palin in a November 2010 Fox News appearance.

Palin fueled speculation on her future plans Monday after previously saying she would not run for the 2012 GOP nomination for president. "It's not too late for folks to jump in," she said on Fox Business Network. "Who knows what will happen in the future."

We all know that BO won't mention Christmas because he's Muslim, and it's part of the liberal agenda to attack our Christian values because they hate us. Just look at this "holiday" card completely and totally devoid of any mention of Jesus or Christmas. Thank goodness for people like Sarah Palin who stand up and say something!

that's a pretty extremist view - ...

[ In Reply To ..]
Why did you need to place "holiday" in quotes? There is nothing wrong with a holiday card. I presume you would be offended by a Jewish president, then?

Liberals hate Christians? It seems you are the only one throwing around the word "hate". How holy of you.

We live in a secular state. If you want to live where the head of state endorses a particular faith, you may want to move to a different hemisphere.

Ummm... my post was supposed to be totally - sarcastic

SP was using the Fox News drummed-up War on Christmas ridiculousness to get a few more minutes of attention and a quick dig at the President.

My point is that there is no War on Christmas other than in the imagination of Fox News and its viewers. If there is, then Fox is on the battlefield too. Not only do they not mention Christmas or Jesus in their card, but they insert their own name into the song parody where it is supposed to mention the Lord!

I agree with everything you said, BTW.

Take care.

Total lack of manners/courtesy on her part to dissect the meaning of the card trying to come up with something she can go ballistic about on her commentaries. She lives in an imaginary world and lost touch with reality years ago.

Can't she ever learn to keep her mouth shut - sm

Doesn't she realize how ignorant that looks. There is nothing odd about the card whatsoever.

I'm all for celebrating the real reason of Christmas. We don't celebrate outwardly (no tree, no kids, no gifts, no parties, but I do cook a special meal), but I give thanks to Jesus and acklowledge that history within myself.

I also realize that there are many cultures in America and many do not celebrate Christmas in the fashion that Christians do. I think it is proper to send out a Holiday card. Christmas is a holiday after all. Not many people are offended by people saying happy holidays instead of merry christmas. I learned my lesson a few years back when my mom and I went into a store we've been going to for years and I said to the clerk Merry Christmas. We walked out and my mom said "he's jewish" and said I should start saying happy holidays.

People can have the "Christ back in Christmas". Christ is such a personal relationship people have and they don't need to flaunt it all over the place.

I really think SP should learn to keep her mouth shut on issues she really has no business commenting about. Doesn't anyone close to her have the decency to tell her she looks pretty ignorant making comments like that out loud.

Please see message. - sm

You wrote, "Christ is such a personal relationship people have and they don't need to flaunt it all over the place."

I really liked your post and couldn't agree with you more. We're a country that is supposed to have freedom of religion. And many people indeed not only flaunt it, but they also turn up their noses, as if they are somehow superior to other religions.

You mentioned that Christ is such a personal relationship, and I couldn't agree with you more. In fact, it's probably even more intimate than your relationship with your significant other.

These people who complain about the fictional "war on Christmas" don't want equality in religion. They want superiority. I treat people from all religions with respect and tolerance. Isn't that what Christ would do?

Anyway, great post, and thanks for posting it.

Here is my big bet - Ethel

I would bet you a whole big bunch of chocolates that many who are so "offended" by "taking Christ out of Christmas" have not stepped into a church in 20 years, with the exception of weddings, funerals, potlucks, etc.
