Favorite Smoothie Recipe/s

Posted: Apr 18, 2013

We talk a lot about weight issues and nutrition here.  I have gotten myself on a pretty healthy lifestyle now, and one of my favorite things I make for a meal now is a smoothie. You don't need any fancy equipment. If you have a decent plain old blender, that will do just fine.

Throw a few ice cubes into the blender (always put frozens in first, then any solids in before liquids). I then take whatever fruit I have on hand (berries, bananas, peaches) and throw some chunks of that in. You can mix them all in there, or just choose one.  Then, I throw some almond milk in there and a little bit of vanilla extract. Blend it all up and it's delicious, like a milk shake.

FYI: I have completely switched from dairy milk to almond milk for everything I would use milk for, including cereal. Less fat, more calcium, more vitamins.

this is one of the ways Alton Brown lost 50 pounds - interesting

Almond milk is so much better for you than dairy. Alton made a smoothly every morning for breakfast with "blue" fruits: Blueberries, acai berries, etc. He said the health benefits of "blue" fruits dramatically outweighed the benefits of other fruits. He didn't use the almond milk, though. He would mix it up with other fruit from time to time, but included "blue" fruit every day. When I decided to try the Atkins diet, that was the first time I had tried almond milk. I really did like it, but only up to 8 ounces at a time. It gave me a dairy fix without the carbs. The calorie count with dairy is sky high.

You can throw yogurt in, too - nm

You might also throw in some deveined kale or spinach leaves. Surprisingly it doesn't change the taste hardly at all and you get the nutrients of some excellent greens too. Just don't mind the color.

PINEAPPLE/BANANA/SPINACH
I use my Vitamix, but any high powered blender will work. fill with fresh pinapple, handful or 2 of spinach, an 1 banana and the rest with pure water. blend. Let rest. Enjoy. This smoothie is thin.

Frozen berries, frozen broccoli, baby carrots - see more

Greek yogurt, protein powder, cherry juice, seedless grapes, oranges, apples, handful of nuts (walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, etc), oranges/citrus, apples, bananas, pineapple, peaches, pears, peanut butter, etc. I am going to chop some chocolate and throw a few cookies in it someday for an extra treat. I feel a lot better since starting on these for breakfast to sip on while I am working.

Kale, blueberry, banana, soy (or almond milk) and a touch of maple syrup --sm - anon

Another favorite has frozen cherries, cocoa powder, spinach, chia seeds and enough water to keep it moving. I often go to Dr. Joel Fuhrman for inspiration on the smoothies.

you can add wheat germ for a nutty crunch - lots of B vitamins NM

How about a roast chicken smoothie? - L&L

My molars are broken off and I'd really like to puree or liquify all my food.

Seriously, is no-fat 80-calorie/8-oz skim milk so bad for you? I didn't know you could milk an almond. What is the kosher thinking on that, separating meat and almond milk?

Skim milk is fine - but almond milk tastes better!-nm

OK, chicken smoothie . . . - No milk

Thai curry roast chicken smoothie . . . Cube up the chicken and puree in coconut milk. Might need some chicken broth. Add raw carrots, cucumbers, spring mix, cilantro or parsley, hot green peppers if desired, summer squash, bok choy, a dollop of peanut butter, and thai curry paste.

I just made that up . . . but it should be fine. ÏHot or cold.

Great Idea!!! - L&L

I put cilantro and curry powder in about everything I eat. Thanks for the idea. I should have been thinking more in the soup/stew venue.

Need A Recipe Dec 04, 2011
My in-laws are doing christmas eve brunch, and I am told to bring some type of hashbrown casserole. Any ideas?   Mom-in-law is making 2 kinds of egg casseroles, so I guess I should not put eggs in the hashbrown one.   I suppose I will check the Taste of Home website tomorrow, but if anyone has a recipe that they have already tried and know is good, that would be helpful.   Thanks in advance. ...

Cookie Recipe?Oct 20, 2009
My grandmom and my mom used to make these cookies at Christmas that were made with baking ammonia, yup, ammonia.  Sounds awful and the stuff smells horrible too.  You had to buy it from a pharmacist, and they still do sell it.  I did ask before going on this search!   They were the most wonderful cookies.  They would just melt in your mouth.  All I recall is that they were round cookies with kind of little cracks all around the edges and you coated them wi ...

A Great RecipeJan 01, 2013
A woman I met some weeks ago gave me a recipe for crustless pumpkin pie.  I went on line and found one which varied somewhat from hers.  (She uses egg beaters and Splenda in her recipe because her husband is diabetic, etc.)   The recipe I used was perfect!   If anyone would like to try it (maybe for next season) I will gladly share it.  It is great not having to worry about making a perfect crust, which is not my strong point.   I never heard of a cru ...

Is It Rude To Ask Someone For A RecipeMay 25, 2013
Last year we were sent a jar of the most delicious strawberry preserves from my BIL's girlfriend (her mother made it).  It was the most fantastic preserves I have ever had since I was a little girl and my mom made them.  I told her how much we enjoyed them and how it brought back so many warm memories of my moms homemade jam and told her to thank her mother and let her know. Really Fast Easy RecipeJun 03, 2011
I have a really easy, quick recipe.  It's sort of Sloppy Joes, but my own version.  Brown chopped meat in a skillet.  Add seasoned salt, onion powder, a hint of garlic powder, and black pepper and stir around.  Throw in some chunks of Velveeta cheese and stir until cheese is melted all through.  Serve on bun of your choice.  You can use regular American cheese, but the Velveeta tends to melt easier and clean up in the pan easier. ...

Hi All- I had a really good shrimp and grits dinner a while back while on vacation. I've tried the Internet, but OMG, there are soooo many, I don't know where to begin.
