Had to put our beloved Golden to sleep this morning.

Posted: May 11, 2011

Our golden retriever, Samson, was 12-1/2 years old.  He's meant so much to our family.  They discovered a tumor a year ago that we chose not to explore because he had renal failure and the anesthesia could have killed him.  Evidently it metastasized to his brain and possibly his spine, and a few days ago he lost the use of his hind legs.  Last night he started having seizures.  He went from 94 to about 72 pounds in the last year.  We took him to the vet ER this morning and decided it was time to let him go.

Life's not going to be the same.

My sympathies to you and your family at the loss of Sam. - Hayseed

12-1/2 years is a long time and he must have been very well loved and cared for. You made the hardest decision "parents" can make.

Life won't be the same but try to remember the happy times of which I am sure far outweigh the bad times. :)

Aw. I feel so sad for you. - Backwards Typist

It is such a hard decision to make but try to think of him being in a better place and healthy again and in no pain.

We had to do that 10 years ago for a tumor with our Golden Retriever/Lab and it was heartbreaking, so I feel your pain. Ours was only 10.

I am so very sorry to hear about it. - Linda Andrews

It takes courage to make the decision that is best for them and not necessarily for us. I waited too long once and I don't intend to do that again. This is the tough part of loving pets, isn't it?! I have tears in my eyes for you right now and I'm hurting with you. Wish we could give you hugs.

As you already know, I'm so sorry to hear about Sam. It's always so hard to lose a pet who is a member of the family. You'll never forget.

We are near that with our Westie....He is - MT 44

17 years old. "Champ" can hardly walk, has a hard time finding his way in and out of places, twitches and shakes a lot, and falls. I think some days he doesn't see well either. Cannot hear well. It is so sad, I feel guilty not being able to help him. Took him to the vet who gave him some steroids or something a couple of months ago and he did better but then we had to bring him back to get get his blood tested so she could prescribe some more but his kidneys were being affected so now she can't give him more so now he's really going downhill. At least he doesn't seem to be in pain that we can tell. The vet says he's not, but how do we really know? I sympathize with you on the loss of your pet.

So sorry - Grammy

I also have a golden and know what a special breed they are. I hope you find comfort in knowing that you gave Samson a wonderful life and many great memories.

Sorry for your loss - kjh

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss of your precious Samson. You have made one of the most difficult decisions any pet parent has to make. 12-1/2 years is a long time and I'm sure you have many memories that can help bring a smile to your face during the difficult days that lay ahead.

I am So Sorry! - alias

It is always so hard to lose a beloved family member of such duration, particularly to disease! My sympathies! Now I want to cry too. He will be on "the other side" waiting for you when the time is right. You will meet again and he will be disease free! Blessings to you and your family!

I underwent a similar situation about 2 months ago with my cat, but I chose hospice care by me for my kitty of 20 years. Found out she had mast cell tumors 2 weeks before she died. I just could not bring myself to make the decision so I just took care of her til the end. She also has a brother still living and he is in failing health also. My Patches just had a birthday Mother's Day. There is just something about Patches that we connect even though I am human and he is a cat. All my kids are grown now and Pepper was like my little child. I was devastated, still am. People that do not have pets just do not understand why we get so attached. They do become family members. I still am faced with the decision about my cat Patches that is in failing health. I had one kitty put to sleep because he had brain cancer. That was the hardest decision for us to make, but he was suffering so. Time does help ease the pain, but I will never forget all the kitties I have had in my life. May God bless you and your family with good memories and make the days ahead easier for you all.

My heartfelt sympathy to you and your family. It's especially hard because our pets are so completely dependent on us for everything in their world. Sam trusted you all of his life to do the right thing for him, which you did, even at the end. How fortunate you were to have Sam in your lives for so many years. It seems impossible right now to think of him without crying, but it won't always hurt this much. Know that many of us grieve for you and with you. ((((Samson's family)))

I'm so sorry to hear that. - Shirl

We had to put our 14-year-old Hines Variety to sleep in October. It was really hard. She was the first pet my DH ever had to put to sleep due to old age.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts! - RIP Sam

We've had so many warm wishes and prayers for our family today. It's comforting that there are so many people out there that don't even know us who care so much! Sam will be sorely missed, but he's left us with years of memories that will be with us forever. If there's a doggie heaven, he's there, chasing chipmunks and playing in the water!

So sorry for your loss. - ooo

It may not seem like it but you did the right thing for Sam. This will bring a tear but it will also bring you comfort - you will see him again!

RainbowBridge - Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

So very sorry - Christine

It breaks my heart to hear this. Thank God Sam had a good family who loved him and treated him with respect. You will never forget him. He will be in your heart forever. Take care, and know so many are thinking of you.

I had to put my dog down last May. Dusty had been with us since my youngest son was 3. Dusty was his 'best friend' and mine too. It was extremely hard. It gets a little easier at time goes by. For us, it was overnight. He had been a little strained with his breathing but had seen the vets four months before that. One night I reached down and pet him as he was laying beside the couch and felt a tremendous lump in his throat that had not been there the day before. I took him to the vet that afternoon and once we had him in the car on the way there, I knew that was it. He was having such a hard time breathing, I knew he could not come home. It broke my heart, but I know he was better off. We have another dog, so that helped, but he is no Dusty. He just had surgery a week ago and is doing well. He is 13 just like Dusty was. They were a year apart. It does get easier with time, but I still miss him trendously sometimes. Take comfort in the fact that he is in a better place now. Life definitely will not be the same, but you will get through it. Your in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm sorry to hear about Sam - Sunshine State MT

Okay, so like so many others, VR is going to destroy my financial future.  Thankfully, I can take early retirement soon, though that wouldn't have been my first choice.  But...here's what I wonder.  Just like the Golden Girls (Rue McLanahan, Bea Arthur, Betty White) pooled their resources, why can't some of US do that?  I mean, it would be a sacrifice for sure (I enjoy living alone)...but wouldn't it be wise?  I have a lovely home but live in a rural ...

Osteosarcoma In My Beautiful Golden. SmFeb 04, 2010
My 12-YO Golden was dx'd by x-ray only with osteosarcoma in his back knee and the doc said she recommended comfort measures only with approx. 2 mo. survival. Heartbroken, searching the web. He is beautiful, alert and walks with a limp, does whimper from time to time, but good appetite. The tramadol makes him a little sleepy. Started him on 1 before upping it to 2 as he seems to be resting. The non-steroidal will start in a few days as he's been on aspirin. I can't see putting him ...

Had To Put My Cat Montgomery To SleepMay 13, 2011
Right now i'm trying to escape intellectually but I cried hysterically when I took him in to get euthanized.  He has been through a lot with me, an awesome cat, even knew how to play fetch.  He stopped eating a couple days ago and started breathing heavily this morning with brownish drool.  He is usually very affectionate but wanted to be off by himself and was not responding, even to tuna and I have a way to say his name that makes him perk up and he would not even resp ...

Okay, so my husband has been eating in his sleep.  Sometimes he remembers doing it, and sometimes he doesn’t.  And he eats really weird things.  For a while there, he would drink pancake syrup right out of the bottle multiple times a week.  Last night, he “woke up” standing over the kitchen sink, eating a plate full of sour cream.  Could his sleeping pills be causing this?  ...

I'm just curious about how many of us working at home have the same routine. I get up in the morning and immediately heat up bottled water for coffee (I use a French press which makes a really perfect cup of coffee), then hop in the shower.  After that, I make my coffee and drink it while taking about 10 minutes to put on my mineral makeup (so much faster than the other kind of makeup), eyeliner, lip liner and lip gloss.  I then blow dry my hair, get dressed, make a second cup of ...
