had to put my cat montgomery to sleep

Posted: May 13, 2011

Right now i'm trying to escape intellectually but I cried hysterically when I took him in to get euthanized.  He has been through a lot with me, an awesome cat, even knew how to play fetch.  He stopped eating a couple days ago and started breathing heavily this morning with brownish drool.  He is usually very affectionate but wanted to be off by himself and was not responding, even to tuna and I have a way to say his name that makes him perk up and he would not even respond to that.  He was trying so hard just to breathe.  He was letting out scream-like meows.

I know he has been sick and I just hope he did not suffer.  He was fairly normal until the past couple of days, besides just slowing down and getting thin over the last year.  Sleeping more and playing less.

Named him Montgomery because I found him in Montgomery Wards parking lot in 1996.  He was just a kitten and soooo skinny, he had been starving.  He went through two cans of tuna fish in five minutes he was so hungry.  He liked to climb people and perch on their shoulders so we would joke and say he was part bird.

Anyway, just needed to vent that out, 17 years is a long time so I know I will miss his presence.  Thanks for letting me get that out

That is a painful thing to go through. Putting him down showed your love. I had to put down a dog that sat right by my desk while I worked for 13 years. I cried for 2 days, then I was scheduled to go back to work. The first day without her sitting there, I tried to work, I could not.

I know you are hurting. I will get better in 2-3 days.

RIP Montgomery - sm

His end was so similar to my Whiskers'. It sounds like Montgomery was a great companion, and it sounds like you provided a happy home for him. Hugs to you.

I'm so sorry to hear about Montgomery. I went through the same thing about six months ago. It's hard to know when to let go. I'm sure he loved you and had a wonderful life.

Sorry about Montgomery! - Hope this brings a little comfort

Sounds like you & Montgomery had a happy life.

Don't know if you've ever seen this poem, but it always brings me comfort. It's called Rainbow Bridge:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I was also going to post a copy of Rainbow Bridge. You will see your dear friend in the next life (whatever you perceive it to be). I truly believe that animals go to heaven - because like children they are so pure. Take care of yourself..
thank you guys - sm

That was a very lovely poem. I was able to visualize as I read it and it gave me lots of comfort :).

When we got home, my husband immediately cleaned all Monte's blankets and vacuumed up his fur out of his room and threw away all the cat supplies. I had cat litter and food on the grocery list I wrote yesterday :/ just weird feeling. Thank you all for the support.

When I wrote 17 years, that was a typo, its 15, I've been an MT 17 years so wasn't thinking when I typed it.

Does anyone cry when they read that poem?

Every darn time I read this beautiful poem about our "critter children" I ALWAYS CRY MY EYES OUT, and I have a lump in my throat like right now.

My vet has that poem in all her exam rooms, and I've read it again and again, and again and again it makes me CRY.

What's up with that?
I ALWAYS CRY TOO! - oaf

I think it is very cleansing. If we didn't cry - we wouldn't be human. Pet lovers are the best people on the planet! If I were younger I'd go back to school to be a vet (except if they had to be euthanized I'd send them elsewhere)..
Happens to me every time! -nm - MT Wordz

So sorry to hear about your sweet Montgomery. Thank you for doing what you did for him and bringing him into your home when nobody else would. You made one of the hardest decisions a pet parent has to make when it comes to our furbabies and I'm sure Montgomery knows how much you loved and cherished him and he's playing right now across the rainbow bridge with the other bridge kids and bridge kitties.

My husband and I just lost one of our boys, Duey, (we have guinea pigs) today and eventhough I have a cold and feel like crap, my heart is broken because it is so hard to see his brother, Huey, looking around the cage trying to figure out where Duey has gone.

So sorry for your loss! - NYMT

We lost our dog of 12 years this week, too. 17 years is so long! I'm sure you have thousands of wonderful memories of Montgomery. It will get easier I'm sure, and the good memories will be what's left in the end.

I am so sorry. That is tough beyond words. - Linda Andrews

I hurt for you. That's a tough price we pay for loving our pets, but it's sure worth it.

You are so right, Linda - Christine

I have loved my family's pets like they were little kids. When you love hard you hurt just as hard. Still, all in all I have to say having a close relationship with an animal is one of the most wonderful things a person can experience. I hate to hear when one of us loses her precious friend. It certainly sounds like Montgomery was very much loved and had a good life.

Please Pray For Mrs. Montgomery.Jun 01, 2010
Mrs. Montgomery is the mother of one of my best childhood friends.  We lived two houses apart during middle and high school.  We used to have sleep-overs and were pretty inseparable for a good number of years. My friend now lives in California, so we don't see each other as often as we would like.  She is in town now and her mother (Mrs. Montgomery) had to have a knee replacement about a week and a half ago. She had to be re-admitted to the hospital due to severe pain and f ...

Sleep-eating? Feb 28, 2011
Okay, so my husband has been eating in his sleep.  Sometimes he remembers doing it, and sometimes he doesn’t.  And he eats really weird things.  For a while there, he would drink pancake syrup right out of the bottle multiple times a week.  Last night, he “woke up” standing over the kitchen sink, eating a plate full of sour cream.  Could his sleeping pills be causing this?  ...

Have To Share After Having The Best Nights Sleep I Have Had In Years ... (sm)Oct 04, 2010
Hubby and I bought a new mattress over the weekend, it is a Serta Memory Foam mattress.  We actually purchased this at Big Lots of all places, regular $1000.00 and we paid $400.00.  I have had problems with my back for the last several years and generally toss, turn and wake up several times during the night, to the point of finally giving up, getting up and getting on the sofa.  Last night I was extremely skeptical, went to bed and when I laid down on the mattress I felt like I w ...

Had To Put Our Beloved Golden To Sleep This Morning.May 11, 2011
Our golden retriever, Samson, was 12-1/2 years old.  He's meant so much to our family.  They discovered a tumor a year ago that we chose not to explore because he had renal failure and the anesthesia could have killed him.  Evidently it metastasized to his brain and possibly his spine, and a few days ago he lost the use of his hind legs.  Last night he started having seizures.  He went from 94 to about 72 pounds in the last year.  We took him to the vet ER ...

CPAP MACHINE (sleep Machine) Feb 21, 2010
I got one on Monday and for some reason I take it off at 3am. My DH said he came in later to check on me and I snoring like a logger.
