But on the dialect issue, I've noticed others who slip into another dialect when they're around people with very strong speech patterns. My brother, who was raised in a totally different state, would often pick up a little bit of a Pennsylvania accent when we spent a day around our cousins from Pennsylvania who had a very strong accent. Oprah Winfrey has said that she has a tendency to do that, too, and she's afraid people think she might be making fun of them, but she's not--she just can't help it. I don't think it's a totally unheard of or "abnormal" thing to do, personally.

Some of us continue to speak ebonics in the company of our peers even though we clean up our pronunciation and grammar for job interviews and the work place.
