Forgive me please, it has been a long day and while I looked at the old post to remember the title, as soon as I opened the dialog box to start a new thread, I forgot it!!  That is what typing for 15 hours will do for you, plus knowing that I only made $102.00 in that 15 hours!

Anyway, I wanted to share what progress I have made and trust me, for me this is HUGE!  I have emailed the program director at the local technical college asking her advice about a 46 YO (ME) entering into the dental hygiene program.  There just are not many choices in my area, they range, literally from nursing (both LPN and RN), medical assistant (pay stinks), dental hygienist, dental assistant, x-ray tech, surgical tech, computers (ready to throw this 1 out of the window), teaching and accounting.  Honestly, that is it!  After debating back and forth between surgical tech, x-ray tech, registered nurse and dental hygienist, I have set my sights on dental hygienist for several reasons.  I am not particularly interested in dealing with patients as a nurse or x-ray tech would have to.  I really considered a surgical tech because I have always been facinated with surgery (even had the opportunity to "assistant" a surgeon that I worked for years ago when we were medical secretaries, fill-in "nurses" and "oh, can you keep the kid if the wife drops it by for about 2 hours while you are working today" all rolled into 1) but sadly the pay for a surg tech in my area is not too much above what I am making now.  Dental hygiene, however, is apparently a very lucrative field.  After researching I see that they generally make around $60,000 a year and mostly work part-time, 3-4 days a week.  THAT I can handle, lol.

So, with all of this in mind, I, very nervously, sent the email off to the program director explaining to her my situation, asking her about the program and her opinion on whether she thinks that a 46 Y/O can make it through the program.   As nervous as I was in sending the email, you would have thought that I was actually attending my first class, lol.

Anyway, that is my update.  Thanks so much for everyone that answered the thread below and for the encouragement.  Also, I want to wish everyone who is currently in school, thinking about going back to school or has finished school, my best wishes !  Never when I started out as a MT over 23 years ago would I think that I would be contemplating returning to school but we do what we have to.

Again, good luck to everyone and I will let you know if I hear back from the program director.  Sorry this is so long but thanks for listening!!

Congrats on taking your first step. I'm in my fourth semester going for a degree in social work. All on line so far but I was still nervous wondering if I could handle the work load. I'm 38, not quite 40s yet, and am getting all A's. I really enjoy it. Good luck!

RETURNING PHONE CALLSMay 25, 2011
If you leave a message that you need someone to call you back, how much time goes by before they are just being rude for not getting back to you?  My sister-in-law screens her calls and half the time doesn't answer the phone, then doesn't call back.  After four days of waiting the last time I sent her an E-mail by way of her daughter (she doesn't have a computer) and she got a little huffy with me.  Am I being difficult?  ...

"Wal-Mart Returning To Full-Time Workers-Obamacare Not Such A Job Killer After All?"Oct 17, 2013
Wal-Mart Returning To Full-Time Workers-Obamacare Not Such A Job Killer After All? Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest employer, announced Monday that 35,000 part-time employees will soon be moved to full-time status, entitling them to the full healthcare benefits that were scheduled to be denied them as a result of Wal-Mart’s efforts to avoid the requirements of Obamacare. While some analysts believe that the move comes as Wal-Mart is attempting to deal with the negative view many ...

This Puts Healthcare Into Easy To Follow May 16, 2017
Because the reality is that not having health insurance doesn’t mean that the Billys of the world die on the street. Instead, they die of poverty. We need to tell the stories of 1,000 Billys. Not the ones with famous, millionaire parents, but the ones we see in our clinics every day whose parents face the choice of keeping a low paying job or losing it to qualify for government assistance, or whose mortgages are three months late in the face of crippling bills. Without names and faces, affo ...

Need Opinions Please About School (sm)Jan 24, 2011
I am currently looking into returning to school like so many other MTs out there.  There are programs where you can get an Associates Degree in Healthcare Management (basically medical records), which I am really not interested in because, as I see it, most hospitals are trying to cut down their medical records departments to as slim of staff as possible, plus with the integration of EMR, I just do not see this being a lucrative field.  IF, big big IF here, I were to enter into this pr ...

Need Advice About School.Sep 06, 2011
I made sure that I taught my son to read, add and subtract before he began kindergarten.  I talked to the principal at the public school to see if they can accommodate him or if she thought I should look in to public school.  She assured me that they wanted my son at thier school and that they would be sure to keep him busy and learning.  So far, he has learned nothing.  They do not have him reading.  They only have him identifying letters, which is something my 2-year-o ...

Back To School . . . Aug 13, 2010
It is that time again.  School is about to begin and we will be sending our children into the classroom to be with educators who we think are safe for our children to be around.  Please, please, please, listen to your children.  If they feel uneasy about a teacher/situation, listen; and do something about it! At the end of the last school year I posted on this board because I felt and my child felt uncomfortable about changing a shirt in the classroom for a field trip.  Almos ...

Looking into going back to school, but trying to decide which career choice to make, although only one is probably optional at tihs point as I have to work while going. Anyway, I have filled out my FAFSA for one school and it was sent, but I am not registered as of yet. Now I want to fill out another FAFSA for the other school that I will probably end up going to, but a friend of mine told me I can't fill out more than one FAFSA for different schools. Is this correct? I don't thi ...

Safe School CzarOct 22, 2009
A teacher was told by a 15-year-old high school sophomore that he was having homosexual sex with an "older man." At the very least, statutory rape occurred. Fox News reported that the teacher violated a state law requiring that he report the abuse. That former teacher, Kevin Jennings, is President Obama's "safe school czar." It's getting hard to keep track of all of this president's problematic appointments. Clearly, the process for vetting White House employees has broken down. I ...

What Was Your Funniest Prank In School?Nov 20, 2009
I went to a junior high school that had been added on to so many times, there was often no way to get from one side to the other on the same floor without going down one level and back up another.  Well, we had this tunnel going to the cafeteria.  My girlfriend and I hated the principal so we decided to get even.  We brought eggs to school and egged the tunnel going to the cafeteria then took off running to the gym.  We were dying laughing.  We were about 13 or so.  ...

Looking For Anyone In Their 40s Who Have Started Back To School (sm)Jan 16, 2011

Anyone Do Online 'virtual' SchoolJan 21, 2010
I'm considering doing the virtual school for my son next schoolyear, which will be his 6th grade year. He's struggling this year in 5th grade and I'm worried that he might not be ready for middle school in August. In my state, GA, we have an online public school that sounds very good. I'm just wondering if anyone, from any state, has any experience with this and what your thoughts are on this type of education. I'd love to put him in a private school (I think) but right ...
