16-year-old girl missing at sea

Okay, so the parents think this child knows what she is doing so they let her sail around the sea, BY HERSELF???? What is good gawd's name is going on in this world. The girl is a child for pete's sake. She hasn't even graduated high school, not onld enough to drink, just old enough to have her drivers licence and they let her go out to see all alone??? Trusting your child is one thing. We're talking about the ocean where even the most experienced fisherman are lost at sea with some of those huge waves (swells?).
All I have to ask is have people lost all sense of reality? I'm sorry - 16 years old is still a child. Did the parents not love her enough to say...hey sweetie I really trust you but the ocean is very unpredictable, no you are not going to go out into the ocean all by yourself. What if you got sick, what if, what it, what if. Did they not love her that they don't care wether or not she would die at the ocean. That's what it appears like to me. Either that or there is some invisiblle radation or something being aimed at people to render them idiots.
Geez man...that poor little girl. The decisions some people make really make me wonder what in the world is going on with people.

[ In Reply To ..]I say none of us are in a position to judge. We may see 30 seconds of infotainment on television and think we are qualified to pronounce judgment, but we know essentially nothing about the situation and we're just squawking like so many mindless parrots.

NOT on school time or school money, but he wanted to go and I said ABSOLUTELY NOT! The teacher even called me and was telling me of the great learning experience he would have, but it wasn't happening, I have an obligation to protect my child.

Call it judgement or whatever you want to call it, I don't understand what is wrong with parents to allow a child to enter a dangerous situation knowing something will happen to the child.

I don't know what goes through the heads of these types of parents. Allowing her to do that while still a minor seems like a form of exploitation in a way.
She's one of the lucky ones that survived. Remember the little girl from Half Moon Bay, CA who was allowed to fly a plane on some sort of a publicity-type, record-attempt trip? Even with an adult (her grandfather, or instructor, I believe), she was allowed to take off in a bad storm in Montana and crashed, killing all. The adult on board should've had the sense not to take off at all.
And Colorado's "Balloon Boy". Even though it turned out he was never aboard the balloon, it was a publicity stunt, and he was being exploited and coached to lie.
Stupid parents like those should be spayed and neutered.

[ In Reply To ..]Our 11 p.m. news in California where she lives said the Australian Air force sent a plane out to search for her and they found her. She is fine, as is her boat, it sounded like the boat capsized but righted itself again. She was able to communicate with the jet.

So some might call me overprotective, but with the bad weather, pirates, human trafficing, and the mind-set of a 16yo (even if she is considered mature) I just would not think that was a wonderful idea. Trusting your child is one thing...let her sail all by herself in oceans where the waves get so huge that even the most experienced fisherman get into trouble themselves is just plain insane.
