Can you get electric fence to keep people out?

Posted: Dec 31, 2009

My daughter just called, the second time someone has either tried and/or broken into her home in the last couple of weeks, the first time just before Christmas and last night at around 2 oclock in the morning. She got an alarm system. Apparently the people did not read the alarm system warning stuck in the yard (that is if they could read) and this time threw something through a backdoor that is glass. I told her the first time her sliding glass door was not safe. The police were dispatched right away by the security company and they called me as well as her exhusband (he went over to her home armed), the police got there and this time nothing taken but still, to be broken into so violates your own self. I went on line just a minute ago, see electric fencing for keeping out animals, well these are about the same except I think deers and the like much nicer than these creeps doing this. Anyone with ideas? TIA

How horrible for all of you. Break ins are traumatic and you do feel violated, even when they haven't even actually stepped into your home.

Electric fences might work, but you need to check the city ordinances and laws, unfortunately many seem to working against private home owners protecting themselves and their properties and don't allow residents too many options as far as putting up protective barriers. (razor wire would be nice.)

I took a concealed weapons class, got my license and keep a handgun within reach. I keep a shotgun in the house also.

BEFORE RANTING STARTS: I am a single female, living alone in an wooded, kind of isolated area. I have had several scares and one break and enter that left my home ransacked and I was terrified to be there for weeks after. I DON'T WANT dog, I HAVE a burglar alarm...)

I put up fencing, at a HUGE expense, no trespassing signs. Now I have a custom sign that says TRESPASSERS WILL BE SHOT. It's been (fingers crossed) 3 years now and so far, nothing has happened.

After an experience like that though, it tramatizes you and you actually never really feel safe again.

No, I'm not going to move. It is very old, family property.

...and as a security professional I strongly advocate the ownership of firearms by law-abiding citizens. Even worse for the anti-gun fanatics, you should know that the statistics are on my side - not yours.

Americans use firearms to prevent or interrupt violent incidents thousands of times every year, but for the most part these incidents never make headlines unless it happens to be a 90-year-old woman holding three 20-year-old burglars at bay with her pistol. In other words, a "human interest story".

The incredibly small percentage of lawfully-owned guns that are involved in accidents or misused - now, THOSE make headlines. Never forget that we have a liberal, mush-headed press corps.

Nor does the fact that states with the most restrictive gun laws have either greater or roughly proportional numbers of gun-related crimes compared with much less restrictive states ever hit the headlines.

As Robert Heinlein said: "An armed society is a polite society". You nailed it, Bob.

No rant from here either - Happy MT Robin

Just make sure that if something happens and you have your weapon out you are absolutely ready to use it. A lot of incidents happen when the gun is taken away from its rightful user.

Also, if you end up shooting someone and he is either on your front porch or ends up on your porch or yard, drag him back in the house. Where I live, it's pretty cut and dried that you will not be prosecuted for shooting an intruder in your home, but it's a little more gray if they're in the front yard.

To the OP: What about wrought iron? I installed that on my house after I moved in. I live alone and its always made me feel a little more secure. If someone really wants to get in, it's not going to stop them completely, but chances are they'll go find an easier target first.

I've often wondered how LEOs feel about the concealed carry law. Not only did I have to take classes and do time at the range (I missed 1 stinking shot and it went into the right arm instead of center mass - I still hit the brachial artery, darn it - LOL!), I had to have an FBI background check and be fingerprinted to get my concealed carry license. When I carry, I am super aware of my surroundings at all times, especially what is behind me or to the side of where I am carrying. I sometimes have a second firearm at my ankle or in my purse. Nice little .22 Ruger.

It's amazing that guns are banned in Japan, yet they have a much higher suicide rate. They're banned in NYC unless you REALLY know someone and look at the crime there involving guns. Morons like Plaxico Burress make gun owners, especially people with concealed carry licenses look bad.

As far as the kids with the guns, well, either there's something not right with the kid, the parents are not teaching the kids about guns or both. When my dad got a hand gun, he called me into his bedroom, showed me where it was (I was probably about 12) and told me if I ever touched it (he was not a violent man), that he'd break all 10 of my fingers and I knew darned well he meant it. I never touched it. Of course, he had also taken away any curiousity by showing me how to shoot it and our rifle.

I hope and pray I never have to shoot an invader but don't think for a second that I won't. I probably will yell STOP! but it will occur only a fraction of a second before I shoot the intruder if they don't leave.

Thanks for posting those stats. So many people would rather just see the other side where someone gets killed with their own gun when in reality, lots of people are able to defend their own homes every year with their own weapons.

Right to retreat - Vikefan

[ In Reply To ..]
I forgot to add that Ohio had that stupid "Right to Retreat" law for awhile when they first passed concealed carry, where you had to first try to get away from someone who was trying to attack/kill you before you were allowed to shoot them. The Castle Doctrine changed that. You no longer have to try to run away or stand in your house yelling "shoo" at the intruder. :-)

We do have a pretty nice second line of defense here, though - old people. Don't knock 'em. Some of them may be nosy but they'll watch your house better than a Doberman. I return the favor on my walks with my dogs.

Neighborhood crime watches do a lot of good too. When I lived in CT, we had a pretty nice section of town but at the end of the street, it was decaying something awful and it was moving up our street. We started a crime watch, put up signs, had yearly meetings with a pot luck dinner and the police and fire department came by, and we all got involved. We stopped the crime in its tracks. Don't underestimate neighborhood involvement.

I like the "trespassers will be shot" sign idea. I bet that - would make them think twice!

Signs - Vikefan

[ In Reply To ..]
I like it too. Or something like "If you can read this sign and you're trespassing, you have 5 seconds before you're shot." Of course, that might make UPS and Fedex fearful. LOL. Then again, we're giving these criminals the benefit of the doubt that they can read.

We got our property fenced, regular chain link. It was quite expensive, but whatever... Then, we hired a guard dog agency to bring their big, mean dogs around once in a while, at night. Let me tell you, THAT WORKED! Those dogs BARK would scare the evil out of anyone! (the dog handler would stay in an RV in the carport just in case.)

If that's not a viable option, has your daughter considered wrought iron on the windows and doors? We also, ultimately made the decision to have a shotgun in the house. There are no kids...

It's a damn shame that we have to do things like this. I feel for you. It is very traumatic. Stay safe. You are in my thoughts.

You can probably install a fence... - ...if...

[ In Reply To ..]
...you can cite an "animal reason" for having one (either keeping yours in or others out)...

...and providing you properly post the required signage warning about the fence.

The fact that an electric fence happens to work on humans as well as animals is merely an unavoidable characteristic because of the way electric fences work.

And, when you think about it, almost all security devices (e.g. motion detectors, window-smash sensors, etc.) would not distinguish between a deer crashing through your slider versus a human, so there's nothing unusual about the fact that an electric fence also would not differentiate.

If you have an "animal justification", and if electric fences are not completely outlawed in your town (talk with the zoning people, not the police), the person that you MUST talk to about this would be your home owner's insurance agent. And, even with him, I would not mention the "human" motivation - just that you're having "deer problems" or whatever. If he already knows about the burglaries, though, he might know what you're doing, and why.

P.S. - Electric fence signs

[ In Reply To ..]
Laws/regs usually call for signs on electric fences to be posted in letters of a minimum height, and at minimum intervals along the fence. The company that installs such a fence will know what the requirements are for your area.

Tired of this, again. They stole HER gun the - first time they broke in

[ In Reply To ..]
she did have 1. She just called me and reported they tore up her fence to enter her home at the back, she had pad lock on that. DHH and I are headed that way today - he can fix anything and everything- and right now with it being New Year's - hard to get anyone to fix things and I understand that. She will definitely get another gun, trained with that one and knew how to handle.

Small town outside of Atlanta and the crime here now - Tired

[ In Reply To ..]
in and around Atlanta is horrific. The first time the crooks took her gun, some jewelry I gave her a couple of years ago, turned her house upside down looking for ? They bypassed her wide screen television, some diamond earrings and her diamond engagement ring in her bedroom. She had most of her prized gadgets with her including her notebook, Ipod and whatever the younger crowd likes. She is so security conscious that even at work she keeps her notebook under padlock because people sometimes have sticky fingers, even at job sites. She keeps no huge amount of money at her home, no drugs for them. She lives in a county outside of Fulton County, where Atlanta is, I am in another county closeby but still the amount of crime going on now in and around is just beyond belief. Stores are having the smash and grab and those thieves can be in and out of a company in about 3 minutes and know exactly what they are grabbing. It makes no difference where you live, one pediatrician in a very unscale section of town was herself robbed about a week ago. She hid in the closet as the people were breaking in. I myself lived in Atlanta proper for 30 years and my house broken into at least 6 to 7 times, for what? Ramshacking, stealing, just something to do. Home invasions (with people inside) are going on here all the time now. Really sad. Hubby and I will be going over there in a short while to see what he might be able to do today.

I forgot, they took some of her food out of her - Tired

refrigerator also the first time. She has a door person coming Sunday. I hope she and I can buy her a gun today, again. She really needs one as she lives alone.

I doubt it's legal, but.... - Vikefantam

[ In Reply To ..]
Sorry - I know this is a very serious issue but a human electric fence is a funny thought. I'd just love to see creeps like that get several volts thru their bodies for trying to break in. Would be even better if there was enough juice to char them but there would be worries about children, etc. Unfortunately, we civilians don't make the laws. Are guns legal where she lives? Is she afraid of them? If not, why not get one (if she has kids, she would need to take precautions) and take a gun safety course? When I married a navy man and moved miles away from home, he got me a gun, showed me everything there was to know about it - loading, unloading, firing, cleaning, etc. I kept it by the bed. I now have a concealed carry license and carry a Glock .40. Another option is a dog. She doesn't have to get a pitbull (and they have a worse reputation than they deserve for the most part). It could be a Boxer or German Shepherd.

It is a very violating feeling to have someone break in. I'm sorry for what she is going through. It's terrible that we have to go to such extremes to protect ourselves. I've spent enough nights alone because of DH's work schedule and a few of them, I've had to search the house with gun in hand and my heart hammering in my chest. It's not a fun feeling. In the meantime, my 2 pugs remain sleeping in the bed.

Maybe she can get suggestions from the police department or haven't they been helpful? I hope things get better and they catch the creeps.

Vikefantam, she had a gun, it was stolen in the first breakin - Tired of this

Her ex now but her husband then had bought it for her, they went to the shooting range and she does know how to use. stolen in the first breakin. I asked her if she wanted to go get another and she and the exone will go and get another. In the meantime, hubby and I have taken New Year's Day going to Lowe's and buying reenforcements for her fence and hubby fixed her fence today. They took crowbar apparently and broke that the 2nd time, smashing in glass back door and apparently scattering when the new alarm system went off. She has filed complaints with the police. Helpful? Not really, too much of that going on now in and around Atlanta. I am sure they have their hands full. She is having the glass doors at back completely replaced with more study ones, getting the lights on, replaced, whatever is needed around the house. She probably will look now for a roommate, has not had in some time but needs a vehicle there, it seems, most of the time so people think someone is here. It is a shame, really.

They stole her gun? Good grief. Any idea if it was the same people both times?

I've been to Atlanta once, back when we were living in Charleston, only to go to Six Flags (awesome park!) and there were some baaaaad areas around there.

I honestly think a protective dog would be better than a roommate but it's her decision. I always sleep with my bedroom door locked and there have been a couple of times that I've heard strange things that have made me wake up, throw on my glasses and grab the gun and it probably takes all of 1/2 second or so. It's amazing how quickly the brain registers things - like when I fell and broke my foot and my brain registered 8 cracks in that split second (only 1 bad fracture, most of my joints crack anyway).

I hope this isn't too personal to ask, but is she in a bad neighborhood? Thankfully, we're not, but we had to pay thru the nose to live where we do now. We're in what is referred to the "old rich section" of town. I guess 30 years ago this *was* the rich section but believe me, we hardly live in a mansion. Just a 1 story house, 1200 square feet each level (1st story and full basement) and an acre of property. I've seen people driving very slowly down the street with a camcorder taping the houses, and I've flown out the door to stand at the end of the driveway, just to let them know they've been seen. I'm pretty sure I can defend myself. My fear is someone breaking in while I'm gone and harming one of my dogs. They're so defenseless and would do nothing but want the intruder to pet them. I would die if something happened to them.

I take precautions when I'm gone like leaving lights and the TV on. I alternate which rooms I leave lights on in. Hubby is on rotating shift work (6 days, 2 off, 7 afternoons, 1 off, 7 midnights, 5 off) so that helps because you never know for sure when his car is going to be there. And I live near a lot of retired older people, though that is changing as they die, move to nursing homes and assisted living facilities, etc. We've lost 4 residents in the past year and only 2 homes have been sold.

Anyway, please keep us posted on your daughter and how she is doing. Seeing a counselor couldn't hurt. Knock on wood, I've never had it happen to me at home, but it happened 2 placed where I've worked and I know how invaded it makes you feel.

God bless the both of you!

Here lately around and in town all places seem bad - Tired of this
[ In Reply To ..]
I posted where a pediatrician in a very upscale part of town had a home invasion the other day, while she was in the house! Talk about a scary place. She went in the closet and called the police as people were in her home. Very ritzy part of town. Where my daughter lives is not the best, but then the best, lets talk about those. They are being invaded also. Hubby and I live 2 counties over from her supposedly in a "good" section yet we have had breakins in our home owner association community, several of those. I understand what you mean about good but it does not matter anymore where you live, it happens all over the place. No community is immune. For example, if you can get into the White House without an invitation, need I say more? She does not have protective dogs, she has barkers, 2 of them. I am going now to Walmart to see if they have pepper spray in the sporting section. I know a close by hardware store carries but they are not open today. Oh, the kids and I went to Six Flags here years ago and not where we go anymore, not a good crowd there now. No one has an idea if same people both times by the way.
Home invasions - Vikefan
[ In Reply To ..]
Barking dogs are good too. At least they can alert her. And you're right -home invasions are happening everywhere. IMO, it's partly the horrible economy, partly drugs and partly other things. We have one of those "security doors" on our front door. It's a screen/storm door with a grill on it. Then we have a heavy front door. I'm not impressed with our back door.

Pepper spray is a good thing. Mace is better, though I believe it is illegal. I think you can find it at flea markets and gun shows.

You are right that crime can happen anywhere. As far as the White House, I think there's more that went on than we know about but they had better get their act together. As much as I don't like the pres, I don't want anything to happen to him. I don't like him because of his politics. There are nuts out there who don't like him specifically because of his skin color and that's very sad (heck, I'd love a little more pigment - I burn like a lobster in the sun). It also makes him a pretty big target.

Used to be criminals would try and rob you after you left your house. Now they don't care. I read a lot of true crime (Ann Rule, specifically - she's the one who worked with Ted Bundy and wrote a book about him). I watch a lot of true crime on TV too - 48 hours Hard Evidence, Forensic Files, Dateline, etc. It baffles me what people do to each other. I'd be projectile vomiting everywhere if I did some of that stuff to another human being. I think I'm so fascinated by that stuff because I try so hard to understand it.

It looks just like a real gun - Tired of this

[ In Reply To ..]
I was so tired yesterday, took off from work to try and reenforce daughter's home. Hubby worked on the gate the thives had busted, fixed locks inside and out both. We came home and then after resting awhile I went to Walmart and got a fast firing BB gun, the BBs and the cartridge, also a baseball bat and took all that to daughter last night. The gun had notice on it not to show in public as you could get in trouble because it does look real, like a 45, good. She has someone coming today to fix outside lights, a friend of hers and if they do not have the ladder necessary to get high motion lights fixed, then I will get a company over there Monday. She will be working but off day for me. She gets new doors in on Sunday for the smashed out glass door at the back. I can meet the security people on Monday so they can reinstall the alarm system. That went out when the door busted out. It is a real shame to have to live like that. She is now talking about getting a roommate in, again because of 1) someone else being there, 2) assistance with paying some of the debt she is incurring presently.
