What is your average electric bill every month?

Posted: Jan 5, 2010

I am so frustrated. My electric bill "automatically" goes up $20 or more in the winter. In the summer, I pay $78-80. In the winter $100-120.

I called the electric company and they told me it's because we're in the house more often because it's cold out.  I think they're nuts and just don't want to check out the meter. They also stated my appliances could be too old or the gaskets aren't tight (checked before I called and they are tight) and the well pump could have blown a gasket (no air when running water). Then they told me to unplug everything when not using: the coffee pot; microwave; cell phone charger; toaster, etc.

There is only DH and me. We use a coal and wood stove for heat and added a water jacket to cut back on the electric hot water heater. Water temperature in the jacket is 100 degrees so the EHWH doesn't work as much. It also has a insulated jacket on it and is near the coal and wood stove.  I only wash clothes using warm or cold water, limiting myself to 2 loads in a month, use the crock pot and gas cooktop instead of the oven. I even started doing dishes by hand, using a soup pot filled with water instead of running a sink full of water. We have energy efficient appliances, none older than 5 years, including the EHWH. My last choice will be to keep the lights off 24/7 (fluorescent) and use oil or Alladin lamps and no TV.

They tell me my bill is lower than most in my area. I find that hard to believe, unless there are more than 2 people in their household and they have a regular furnace, use the dishwasher every day, etc., etc., but that comparison would not be equal.

Since the cap on our electric company comes off this month, I was told my bill will now be around $152 a month. Heck, I can't handle the $120, let alone the $152. I'm already a month behind. Asked about their budget plan - it will cost me $95 a month. That's more reasonable and probably the only way I can deal with this.

I would love to know how much other people pay for their electric. It will give me some idea if I AM getting a reasonable bill or if the electric company is giving me a line of bull. I would also like some suggestions as to what else I could do to lower the bill.

Thanks so much for suggestions.

My bills are on budget, year round - Knowing

We have both electric and gas here where I live. The gas is $66.00 right now and the electricity is $170.00 so am paying a total of $236.00 per month right now for those. It has been that way for several months. Most of my home is kept at 62 degrees. My workroom I have a space heater that basically stays on as long as I am in the room and here often quite frequently. We in the south are suffering with the frigid winter as well, single digits this morning and for us that is extremely low. Do you layer the clothing? This morning I had to take kitty to the groomer, brrr. I had on sweater under my blouse, long johns under my pants, heavier sweater on top and then my outer coat, socks. I am even layering in the house because I have no thyroid and am usually colder than most.

Family of 4 in a 6-year-old 2500 sq foot 2-story house in Atlanta suburb. We have gas heat, clothes dryer and hot water heater. Everything else is electric. Rates seem to go up for gas in the winter and up for electric in the summer. Electric is as high as $300 in summer and as low at $30 in the winter. Gas is as high as $190 in winter and as low at $25 in summer. We keep the house at 67 in the winter and 75 in the summer. We are conscious of power use but do not unplug most things. I think it really depends on where you live. My parents live in Tennessee on 100% electric, paying at least $250-300 per month year round.

when I first moved to my new home, suburb of Atlanta also, my electric bill was sky high. Not this lady. It went from around $350 that summer to about 20 the next month. I turned off everything I could, did not use the outside lighting. My home is 2 story about 2600 sq feet. What part of Tenn are the electric bills that high? Chatt used to be extremely low cost because of the dam there. Am 30 miles south of Atlanta, what section are you in? I could not, even having the same gas and electric companies, transfer my budget acct from Atlanta proper when I moved further south, had to be here a year before I could do that.

Wow! Mine is only 20-30 a month and gas is only 50-60 - XanaX

[ In Reply To ..]
Summer months, electricity is about 20 to 25. Winter months, 25 to 30. It's probably that electric water heater that's getting ya. They also say that your fridge is easily 25 percent of your electric bill. If it's nearly empty, fill it with gallons of water to help the fridge maintain it's cold temp.
And, unbelievably, here in Michigan, where the temp is currently below 20, my highest gas bill has been $59 in the last two years. On my final statement for gas last year, I spent a grand total of $396 for gas, which includes heating, water and cooking. I turn the heat off at night and off while I'm at home working (yes, the temp in the house is currently 52 -- typing under an electric blanket). I run the heat from 4 to 10 p.m. when my boy is home from school. I start to get crazy warm when it hits 62 degrees in here and have to turn it down. I hate going to my brother's house, where it's set at a tropical 74 -- yikes!
You need to have the company come out and find the source of your incredibly high bill. Good luck to ya...

My bill is usually between $50-60 year round. I heat with wood and gas and have a gas kitchen stove. In the summer, I hang clothes out to dry and do not own a dishwasher. I live in rural Ky.

Where we live, they have a thing called - power

[ In Reply To ..]
power STAT. It is a device that plugs into an outlet in your home. You can call a number and add money to it anytime you like. The device tells you what your balance is and how much you use everyday. If you run out, the power goes out. One quick phone call to add money and it's right back on, though we have never let it run out.

It's pretty cool because there is no monthly bill, you just add money to it when you need to. Very nice. I would say we average adding approximately $75.00 per month to it. We could opt to just be billed monthly, but we like it better this way. The lady at the power company told us that most people in our area use the power STAT and it actually ends up being a little cheaper than monthly service.

I have something very similar but called SmartPower. I love it!! - RoadRunnerMT

We typically run about $5 a day when not running the AC or furnace. Now with our cold air coming in, we are averaging about $12 a day running the darn furnace! The kiddos go back to school end of this week and I cannot wait because I can turn the furnace off while they are at school. I usually run about $150/mo on average for a family of 6 but this month will probably be double that.

I love it as well. - power

[ In Reply To ..]
We also average about $5 a day. We were averaging almost $12 a day and then we bought a new refrigerator. The drop in our daily usage was astounding!

I just love not having a bill every month and feeling like I am in control of our power costs instead of just leaving it up to the company to determine.

We have no gas in my home at all. It is just me and hubby in a small 1500 SF home. Electric bills range from $130-150 a month in the winter, $175-200 in the summer with central A/C. We have all new appliances, energy efficient lights. We don't use the dishwasher, as it drives our bill WAY up.

I found out I can choose who supplies my electricity, but working 2 jobs, I haven't had time. Some of you may want to check to see if your state lets you do the same.

Thanks for your replies to my question - Backwards Typist

I called to set up a budget plan. Now they want $125 a month. Sheesh! But I have to do it. I could go with one of the companies that are offering lower prices for a year, but if I don't like them, I'm stuck paying charges for opting out earlier than the contract.

One thing I didn't mention was that I didn't use the AC at all this summer and my bill never went below the $80. The year before I used it for 2 weeks and my bill never went up. Huh? Makes no sense.

We did have problem with our meter about 12 years ago. I got a bill of $0. That was nice, but thought I should report it because if they caught up with me, I'd be paying an estimated bill plus late charges and penalties. Glad I did. A neighbor didn't and when he got caught he had to pay over $1000 just in late charges and penalties (but don't know how long he tried to get away with it).

Thanks again, everyone, and keep warm.

With my budget plan, they settle up at the end - KT

of the year and you get a new payment amount. Mine actually went down $40 a month starting this month. Since my office is in the basement, I only run the air conditioning at night to cool the house down before bedtime when the kids aren't here and also turn the heat down during the day (my furnace and air conditioning unit is gas) and just use a space heater. Also, it really does make a difference if you shut off the computer(s) at night, don't leave them running all the time, and I also have started using the new light bulbs. Our electric company actually sent out free ones to all their customers.

electric bill - KYMT

I am also in rural Kentucky (south central part of the state). Our bill normally runs about $80 in the summer and $150-$175 in the winter. It's just me here most of the time; only two people in my household but hubby is a trucker and gone most of the time. I was able to cut the bill by about $45 this month by only drying jeans and towels in the dryer, and everything else on clothes racks.

It is less in the winter of course - sm - Laura E.

and higher in the summer. Our electric is about $125 a month now in the winter, and anywhere from $150 to $240 in the Summer with the AC on. We have a million things pluged in, 4 computers at all times, 4 TVs, etc, way too much stuff plugged in all the time though not necessarily turned on. It used to be higher in the winter but since we got the wood stove this year it is less, since the furnace is not running so much so that is an improvement. We kept the AC under better control this year and keep it at $180 at the highest this summer except for Sept and Oct. was quite high those two months at $242 and $205, but overall was $100 less for the year, so just need to accelerate our efforts for next year and see if we can knock off another $100 or more.

I got mine lowered by signing up for the low-income - discount. (EZ to qualify, as an MT!)

It's far worse if you look at the top 10% of that top 1%. Over the past 30 years ownership of our nation's means of production has become clustered in the hands of a few people, who have simply decided to pay us less and themselves more. Note that the wage gap has continued to grow dramatically since these data were gathered, which understate our crisis, which threatens the foundations of our nation itself. So, we're thinking about elections. What are we going to do about it? 3 ...
