article on buying primary care doctors

Posted: Jul 26, 2015

Here's an article about profiteers trying to buy doctor groups to

"get control of their patient base and leverage those patients."

I believe the model was transcription companies -- the idea was to round them up (Rodeer, anyone?) get control of the hospital accounts and leverage the MTs into accepting less and less.  It worked on the little women so why not expand to credentialed men?

Doctors are becoming govt agents. They have to spend more time - on billing codes than your personal

care.

Government destroys everything it touches. Doctors hate Obamacare. They know their nurses will be replaced with cheap physicians assistants. Right off the bad they had to spend $10 thousand for software required by the law that doesn’t work. I’m sure legions of old doctors can’t wait to retire. My condolences to the young doctors who have a lifetime of government tyranny ahead just so they can practice their trade.

The major change occurring is that treatments that the government thought were too expensive are going from partial coverage to no coverage, and even to the point of not being allowed under certain plans. Treatments are, indeed, going to be Medicare/Obamacare pre-approved or they won't happen. But then, less payments mean less equipment, supplies, and qualified personnel so soon, it won't be a problem anymore. Can't demand something that is no longer available.

No, they do not. - Coder

No, they do not "have to spend more time on billing codes than your personal care." That statement is not based in fact. Which is why this thread was moved to the politics board.

Yes, that statement is based in fact. My BIL is a doctor - and often talks about his frustration

Yeah, the red tape is aggravating, but we are qualified to handle it. Nurses, medical assistants, secretaries, receptionists, and even medical billers are not.

I think doctors have always not wanted to do - paperwork or other stuff
[ In Reply To ..]
And who can really blame them?

Ever since the health system in this country became focused not on health care but on insurance company reimbursement, that's what has necessitated all the paperwork.

Getting one record for each patient is a good thing, so drug seekers and others who commit fraud cannot abuse the system (as much anyway, those such as Rick Scott and Mitt Romney will still find a way to defraud the system legally but immorally), but I also think doctors can afford to have a decent system set up and then it becomes much easier for them to use the system so there are not too many middle men involved.

I guess we are some of the middle men though, so, the observation does not feel so great, but just trying to point out that there are always a lot of bureaucratic road blocks, so not really buying that Obamacare's regulations are any worse or better than what was required in the past.

Nurses replaced by cheap physician assistants? Do you even know what a PA is? A PA has an advanced degree on top of a bachelors. A nurse may only have the bachelors, and it is the docs choice who they hire, not the governments'. My client has been using an EMR for at least 6 years, and it works for them. I go into it and transcribe the narrative portions that are not covered by point click/drop down lists. They office manager does the coding as it is built into the EMR. The change from ICD-9 to ICD-10 is not going to be a problem for her, just a short learning curve; and the EMR provides support/help for that if needed. The government has mandated certain things be covered as a minimum in insurance policies and that you can't be turned down for pre-existing conditions. Initially, the insurance companies may have raised prices; but in the long run as patients get no cost/low cost care and health maintenance screening, a lot of chronic diseases may be eliminated or managed at a much lower cost than would have been the case if they just ignored their health and never saw doctors. Certain treatments, procedures, medications already have to be pre-approved, but this is the insurance company's doing, not the ACA; and pre-approval has been around for years. The practice I transcribe for is thriving and just moved to a much larger and better equipped suite of offices. The doctors are on the younger side, and they do just fine with their EMR, as they are more computer saavy than a lot of the oldtimers. I'm not sure where your skewed notions are company from.

My mistake, I meant medical assistants. - Correction

"in the long run as patients get no cost/low cost care " - Truthhurts

[ In Reply To ..]
Is that why health insurance companies are asking for as much as a 38%-58% increase in their rates? Because patients are getting no cost/low cost care?

Tell me another one. These insurance companies can't survive with all the illnesses/health screenings they have to cover but then again, isn't this what Obama wanted? To destroy the insurance companies so everyone would have to be on Medicaid or Medicare?

Amen! Will good doctors be there when you need them? - Cost/benefit analysis,

[ In Reply To ..]
Obamacare (taxpayer money) inflicted on this country (for illegals as well) will bankrupt this country.

Many of the top notch doctors will be going the route of concierge clinics and the rest of us will be seen by nurse practitioners and PAs. Many of the good docs can't afford malpractice insurance anymore. Physicians are now working for conglomerates (original OP).

My BIL is an oncologist who was a member of a specialty group and was responsible for purchasing all the chemotherapy drugs for his patients, most of whom were Medi-Gap and Medicare recipients. Unfortunately for him, the govt was not reimbursing him for the full costs of the drugs he had to administer (in the tens of thousands of dollars) to his patients and he was forced to drop out of the group and go on staff to the hospital he was working out of.

Why would anyone become a doctor now? It is inevitable that Obamacare will eventually decide doctors pay (those who take Obamacare, many are dropping out).

I read an article on virtual doctor visits about a month ago - claiming millions of people

[ In Reply To ..]
will be able to see a doctor on their smartphones or laptops for everyday complaints.

Why does "If you like you doctor, you can keep your doctor; if you like your healthcare plan, you can keep it" by Barack Obama on ACA/Obamacare keep coming to mind?

My healthcare system does virtual visits - xx

[ In Reply To ..]
The healthcare system I work for encompasses hospitals, a health plan, and provider clinics. We have instituted virtual doctor visits that are turning out to be quite successful and we have also instituted home health care visits. Unfortunately, because we still haven't gotten outside insurance providers to agree to it, right now it's only available to members of our health plan. It's a start, though, and our CEO is one of the top healthcare CEO's in the country. I have faith that he will convince other insurers that this is a good thing.

Nurses vs physician assistants - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
In addition to other inaccuracies in your post, you state that "They know their nurses will be replaced with cheap physicians assistants." I think you need to educate yourself. Physician assistants actually require more training and have more responsibilities than nurses and make more money than nurses. Maybe you meant nursing assistants.

Sorry - didn't see Old Anon's post above clarifying this before I posted. - nm

Doctors Trying To Talk Down To Me, Really?Mar 19, 2013
