Any other Arias trial followers?

Posted: May 2, 2013

So, besides "I'm a mom again!" from the gardening/bird thread below and myself, has anyone else been following the State of Arizona versus Jodi Arias trial?  If so, I'd love to hear everyone else's thoughts now that the trial is wrapping up with closing arguments.

;

My daughter is hooked on it - cant leave the darn tv

She thinks she will walk away like C. Anthony did, but believes she should rot in a 4 x 6 cell the rest of her life.

It's extremely addictive, to be sure - Trial Watcher

I get to catch a couple of hours in the morning and then DVR it and the following HLN shows to catch the highlights. It's into its 4th month and, at this point, I'm starting to think it even makes the OJ trial pale by comparison. Crazy, to say the least.

State's Closing - I'm a mom again!

Just looked at the photos they "can't" show you on TV, and it brings a new perspective to the killing. I thought Juan Martinez was wonderful today. I was sick to my stomach at the smirks and grins from Jodi and Jennifer Willmont. You would think Jodi would be at the point where she would start to take this seriously. My heart breaks for Travis' family and friends. Congrats to the wonderful crew at HLN. They are the best!
The photos are horrific - Trial Watcher

I had seen them quite awhile ago courtesy of a forum that had somehow managed to get very advanced copies and...yeah, hard to believe one relatively small woman could inflict all of that horrific damage to another human being, especially one she had professed to love. I'd hate to see what she'd be capable of doing to someone she didn't love. Ugh.

My shift is now over and the hubby and I are having tacos and catching up on the day's courtroom activities. He asked me today what we were going to do once the trial was over, lol! We've incorporated it into our daily routine so I think we're both going to suffer withdrawal!
You will have withdrawal, know for a fact - Mae

I remember years ago when the OJ trial was going on to be able to watch the trial from my time zone I went to work at 5 in the morning and was right in front of the TV when it would start. Later on in the evening you would have your recaps on CNN and the like. I virtually was so engrossed that when it was over I did have withdrawal and missed the everyday high of watching. I remember being captivated also by some other things, i.e. Katrina coverage, 9/11 and Diana's death. Every channel seemed to cover endlessly and I would just be saturated to the gills when they were over. Even though I knew this would be engaging, just could not need more peace of mind now.
A promise to myself - I'm a mom again!

I told myself I won't get involved in another high profile trial, but I said that after the disappointing verdict for Casey Anthony. Once you get invested in it, you feel you have to see it through, hoping for justic for the victim, family and friends. I don't know how I will make it through Kirk Nurmi's closing statement. I feel like I have to slap him on the back to get him going. They have a very difficult job ahead of them after what Juan Martinez did yesterday. I was actually in tears at the end of his statement. He had the respect for the family to speak softly, and his ending statement to the jury pleading with them not to have the stench of gasoline on their hands brought me to tears.
I wholeheartedly agree - with what you say

tears here too, and chills at reading this statement of yours. Travis deserved so much better in life. Hopefully he has found it in death! Hopefully she will find what she deserves too.

Arias versus Anthony - sm

I haven't kept close tabs on Arias or the charges, but with Anthony, she walked because the charge was higher than what they had evidence to prove. Had they charged her with a lesser offense, she'd be incarcerated imo.

But what I see of Arias, looks like they are just fighting to keep her off death row.

I think she has serious mental issues myself, but not to the extent of using it as a defense.

They're not using mental issues as the defense - They're saying it was self-defense

I'm surprised they're going with self defense as opposed to a mental issue. Stabbing someone over and over and then shooting them in the head shows a lot of rage, personally.

What I don't really get, I haven't been watching too much (still jaded about the Anthony fiasco), is that she admitted she killed him, so why the trial? Why not just cut a deal?
because it is a death penalty case - and that is why the trial
[ In Reply To ..]
She always figured "no jury would ever convict me...mark my words, no jury will ever convict me" and she also figured if she pleaded self defense and was acquitted on that, even with a confession, she would get "time served" and be allowed to go free. If she "pled a deal" she would still do time in prison, and she does not want that. We shall see what happens now. I am hoping, as well, that this is not going to be another "Anthony trial outcome," but you just never know what the jury is going to do. I don't think she will get the death penalty, but perhaps, life in prison. She does not deserve to "get off" scott free. She did the deed, she needs to pay the consequences somehow. He didn't deserve what he got either, even IF you do believe her lies!
She did try to cut a deal a couple of years ago - But the DA refused it
[ In Reply To ..]
It's available somewhere on the internet and makes for very interesting reading. She wanted to plea deal for 2nd degree. What makes the document interesting is it outlines that she will give information if it went to court about the victim, would sully his image (paraphrased), and could possibly even destroy marriages with her testimony.

I'm not positive, but I think this attempt at a plea deal may have been done when Jodi was briefly representing herself.

As a note to the above, yes, Nurmi *did* try getting out of representing Jodi and claimed financial hardship (kind of like people trying to get out of jury duty by claiming financial hardship), but the State refused to let him out of it and instead compensated him with additional funds. I don't believe ANY court-appointed attorney wanted to touch this with a 10-foot pole. I can't say that I blame them, either. What a mess of a case and what a piece of work for a client. Ugh.
Well, plea deal attempt or not, - she did really try to
[ In Reply To ..]
"sully his image", and attempted to destroy marriages by saying he was having an affair with a married woman, which was not true at all. None of her attempted statements to "get herself off" were true, in my opinion. She was made out as a liar all the way through and through, and I think that will be her eventual downfall. Even though the justice system does not work in all cases, you don't just get to walk away from killing someone if you make them out to be a "bad person". There was no "abuse" in this case, except maybe on her part towards him with her stalking and obsessiveness. I feel so badly for him and his family to have to have listened to all of these insane lies. She obviously thought the jury would believe all she had to say, and was so arrogant about it during her testimony. In the last days of the closing arguments though, I think she is beginning to see her fate and now is frightened. I hope she sleeps well this weekend!

Yep! I've been following the trial. Attorney Martinez is fierce! He has done an excellent job. She in my opinion is guilty!

wish I had time to hear the defense - closing statements today

but I am sure I will get caught up on HLN after the fact. I am not really sure how I feel about the death penalty. every case is different in the degree of injury caused, etc, but in this case....well, I think it is warranted. If left to her own devices, she will do it again, if she gets away with it this time. Her arrogance with "no jury will ever convict me" just rankles me. I feel so badly for Travis' family in having to go through this aftermath. She may be mentally ill in some respects, but that does not give her the right to take another's life. Hoping for a good outcome!

I am amazed at people who make bad decisions and lie.   Why not bite the bullet, admit your mistake and pay for it.  Sad that people who have been given so much would allow themselves to get caught up ugliness, take another person's life and ruin their own. Aggravated that they would lie to stay out of prison when that is exactly where they belong and neither show any remorse for what they have done.  ...

Casey Anthony TrialMay 30, 2011
They did a whole day of going over the trial and testimony on HLN today.  Just wondered if anyone here buys the defense story that the child drowned in the pool but because Casey was sexually abused by her father she showed no emotion and did not report it. Casey Anthony Trial SurveyJun 06, 2011
Following this trial and listening to commentary there is very little doubt it seems that Casey Anthony murdered her child and disposed of the body. I think a lot of the bias is because she is a pathologic liar.  Aside from the lying can anyone take a leap and think she may not be guilty of murder or that the state is not proving it beyond a reasonable doubt? Does anyone believe she was molested by her father/brother which caused her psychopathic lying? I heard Geraldo Rivera comment ...
