Let the games begin!  The former VP candidate and poster boy for the Democratic party (whew-that was a close one, huh?) finally gets his day in court.

Jury Selection Under Way in John Edwards Trial

After years of investigation, denials and delays, jury selection began Thursday for the criminal trial of former presidential candidate John Edwards.

Edwards sat at the defense table as about 100 potential jurors filed into a Greensboro, N.C., courtroom. U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Eagles then asked Edwards to stand and face them. He smiled and nodded as the judge introduced him.

Edwards, who served a single term in the U.S. Senate, faces six criminal counts related to nearly $1 million in secret payments made by two campaign donors to help hide the married Democrat's pregnant mistress as he sought the White House in 2008.

"This is not a case about whether Mr. Edwards was a good husband or politician," the judge said from the bench. "It's about whether he violated campaign finance laws."

Eagles emphasized the potential jurors' important role in the upcoming trial and ordered them not to tell anyone, even their families, that they had been called for the Edwards case. She also advised them to put out of their minds any media coverage they had seen and to ignore any legal dramas they might have seen on television, because such shows may mischaracterize the law or how a courtroom operates.

"You can watch Law & Order, Judge Judy, John Grisham; put it out of your mind," Eagles said. "I will tell you what the law is."

The jurors were then ushered to other parts of the courthouse to fill out lengthy written questionnaires. Their answers will be used to begin the selection process. A second batch of jurors is scheduled to come in the afternoon to follow the same process.

By next week, the large jury pool is to be winnowed down to 12 jurors and at least four alternate jurors expected to attend each day of the proceedings. Opening arguments are scheduled to begin April 22.

The trial is expected to last six weeks, though the judge warned it could go even longer.

"There are many ways that on TV justice is not realistic," she said. "One of those is that trials occur in an hour."

The money at issue in the case flowed to Andrew Young, a former campaign aide who initially claimed the baby was his. Young is expected to be a key witness for the prosecution. The mistress, Rielle Hunter, may testify as part of Edwards' defense.

Following years of adamant public denials, Edwards acknowledged paternity of Hunter's daughter in 2010.

A key question will be whether Edwards knew about the payments made on his behalf by his national campaign finance chairman, the late Texas lawyer Fred Baron, and campaign donor Rachel "Bunny" Mellon, an heiress and socialite who is now 101 years old. Both had already given Edwards' campaign the maximum $2,300 individual contribution allowed by federal law.

Edwards denies having known about the money, which paid for private jets, luxury hotels and Hunter's medical care. Prosecutors will seek to prove he sought and directed the payments to cover up his affair, protect his public image as a "family man" and keep his presidential hopes viable.

If convicted, Edwards faces a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and as much as $1.5 million in fines.

Everyone knew he did not have the class to be VP or President. Just like everyone knows Romney should never be president, and how everyone knew Palin had no business being at that level.

They could have their own reality TV shows, but it should only be on the entertainment channels or cartoon channels.

I never paid much attention to this and probably won't now... - Zville MT

only because I think he's a pathetic excuse for a human being. I know it's not illegal to be a sleazy, cheating, lying man, but I hope they find that he did do something illegal because as far as I'm concerned, he deserves every bad thing that can come his way.

That said, I feel horrible for his children - I can't even imagine how it would feel to know your own father did those things to them and their mother. I hope they have some really good family that can help them get through this - they're going to have to be really strong. Hopefully they got the hutzpah thier mother had!

I really don’t know anyone - in the Democratic party

who thinks of John Edwards as their poster boy. I am as liberal and progressive as they come. I cannot speak for the entire party like you seem to think you can, but IMO if Edwards is convicted of felony campaign finance violations, I hope he spends whatever time the court deems appropriate behind bars. If he knew what those donor’s funds were being used for, it means he has brought shame to his family, himself, and the party. It also means he has betrayed those NC voters who sent him to DC to represent their state, Senator Kerry who honored him by selecting him as his VP running mate in 2004 and those voters who supported him in his bid for the presidency in 2008.

What I do not want to see is a rerun of the Tom Delay spectacle, former House Majority Leader from 2003 to 2005, who had to resign to fight money laundering and conspiracy charges brought against him in October that year. He was ultimately convicted and sentenced to three years in prison and 10 years probation on January 10, 2011. He spent more than 5 years out of a puny $10,000 bond postponing and delaying (no pun intended) the inevitable. Despite his convictions and sentencing, Delay is now out on bail and continues to deny his guilt and running through the appeals processes. HE HAS YET TO SERVE A SINGLE DAY IN PRISON but while out on bail, he did manage to grab another 15 minutes of fame on DWTS back in 2009.

Though he had no salacious sex scandal notch on his belt, make no mistake. Delay was rotton to the core and had quite an impressive corruption wrap sheet. In an effort to illustrate my point that, when it comes to campaign finance crime, the GOP is not exactly a band of angels, I think a peek at his wrap sheet is in order:

1. Four admonishments from the House Ethics Committee: Trying to threaten a trade group into hiring a GOP president, Westar Energy special access favors in exchange for corporate donations to one of many of his front organizations, abuse of power during the 2004 Texas redistricting battle, and an endorsement swap for votes scheme during the Medicare Bill deliberations that same year.
2. Plans to misuse a Children’s charity’s IRS tax-exempt status to circumvent the ban on raising soft money.
3. Santorum and Norquist K Street co-conspirator and lobbyist pimp extraordinaire.
4. Norwegian Dawn crise ship special access for large corporate donors.
5. Accepting illegal contributions to his legal defense fund from lobbyists.
6. Accepting bribes from Russian oil executives in exchange for his vote to support an IMF bailout of the Russian economy.
7. $500,000 payments to his wife and daughter from his PAC and campaign funds, repesented as “fees, campaign management and payroll.”
8. Accepting illegal gifts from Jack Abramoff for foreign travel, lodging and golf excursions in exchange for votes.
9. South Korean trip financed by foreign agents in violation of House Ethics rules.
10. More abuse of power. Changing House Ethics violations investigation and legal procedural rules to cover his backside.
11. He had the gall to try to change House Ethics rules to allow committee members UNDER INDICTMENT to keep their seats on the committee and relaxing rules of conduct requiring preservation of committee “credibility!”
Purging democrats from the Ethics Committee with threats of retribution:.
12. More abuse of power. Replacing members of the committee who voted against him.
13. Firing other members by puppet proxies.
14. Making unfounded libelous allegations to intimidate his accusers.
15. Threats of committee disciplinary actions against his critics.
16. Obstruction of justice: Introduced a bill allowing HIS appointees to bar HIS prosecution by Texas DA Ronnie Earle.
17. Collusion.
18. Stall tactics.

So Goldie, wouldn’t you agree that Tom Delay brought shame and disgrace to the himself, his family, the GOP and all the voters who supported him over the years of his political career just like John Edwards (assuming, of coure, the court finds him guilty)???

Save us all (most of us that see through the BS on this) from the feigned self-righteous, moral indignation towards the OP. When the thread was about Ted Kennedy a few months back killing a woman, not reporting it and then being "cleared", libs crawled out of the woodwork so fast there were wood chips flying. Yet, not 1 on here spoke up for Kennedy's murder victim, except for the repubs/conserves. Pretty easy to see if this was a repub going through this you would have foam dripping from your chops, waiting to throw the switch or give the injection. So save the self-serving novella; we've heard it all before.

Cant deflect the attention away from the conservative poster who shows profound lack of empathy for the innocents involved in this miserable situation. So much pain for the wife and children. Trying to compare with others does not work. boils down to absolute proof that some conservatives do not care about issues but rather using politics as a relief valve for dastardly unrecognized personality issues. Hiding in the crowd as they say.

You thought that was a gleeful post? Give me a break. Spare us the self-righteous lecture. Google the name "Sarah Palin" and you can see just how heartless and cruel the left can be. Oh, and you can also Google a couple more names to see the oh-so-sympathetic and compasionate left:

I was going to post that statement. To poster who made that statement - you said it now you own it. Just do some research on the phrase "Let the games begin" and learn what it actually means.

I'm done with your hateful and ugly comments and won't stoop down your gutter level of name-calling. I have much better things to do than even try to have a discussion with an angry "nm"

prank calling grieving parents? I think not. A moron knows what let the games begin means and it is absolutely inappropriate to use in a comment about the fate of some motherless children.
