Any ideas to make spare cash?

Posted: Apr 5, 2014

Love to know if other MTs are supplementing their income and how.  I am making less and less money doing MT work and need to earn some extra money from a long-term perspective.

I babysit and clean a house for cash. About once a month. My aunt crochets hats and mittens for babies/kids too. Find your passion and offer it to people. Someone will pay for it. :-)

What some people do - see msg

Some people sell their used clothes on E-bay, or pick stuff up cheap at garage sales and sell them on E-bay.

I know someone who has a talent for decorating cakes, particularly kid themes, and she decorates cakes for kid's parties and things. She just stays local around her neighborhood area.

So, think of a talent you might have and see if it's something you could "market." Like, if you are a good sewer/mender, you could take mending jobs/tailoring jobs on the side. If you can make jewelry, you can sell your products you make. Beads are expensive, but I betcha if you hit some flea markets or garage sales, you could pick up some cheap bracelets and take them apart to make your own bracelets (or whatever jewelry you might like to make).

You can also have garage sales of your own, but do check your local neighborhood rules regarding doing that.

Good luck to you. I got out of the MT biz, but I still like to think of ways to make money!

Those are good ideas. My town does a huge city wide rummage sale - every Mem Day weekend. $$$.

I'm actually participating this year and have tons of stuff to get rid of and hopefully make some cash out of the deal. Whatever doesn't sell after the weekend is getting donated. I have an empty house and cash in my pocket. It's a win-win.

Paper route? (sm) - Rose

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm going to try to do this by horseback once my horse is trained. That will at least cover his hay.

Paper routes - see msg pls

Having a paper route can actually be pretty darn good money for the amount of hours your work. True, the hours stink (like, you'd probably have to get up at 4 a.m.), but it's one of those things you can do before your start another job. It's only a couple of hours in the morning.

I'm also pretty sure they are ICs, so you would have to find out your costs and things.

My sister did it so that she didn't have to stick her kids in daycare. She did her route, then was home by the time the kids were up and had to get ready for school. Dad got them started with breakfast and went to work when she got home.

Comfort Keepers - sm

I got a part-time job doing in-home nonhealth care for a company called Comfort Keepers. The girl who interviewed me said I was the second MT she had hired this week.

mom in the last months that she was able to stay in her own home. They alternated between all day/all night, because she needed 24-hour care. They were so sweet! Even after my mom passed, when we had a family reunion afterwards, we invited them because my sisters and I now consider them honorary sisters. My youngest sister, the one who did most of the organizing of Mom's care, and who hired the Comfort Keepers caregivers, still keeps in touch with them and invites them to social events. So we had a very good experience with them! :)

Well, the obvious - babysitting, petsitting, and - selling un-needed stuff. - SM

If you're handy with a sewing machine or a needle and thread, you could take plain pieces of clothing (either used or new) and "re-fab" them... make them better... with decoration, embroidery, studs, hand-painting, ruffles, layers, etc.

Cozy, washable pet-blankets are something you could make.. I know I can never have enough of them, because my kitties turn their noses up at anything but a fresh, clean blanket for their beds.

Any craft you are good at, if you can come up with something unique and totally different than what other people make, should sell well. Same goes with cooking. At a park I go to, there's a girl who always wears a cute, brightly-colored, homemade outfit (different each week), and she sells delicious homemade hot meat-pie-type sandwich/burrito things. I don't know what they are, but she walks into the park on a Sat. or Sun. with her insulated basket of burrito-things, which she sells for about $4-5 each, and comes back later with an empty basket. There's also a pie-person on some street corner in the city every Friday. (I'm fairly certain these people have to have food-selling permits, but obviously they're getting well-known and business is good.)

If you can write, or illustrate, or are a talented photographer, you could always self-publish books/calendars/posters and sell them online.

I went through a temp agency - abc

[ In Reply To ..]
I was bluntly honest with the woman there and told her I was not a people person, don't like to talk on the phone, and I basically want to be put in a corner and just do my work. She found me a job THAT DAY! I have been working in a licensing department for the past week and 2 days. I don't know anything about licensing but they're okay with that. I'm on the computer the whole day and I love it! Most of these jobs turn into a permanent hiring situation and I'm pretty sure I'll be sticking around. I got my first check for 2 days (8 hours) and it was $130! I'm lucky if my MModal 50-hour per pay period is $400!

The temp agency and comfort keepers are good ideas - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
There are a lot of agencies out there like comfort keepers just in case there isn't one where you live. Some places call them personal assistants. You can try googling 'home health aid' or something to that effect for your area.

I have a friend who had her own clients & works for her self, she has like 3 and makes pretty good money. She's been doing it for years and you don't have to be a CNA either.

Also a girl I use to work with made good money cleaning houses. Putting an ad in the paper is a good way to get clients if your interested in cleaning houses.

CEO Pay Drops But Cash Is KingAug 17, 2010
This is a very long article. I only posted a little of it. You'll have to follow the link for the rest. Here's a bit of good news for the Washington finger-waggers who think executive compensation has gotten out of hand: A survey of 81 big companies shows that CEO pay dropped by 8.6 percent last year. Now for the worrisome twist: The cash portion of their compensation rose 8.3 percent. That's a sign that companies are de-emphasizing long-term incentives for their top guys, a par ...

For Cash Of Titans Interesting FactsJan 13, 2012
Just saw the list you posted thurs of wealthiest politicians. I have no quarrel with the opinion that some politicians enrich themselves in office.  My concern is with the SuperPACs being unleashed in this election.  SuperPACs are making ads that are influencing elections.  Newt was doing well until Mitt's SuperPAC spent millions on ads. His popularity then dropped rapidly.  The SuperPACs are backed by big money whose goal is to get what THEY want, not what is good ...

The Treasury is set to run out of cash in October, which may lead to a default on debt obligations or payment delays for government programs, according to a report from the Congressional Budget Office. Obama Kept Military Out Of The Loop On Cash Payments To Iran. Sep 23, 2016
military officials to weigh in on his administration's decision in January to send $400 million in cash to Iran. After all, Iran is the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism, and terrorists prefer cash to wire payments because it's so difficult to track.
