When is the last time you had a WHITE CHRISTMAS?

Posted: Dec 18, 2009

We have been warned that we will be getting 1 foot of snow here in southwest Virginia this weekend.  I wouldn't mind except we always lose our power.  They also said to expect snow on Christmas Eve next week.  Yippeee!  I have not had a white Christmas in a long time!!!

Every year, and a lot of times too much. I live in the snow capital of NYS. We usually have feet and feet of snow. So far we haven't had much and that's fine with me. I say it every year, I don't know why I live here. I hate snow!

Ah! Chataqua Co., NY. Love the place in the SUMMER! - Backwards Typist

We had to go there for a funeral one November and woke up the next morning with a sleet/snow storm. No way could we stay extra long 'cause they were calling for another foot of snow of later in the day.

Instead of taking 6 hours to get home, it took us 6 hours just on the Southern Tier Highway.Thank goodness we had a front wheel drive diesel car, older that still had some metal in the body.

It took 2 days for my hand (that held onto the thingie on the door that you use to close it) to open and close without pain. Thought I'd forever have a claw hand. LOL

Where are you from in NY? - sm

I'm from Western NY, south of Buffalo. We had about 2 feet of snow about 1-1/2 weeks ago, but now most of it is gone.

Upstate NY - LinK

I live in Upstate NY just outside of Syracuse. We're on the lake so we always get lake effect snow. Right now we just have about an inch or two. Yep, Buffalo gets at lot of snow.

Never I think, in PA, MD or now VA - Laura E.

I am in SE VA, near Richmond. We are just outside the dump belt of snow in King William County from what I can tell, usually the west side gets nailed while the east not so much because they have the mountains over there. But they are still calling for 6-10 inches of snow and sleet here, ought to be intesting, going out later to get 3 things I forgot at the store this morning and gas for the generator just in case. We rarely lose power here but would like to be prepared. DH is home today and about to start gathering wood for the wood stove (first winter using one, we love it!) to put on the front porch. So it certainly looks like it might be white this year which is unusual for this area, our winters here are pretty snowless and fairly mild, only one month of super coldness usually. Guess we will both find out!

actually that is 6-20 inches of snow - nm - Laura E.

Woo hoo, it is snowing now....started about 5pm - sm - Laura E.

Got the SUV tarped and ready to go if necessary, usually don't go out unless we have too though don't have any trouble driving in it since I lived in PA until I was almost 30, got plenty of experience driving in snow, sleet, ice and muck up there. But a lot of the people here in VA totally panic when they hear the word snow. Kids are thrilled and looking outside every 5 minutes, coming down quite steady, icy snow, sounds beautiful, so quiet out there. Love it!

White Christmas in PA - Stella-JRG

I lost track of time, but maybe 5 or 6 years ago we actually had a white Christmas when it snowed on the 25th...actually dumped on us to the point where we were worried about traveling.

Here in the south, heard we might have White Christmas - So happy!

[ In Reply To ..]
Living in the south we very seldom have the white stuff but really cold and rainy today and hearing might have some for Christmas Day. That would be great for us, but just that day alone would be okay.

If this snow doesn't melt, we'll have a white Christmas this year. - Let it snow in Philly!

It started snowing around daybreak today and it's still going strong. We might get about a foot out of this storm. It it doesn't melt, we'll have some white on the ground this year.

54 White House Christmas TreesDec 04, 2012
Are we still allowed to call them Christmas trees? "This year's total is nearly 50 per cent more than last year's 37, which included seven artificial ones. In truth, the number of trees varies from year-to-year. In 1997 there were 36 trees, while in 2008, there were a scant 27." So.....What's On Your Christmas Table? SmDec 12, 2011
Or your Hanukkah table or however you choose to celebrate the season?  I'm not here to split hairs on what we call it.  I just thought it would be interesting to share some of our favorite foods of the season....maybe a recipe or two. Texas Pecan Cake (courtesy of my mom) makes a regular appearance on our table.  We don't like fruitcake in our house, but this is the Texas version, chock full of pecans and raisins.  Peanut Butter Balls, also known as Buckeyes, are ...

The Christmas FruitcakeDec 08, 2011
I say there are two kinds of people in this world, those who like fruitcake and those who don't; my son tells me I am wrong, there are three kinds of people in this world, those who are good at math and those who are not. I like fruitcake, I admit it, I'm not ashamed to say so -- so last night I bought a little itty-bitty $3.99 fruitcake to celebrate the 12 days of Christmas with a cup of herbal tea and a small slice after I finish work.  My son, on the other hand, says "Ug ...

Christmas ServiceDec 25, 2013
I just wanted to share this with everyone as I think it is so awesome. My church had a Christmas Eve service last night. We sang carols, the old ones. Now my church is small and our choir during the year has at best 20 members. A lot of people came in for the holidays to spend with their families and some of them joined our choir for the service which raised it up to about 30 members, more or less. Well the main hymn, anthem or whatever was the Halleuia (?) chorus from Handel's messiah ...

Baking Christmas Gifts...Oct 19, 2009
At my husband's family get together last weekend, I realized that my husband's family is just too huge to keep buying individual Christmas presents (15 adults and 5 kids, not counting his dad and my parents) plus our 3 kids so I've decided to get nice containers like a hatbox and fill it with baked goods, spiced pecans and jar mixes for each family. So my questions are: What jar mixes do you like to give/receive? What baked goods do you like to give/receive? TIA ...

Christmas Gatherings, How Would You Feel?Dec 16, 2009
Every year since my 2000 wedding have spent Christmas Day with hubs family (have daughter by another marriage, grown and out of the home). My SIL (hubby's brother's wife) and I have exchanged the dinners since the other participants really too old (70s and 80s) to host everyone, quite an ordeal to arrange for say about 15 people. I hosted dinner in 2007 and asked last year by SIL to host again and she would do this year. Have heard nothing about dinner until yesterday (10 days prior to ...

Least Favorite Christmas Music?Dec 02, 2011
I have to admit I can't stand the "Christmas Shoes" song.  I have a high tolerance for schmalz, but that's over the top for me.  I change the radio station when that comes on.    I'm sorta on the fence about "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas".  It's kind of cute, but it has the disadvantage of sticking in my head and I end up singing it the rest of the day! Anyone else? ...
