I am Catholic and other faiths such as Lutheran, Espiscopal, and perhaps others go by weekly Gospel readings throughout the church year A, B, C that lead up to certain points and holy days, etc. Last week's gospel always disturbs me and though our priest is usually pretty good at revealing the true message that Jesus is trying to get across, he did not do well for me to really understand this. So, I got on Google and began to read and finally found from Harvest Ministries, what he was really telling us. Here is the Gospel I am referring to: If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.
I know that Jesus does not want us to hate anyone. In fact, he even tells us to love our enemies. So I knew this Gospel lesson had a deeper explanation. Here is what I found and it gave me peace when I read it.
In essence, we are to love Jesus so greatly that not only does it pale in comparison to the love we have for family, but so much so that the love we have for them actually would resemble hate when compared to the enormous love we have for Jesus.
That makes sense to me and that I can accept. I just thought I would post here in case anyone felt a bit bewildered after hearing that Gospel last week. I know that Jesus always taught in parables and occult and cryptic ways, so we have to really think and search for the true meaning. Some of his teachings were pretty easy to understand, while others, like the one above (at least for me) can be very disturbing and confusing, especially if taken literally.
Blessings to all this week and always! This board is my favorite place on MT Stars.
