Catholic school rejects child of lesbian parents

Posted: Mar 8, 2010

BOULDER, Colo. -- A preschooler is caught in the middle of a fight between religion and sexuality. Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School, in Boulder, has refused to readmit a preschooler because the child has two moms. Her parents are lesbians.

"God and Jesus would not allow discrimination in that way," said Joellen Raderstorf, one of about two dozen demonstrators who turned out at Sunday's church service.

Most of the protesters stood silently, across the street, holding signs. One read "God loves all people."

Some of them went inside during mass. The priest addressed the situation in his sermon.

"He feels like it's a calling to be strict with upholding the catholic principles," said Dave Ensign, president of the Board of Directors of Boulder Pride, a gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender organization.

"People who understand the Catholic teaching will understand why the decision was made," said Fabien Ardila, a member of the parish.

However, not everyone in the parish agreed with the decision.

"I just feel the Catholic church is a church that should be teaching acceptance and tolerance. I just don't think this is an example of that," Juli Aderman-Hagerty told 7NEWS as she was leaving mass. "Father Breslin said it right. We're all sinners. Why discriminate against this end of sinners?"

Church leaders declined to answer questions from 7NEWS.

However, the Archdiocese of Denver did issue this statement:

"To preserve the mission of our schools, and to respect the faith of wider Catholic community, we expect all families who enroll students to live in accord with Catholic teaching. Parents living in open discord with Catholic teaching in areas of faith and morals unfortunately choose by their actions to disqualify their children from enrollment."

Raderstorf said it seems there's a double standard.

"I don't think they interview to see what parents are divorced or what parents are using birth control or other things that are against the teaching of the Catholic Church," she said.

Protesters said they'd like to see the decision reversed in this case. At the very least, they're glad their voices are being heard.

"Perhaps the reaction is a wake up call that we're at a point in history that we can't do discrimination like this without negative repercussions," said Ensign.

I can't for the life of me figure out why they'd sent their kids to Catholic school in the - first place. NM

Exactly. - Wondering.

I'm all for living your life how you want to live it. Why, though, would you want to send your child to a school run by an organization that denounces your life choices and makes you out to be an evil person? Why would you subject your child to that? Surely, there are better education options out there that won't cause psychological trauma to your child.

The moms need a good talking to, imo.

Double Standard - Naturally

We're talking about organized religion here.

Keep your sins in the closet where they belong.

Why the Catholic bashing? - luvzminis

[ In Reply To ..]
I wish that people who bash the Church would do everyone a favor and research WHY the Church teaches as it does, and has done so since the time of Christ on earth. It would eliminate a lot of frankly ignorant comments and clear up a lot of confusion. I suggest anyone with questions contact the Catholic League, which can direct you to resources, or get a copy of the Cathchism, talk to a local priest and ask questions, etc. Really simple stuff, guys! You'll get it if you try.

So, they should practice what they preach! - ME

[ In Reply To ..]
Come on, nobody is picking on "the Church", but really it is simple...maybe if priests spent more time practicing what they preach, maybe people wouldn't be so down on the catholic church.

Here is a couple wanting to put their child in a catholic environment (god knows why?) and the church is saying their "sin" is to bad for the church to ignore. yet, the church can ignore the sins of child abuse that happen right inside its doors by the "men" who are supposed to be teaching others how to live, PLEASE!!

from you post: ""God and Jesus would not allow discrimination in that way," - omg

As far as far as I can remember to be homosexual or lesbian is SIN. Or have the 10 commandments been changed without informing me?

This was the right decision.

The sinners of today... - Mother Theresa

[ In Reply To ..]
expect the world to affirm their sins and accept them instead of condemning their sins. This has nothing to do with the child or her "parents" but with the sin they are committing and the churches commitment to reject sin. Sinners of today expect to be able to sin without remorse and have that sin accepted as normal/wholesome/good, etc. It doesn't work that way. We all sin but our goal should be to turn from sin, not continue in it. Jesus/God would undoubtedly want the church to "accept" these people and their child but would undoubtedly tell them to "Go and sin no more" and that's not what today's sinners expect.

haven't seen that commandment - Me

[ In Reply To ..]
what commandment says "though shalt not be gay"?? Must be a new one I didn't learn in Sunday school.

I guess sexually abusing children is okay though?

None of the commandments... - Mother Theresa

[ In Reply To ..]
tell us not to be homosexual just as none of the commandments tell us not to do drugs, molest children, have abortions, or prostitute our bodies but there are other parts of the Bible that tell us not to do these things. There is more to the Bible than just the 10 Commandments and if you actually read the 10 Commandments, they will include (in a round about way) that we are not to do the things I listed above. The Bible tells us to care for our temples (bodies), i.e., don't do drugs. The Bible tells us to have sex only in marriage, i.e., you wouldn't be "married" to a child. The Bible tells us not to kill, i.e., not even the baby in our womb. For prostitution, i.e., sex only in marriage. Maybe your Sunday School teacher didn't tell you the whole story and thought just maybe you might be interested in reading your Bible when you grew up. :)

was too busy molesting alter boys. The catholic church is way too full of themselves, and you are a piece of work, calling yourself "mother theresa", whatever
sm.... - Mother Theresa

Lots of people molest children. Catholics, Baptists, Methodists, Jehovah's Witness's, teachers, priests, accountants, babysitters, doctors, truckdrivers, cooks, waitresses and even parents and grandparents. You are quick to judge. There are also very good and kind Christian people in all of these categories. My name is Theresa and I happen to be a mother. So quick to judge....
judging - me
[ In Reply To ..]
Please, you didn't chose that screen name because you are a mother who happens to be named theresa, you chose it because you believe you are so "holier than thou."

As for others, we are talking about catholics here, which is the "church" I was raised in. It is the most hippocritical group I have ever had the displeasure to be a part of." Do as I say, not as I do. Like to preach the gospil, as long as they don't have to follow it.

You seem very bitter. So sorry about your past. I'm not affiliated with the Catholic church whatsoever. I'm SDA, and a mother who happens to have the first name of Theresa. I thought it was a catchy moniker. If it offends you, that is your problem. I sin like everyone else and have had my share of trauma in life. I just am not as bitter as you as I have God in my heart. I don't follow any church rules. I follow God's rules. You have a problem with people. You shouldn't do as people say but what God says. That's why he gave us the Bible.
Mother T - me
[ In Reply To ..]
I have a problem with the catholic church preaching their rules, but choosing not to follow them internally. That was what this post was about. You really don't have a clue what you are walking about, but I would expect that from an SVA, they make their own rules too, bible be damned.
I would have a problem with that... - Mother Theresa
[ In Reply To ..]
myself and, in fact, there are things our church teaches that I disagree with wholeheartedly because the Bible doesn't teach that very thing. I would have to agree with you in that respect but, rather than condemn all people in the church, I choose to follow God's path, especially if it veers from the church's teachings.
From a NYT survey of the last 60 years, only 2.5% of priests... - Anon
[ In Reply To ..]
were guilty and/or merely ACCUSED of molestation. And since we're going there, 85% of the victims were adolescent BOYS, which means the priests were homosexual and not pedophiles.

FYI, most homosexuals were molested when they were adolescents by older men, because that's how they recruit in the homosexual community. Do a little research before you run down the church you imply you used to belong to.

And by the way, check out the rates of molestation in Protestant churches and the public school system: It's 10%.
I agree...sm - nmmt
[ In Reply To ..]
abuse can happen anywhere and anyone is capable. To point the finger in one direction is ridiculous. I'm not even Catholic but I know all Catholics are notlike this and should not be judged simply because of the actions of some perverted homosexual priests. I heard on the news there was a teacher in our area who molested over 200 boys at a school for the deaf. I don't believe it was a Catholic school...not sure, but it was disgusting to say the least.
Wow, are you just full of bogus facts. Incredible ignorance. - NM
[ In Reply To ..]
A pedophile can be either homosexual or heterosexual, male or female, and the victims can be male or female. It's not a "homosexuals molest boys and heterosexuals molest girls" thing in quite the way you assert. Also, pedophilia has nothing to do with "recruiting" anyone into the homosexual community; that's just so ignorant I don't even know where to begin to tackle that one.

Wow. How 19th century.

So - me

[ In Reply To ..]
So, NOW the Catholic church choses to uphold its teachings?? What about all the sexual child abuse - that kind of sin is okay? Bunch of hipocrits.

A Question For ParentsSep 01, 2016

You must spend the time wisely. What one, or at most two, character trait(s) would, to you, be the mo ...
