Muslim Students sue Private Catholic U. for crosses

Posted: May 16, 2015

This is both somewhat religious but also political. I don't care for Hannity but this video shows how Muslims are trying to take over and push Christianity out of this country. They are suing in federal court to force the university to remove the crosses from the school rooms. Why do Christian schools and universities have to bow down to Muslims.

Muslim students are enrolled in a Catholic University. Why? To create trouble? I would say yes.

As usual, the independent muslim activist and former director of the Human Rights Department of the Muslim-American Society Freedom, ibrahim Ramey, is on the side of the Muslims tries to excuse their behavior.

I think these are 2 separate cases that Banzhaf has brought. The one article states that regarding the cross issue, there have been no Muslim student complaints. It seems Banzhaf is creating an issue and running with it.

As to whether Catholic University has to admit Muslims, probably. They are probably receiving federal funding which prohibits them from discriminating just on the basis of religion. They can, however, have a number of Catholic-based requirements to fulfill that might be impossible or uncomfortable for non-Catholics. For instance, mandatory mass attendance every day, Friday, whatever.

I suspect their admittance of Muslims is financial, as are most University decisions on enrollment.

This is from the Catholic University of America in D.C. website:

A Catholic Education
The Catholic University of America provides students with a rich, religious foundation on which to build their lives. We are proud of our mission as the national university of the Catholic Church and proud of our commitment to the spirit of inquiry and academic freedom.

Students of all faith backgrounds appreciate the values-based education CUA offers and are welcomed to our campus. Our religious foundation, one that will prepare you for success in all areas of your life, is our gift to you.

The Campus Ministry Office facilitates the spiritual development of all students, with dozens of retreats offered each school year. Additionally, students can benefit from service opportunities, immersion trips and volunteer experiences - all of which will enrich your university experience and allow for growth both inside the classroom and out.

So, if they welcome all faiths, I suppose they should offer a way for those faiths to pursue their faith.

His case might have a tiny bit of merit, but I do object to representing people who have not asked to be represented.

I am also disappointed that Fox News has falsely promoted this as such an inflammatory situation.

No, Catholic U is NOT under investigation for offending Muslim students…

Another day, another faux crisis.

by Steven D. Greydanus 05/12/2015

This is not happening.

…regardless what you may have read recently on Breitbart News, among many, many other right-wing sources.

[Update: See the letter I received from Catholic University below confirming my take on this story.]

"Catholic University investigated for offending Muslims by having too many crosses," reads the May 11, 2015 headline at Breitbart.

Judging from many comments at Breitbart and on social media, the popular impression many people seem to be taking away from the story is this: Pushy Muslim students at Catholic University in Washington, DC are professing themselves offended by the sight of Christian crosses. They're demanding that crosses be taken down and Muslim-friendly prayer spaces opened up.

Here’s a small sampling of the type of comments that are cropping up in response to this non-story, specifically on Breitbart but also all over the conservative blogosphere and social media:

Breaking News…Muslims offended what a shock

Muslims need to lighten up and stop being pansies.

Muslim whining offends me… So do their mosques, burqas and jibjabs. They need to be banned.

Everybody take a deep breath. Nothing is actually happening here.

The source of the confusion appears to be an undated article posted on BeliefNet — a story that dates back to 2011. (Undated news stories are the worst. Actually, as I recently noted, even dated news stories are often revived years later on social media by people who don’t bother to check dates, but you don’t generally get news outlets like Breitbart making that mistake.)

It’s important to note what the 2011 BeliefNet story says — and what it doesn’t say.

As even the Breitbart story admits, there seems to be no evidence that any Muslim students at Catholic University have complained about anything at all. (When I pointed this out in the combox at Breitbart, I was immediately called a "blithering moron," since Muslims always object to the cross. Don't confuse some people with facts!)

Instead, the sole source of grief was a professor — a non-Muslim professor who doesn’t even teach at Catholic University, or at any Catholic school. He’s a law professor at George Washington University, and he seems to be a general sore tooth, a guy who goes around making a nuisance of himself.

As far as I can tell, after a flurry of stories in 2011, nothing ever came of this. At least, I can’t find any evidence that the story ever made headlines again, or that Catholic University was ever asked to do anything as a result of the professor’s frivolous complaint. So this was pretty close to a non-story to begin with, and now it’s an old non-story.

Even as I write this, I know I’ll get impatient pushback from readers convinced that, even if this particular story isn’t true, the larger and more important point is that this kind of thing is happening all the time, and it’s much more important to warn people about what is happening than to keep talking about what isn’t happening.

I disagree.

It’s true that there are real problems in the world. Islamism is actually one of them.

But alarmism over misinformation, which spreads like a cancer over social media, is also a problem — a debilitating, destructive problem.

A confused, fearful movement serves the enemy. We bleed ourselves of energy, clarity and credibility by uncritically embracing anything that comes along that fits our favored narratives.

Outrage and anger spread faster on social media than any other emotion because they trigger a “Do something now!” knee-jerk response that bypasses our critical centers. Outrage and anger are effective because they bolster our commitment to our cause, intensify in-group solidarity and heighten opposition to the enemy.

But they also obstruct understanding and critical judgment. Alarmism riles people up, and that can be socially useful, but it also obscures the fact that there’s good news in the world as well as bad.

In this case, misinformed alarmism over this story obscures the more relevant fact that, as Rod Dreher pointed out at the time, Muslims are attending a Catholic university in our nation's capital — and they’re happy there.

They don’t feel oppressed by the university’s Catholic identity, and they aren’t out to impose Sharia on anyone.

Of course, that’s a portrait of Muslims in America that doesn’t serve the culture-war narrative. The other story is more useful, so that’s the one that gets exhumed going on four years later.

Update: Hours after posting, I received the following email confirming my take on this story.

Dear Mr. Greydanus,

Thank you for your blog post. You are correct that this story is from 2011, that nothing came of Mr. Banzhaf’s complaint, and that our Muslim students are happy — none of them supported the Banzhaf complaint and in fact they choose to attend the national university of the Catholic Church because they know that their faith and their expression thereof will be respected.

Breitbart Stupidly Spreads Fear After Falling For Outdated Article On Muslims At Catholic University - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Author: Rika Christensen May 15, 2015 8:55 pm

The ever-intelligent Breitbart is outraged that someone demanded crosses be removed from the classrooms inside Catholic University of America, on the basis that the crosses create a hostile environment for Muslim students. This sounds like something for which outrage would be legitimate; Catholic University is a Catholic university, and even a stopped clock is right twice a day (meaning, even conservatives can’t be wrong 100 percent of the time). Is there a possibility that Breitbart got something right?

Actually…no. Breitbart got this way wrong. Four days ago, they posted an article titled, “Catholic University Investigated for Offending Muslims By Having Too Many Crosses.” It goes into heavy detail about the complaint, which came from someone who isn’t Muslim and doesn’t work there. Professor John Banzhaf, from George Washington University (and the person who filed the complaint) is a well-known nuisance; someone who files complaints about anything and everything.

He complained that all the Catholic imagery at Catholic University creates a hostile environment for Muslim students. Muslim students also “find their souls crushed” when they have to make do with Catholic University’s Catholic facilities, because they don’t provide spaces for prayer “the way other universities do.” Fox News’ Todd Starnes got Banzhaf to admit that it probably wasn’t illegal for the university to act this way, but he said that they are acting “probably with malice” towards Muslim students.

Breitbart acknowledges that Banzhaf is a lunatic. It’s kind of hard not to if you know anything at all about the guy. However, Breitbart points to an undated article on BeliefNet as the source of this necessary fear-mongering, which said that the D.C. Office of Human Rights was looking into Banzhaf’s complaint. Beliefnet’s article is four years old, which is why this alarmism is unfounded.

Remainder of article at link below.

• I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.

This statement is a rewording of a passage from page 261 of The Audacity of Hope, in which Barack Obama spoke of the importance of not allowing inflamed public opinion to result in innocent members of immigrant groups being stripped of their rights, denied their due as American citizens, or placed into confinement, as was done with Japanese-Americans during World War II. The original contains no specific mention of "Muslims":

"In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

Facts are easily verifiable by merely checking the source you cite. Copying made up stuff over and over and over will not magically make it come true. It is truly pitiful that so many Americans are so easily fooled by the right-wing propaganda machine when all one has to do is open a book to find out that they've been lied to.

Republicans Pathetically Tried To Smear Obama Both Ways - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Yet another clip taken out of context where Republicans pathetically tried to smear Obama two ways. They suggested he spent 20 years in the Christian church of Reverend Wright and played clip after clip after clip of some very controversial video of Obama's Christian preacher saying some awful things and trying to smear Obama saying this Christian was Obama's spiritual mentor for decades. When that didn't work they accused him of being a Muslim with this clip. Heck, they believed BOTH, that Obama was a Christian American hating Muslim.

In September 2008, Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama was interviewed by George Stephanopoulos for ABC's This Week news program. When the subject of the interview turned to Senator Obama's assertion that Republicans were attempting to scare voters by suggesting he is not Christian, the following exchange occurred:

STEPHANOPOULOS: You mentioned your Christian faith. Yesterday, you took after the Republicans for suggesting you have Muslim connections. Just a few minutes ago, Rick Davis, John McCain's campaign manager, said they've never done that. This is a false and cynical attempt to play victim.

OBAMA: You know what, these guys love to throw a rock and hide their hands.

STEPHANOPOULOS: But the McCain campaign has never suggested you have Muslim connections.

OBAMA: No. No. No. But I don't think that when you look at what is being promulgated on Fox News, let's say, and Republican commentators who are closely allied to these folks...

STEPHANOPOULOS: But John McCain said that's wrong.

OBAMA: Listen, you and I both know that the minute that Governor Palin was forced to talk about her daughter, I immediately said that's off limits. And...

STEPHANOPOULOS: And John McCain said the same thing about questioning your faith.

OBAMA: And what was the first thing the McCain campaign went out and did? They said, look, these liberal blogs that support Obama are out there attacking Governor Palin. Let's not play games. What I was suggesting — you're absolutely right that John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith...

*****
That last sentence was a straightforward statement: Senator Obama was not proclaiming his "Muslim faith"; he was acknowledging that Republican nominee John McCain had not specifically promulgated the false rumor that he (Obama) was a Muslim.

Unfortunately, at this point of the interview, George Stephanopoulos — apparently not understanding the context of Senator Obama's response — mistakenly attempted to correct him by interjecting the words "Your Christian faith." This non sequitur briefly threw Senator Obama off track; he repeated the words "My Christian faith" and then returned to the point he was trying to make:
*****
OBAMA: What I was suggesting — you're absolutely right that John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith, and you're absolutely right that that has not come ...

STEPHANOPOULOS (interrupting): Your Christian faith.

OBAMA: My Christian faith — well, what I'm saying is...

STEPHANOPOULOS (interrupting): Connections, right.

OBAMA: ...that he hasn't suggested that I'm a Muslim, and I think that his campaign upper echelons haven't either. What I think is fair to say is that coming out of the Republican camp, there have been efforts to suggest that perhaps I'm not what who I say I am when it comes to my faith, something which I find deeply offensive, and that has been going on for a pretty long time.
*****

A very brief, out-of-context segment was then clipped from that exchange and sent winging around the Internet as proof that Senator Obama had "admitted his Muslim faith."

Sorry, Pubs, Obama's not a Muslim, but believe what you gullibly will. LOL. This gullibility of the conservative fringe is what I call the "cringe fringe factor."

I didn't leave the GOP; the cringeworthy fringe GOP left me.
