questions for parents with small children

Posted: Jun 20, 2011

Do you children (maybe around 4 years old) cry a lot?  We have a neighbor who has a little girl and she is always crying - and I mean always.  I don't think we've ever heard longer than a half hour without her crying.  She's playing with other kids and she cries, she's in the swimming pool and she's crying, eating crying, etc, etc.  Since I never had kids or friends who had kids I don't know if this is normal.

Just was curious.

Do you live in my neighborhood? - 2 of um like that here

I know girls are whiney, but not like this... these 2 girls cry all the darn time! Must be something in the growth hormones they are tainting our food with!

Could be lots of reasons - Eldo

Could be sleep deprived, could be a lot of family turmoil, may need better training, etc. Could be sinister reasons, too, but not always.

constant crying is not normal - sweetgirlsmom

I would just ask the girl. "Why are you crying?" She may be hungry, thirsty, needing a bathroom, in pain from medical problems, neglected, physically abused, mentally ill, emotionally disturbed, or bullied by other children.

The mother probably hears the crying, but is unable or unwilling to do anything. It is time for other adults to intervene. Once the mother knows other people are concerned, she may be more willing to get help for the child. Sometimes people lock their kids out of the house so they can drink or use drugs, or just have some peace and quiet on a hectic day. But the child is without supervision and other assistance. I would not let a child suffer like that.

I would find out from the girl what is wrong, talk to the mother, and insist they get whatever help is appropriate. If the child keeps crying or is hidden away, I would call Child Protective Services. They have the authority to get help for the child. If I was hesitant to talk to the mother, I would just call CPS. Some states will take an anomymous report and some will require your name. But none of them will tell the parents which neighbor called. I worked at a childrens treatment center and the social workers want to be informed. Children show disturbance when they are neglected or abused, and they are at risk for injury and/or death. This child could be in serious trouble and needing immediate help. You could save her life.

What is your overall impression of the family? Are there more kids? sm - ChiaPet

and how often do THEY cry? She could be the child who has learned that *negative attention is better than no attention at all*, and do it b/c she has found out that someone will truly pay attention when she cries. You know the parents who are self-absorbed, always on the phone, make comments in stores "I'm gonna smack you if you don't shut up", etc?? Those are the kids I see who tend to be really whiny - they are not self-reliant b/c even tho their parents are not necessarily neglectful, they are neglectful in the one-on-one attention that children truly need to become self-realized adults. JMHO of course... she could also have a sibling who is bullying her of course.

Thanks - see message

I was just curious because never having kids I just didn't know if this is normal behavior.

The parents are self absorbed with themselves. Mother is not married to the guy living there. We heard her talking on the phone once awhile back and she was telling someone she met him at a bar. He doesn't work so lives there and takes care of the girl.

There is no abuse whatsoever from the mother or guy so that's not something we are concerned about. She's just a whiny little girl. Maybe I was like that when I grew up cos now thinking about it my dad would always be yelling at me "knock it off" and my mom would yell "if you wanna cry I'll give you something to cry about". HA HA HA.

There is a bully boy that's always hitting her and pushing her down. The neighbors who were there before them (darn them for moving cos they were so nice) had the same problem with the same kid. Now he's at it with the girl. Oh yes, and he pees on their house when they are not there and takes the hose and squirts water in their windows. He's got a mouth that is worse than a sailor and every other word is the "f" word and now the girl is picking up on it, but they never say it when the parents are around. A few months ago I yelled over to him to watch his language, but it didn't do any good.

Anyway...we are going to move. I was just curious about the whiny brat. She's not hungry cos she's always eating something, so I'll be she just gets over tired.

Why dont you just ask the kid - what her problem is?

Tell her she is annoying the grownups and to shut up the incessant caterwauling.

Do Parents Hold Their Children Accountable For Their Bad BehaviorAug 16, 2015
or do they just continually blame everyone else's child instead?  I have a 15yo was sleeping over at a friend's house with two other girls.  They were at the grandma's house and the grandma let them pitch a tent out in the back yard (she lives in the country) and "camp out."  Problem is sometime in the middle night while the grandparents were asleep, after testing back and forth with an older boy (18 years old), he shows up picks all four girls up and ...

Need Advice From Parents With Children Riding Crotch RocketsNov 06, 2011
My son told and showed my hubby and myself last night that he had bought a motorcycle, crotch rocket no less.  I was devastated and cried so hard my eyes hurt.  You see my nephew was killed 2-1/2 years ago on a big Harley when a bucket tree truck took a sudden turn in front of him and he died instantly.  My sister and the whole family have been devastated by this.  It literally caused my sister to have to file for disability because of the mental anguish over this nightmare. ...

Cancer-stricken Children, Parents, Ejected From Park NearSep 21, 2015
The U.S. Secret Service ordered hundreds of parents and their cancer-stricken children out of Lafayette Square on Saturday night, barricading the park for at least two hours and disrupting the group’s plans for a candlelight vigil to raise awareness and research funding for childhood cancer, participants said. Some of the parents and children expressed hurt and disappointment that Secret Service and National Park Police, citing security precautions, virtually shut down part of a two-day ev ...

SIL ParentsFeb 10, 2011
My son in law and I have a pretty good relationship.  My daughter and her family spend a lot of time here, driving in to visit quite often.  The granddaughter is going to be turning 6 next month and they want to have her party here at my house. My SIL's parents called and said they would like to fly in and surprise him for the party, arrive a couple of days before to do some shopping and help getting the house ready.  They asked if they could stay here, and that's fine, ...

Some Parents Really T Me Off...Nov 13, 2010
There was a little boy on my son's soccer team whose parents (mom and the boyfriend of the week-I think there have been three in the 6 weeks he has been playing) are too lazy to get him to very many practices, so I offered to pick him up and bring him.  The newest boyfriend said that the reason that he has only been to one game is because it is too difficult for them to get up early enough to bring him to an 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. game.  Last week, I brought him home with me Friday nig ...

DVR QuestionsFeb 19, 2011
These are probably stupid questions but I don't know anyone who has a DVR so I thought I'd come here to ask about it. We are thinking of getting a DVR service so we can quit the VHS taping merry-go-round, etc. Before I sign up, though, I'd like to know something about it from someone who's not trying to sell it to me! I understand that basically you can put in the name of a show you want it to record, and any time that show is aired it will record. Is that correct? So ...

A Question For ParentsSep 01, 2016
There are so many lessons that we as parents want to teach our children, but I'd love to hear your answer to this question, based on a hypothetical scenario: You are the parent of a 7-year-old child. You've learned from your doctor that you have a terminal illness, with at most a year left to shape your child's future. There's no time for anything but the essentials. You must spend the time wisely. What one, or at most two, character trait(s) would, to you, be the mo ...

What Do You Think Of Kids Calling Their Parents By Their First NameJul 28, 2010
My BIL keeps referring to his mom (my MIL) by her first name.  He'll say "you know that Sharon moved the other day", or he'll say "I came home today so I could bring Sharon to the doctor".  The first time he said it I said whose Sharon?  He said you, know, my mom.  I said why don't you say "my mom" I know who you are talking about.  He told me that when he's talking to his coworkers they don't know who his mom is.   I'm sorry, I just ...

Small Improvements Apr 10, 2012
Small improvements Small improvements matter, because they can add up to big changes. The key is to keep making them, to continue improving on the improvements. Are you frustrated because you’re not as effective as you’d like to be? You can begin to change that right now, and put an end to ...

General Questions On FlexibilityApr 05, 2010
I have recently been inquiring about a new career in MT.  I learned of this website and have been reading feverishly to become as informed as possible.  My question is this (which is one, of many!):  Is it flexible enough to do on a basis around a first and primary job that requires travel.  On the days that I'm home (which could be for 2-5 days in a row before traveling again) I would have all day dedicated to sitting at the computer and getting work done.  This i ...

What Questions Would You Ask An Accountant Before Becoming A Client?May 10, 2011
I've had it with ours. We don't get full copies of our filings back and he never files until the very last day if we owe taxes. He e-files through some company. Yesterday, I received a letter from the IRS that WE DIDN'T FILE FOR 2009! We certainly did but we can't remember how much we had to pay the IRS, if any. We do have checks for local and state taxes paid last year, but not federal. All I get his answering machine when I called (twice). I don't want to call the IRS ...

I didn’t want the answers buried because the original post is pretty far down the page.   You don't HAVE to take the compensatory option. You volunteer for it. If you want your OT paid in cash the week you work it, then so be it.   You said: "One other thing I'm not finding or maybe it's there and I don't understand the legal jargon: Is the OT that is converted into PTO time and a half? I posted earflier about how my local cable TV/internet/telephone company started blocking TV channels unless you rent a "box" from them.  I lost my temper and broke my bundle.  I cancelled TV and phone, ordered Direct TV, moved my phone # to a tracfone, and left internet intact because it's fast and high quality. It turns out that Direct TV couldn't get a "line of sight" to their satellite and so couldn't install.  I called Dish Network, and they're supposed t ...
