What happened to Abby? Last week, she wasn't

Posted: Apr 12, 2011

feeling well. Both ears swelled up and couldn't be touched. She was very 'mopey' and felt warm to touch. I was going to call the vet on the third day, but she was back to normal.

Last night, when we sat down for supper (and I didn't see this at first), she started making noises like she was scratching herself but the sounds got worse and then she came from behind DH's chair and I saw that she was having trouble walking, like she was drunk. I immediately jumped up from my chair and put my arms around her and helped her to an open area. I could feel how tense she was and she was holding her one front leg in the "shake hands" mode. I could see she was very confused at what was happening to her. I kept talking to her and petting her in her favorite places until I got her to lay down and held her until she relaxed. This lasted for a couple minutes. I'm truly afraid it might have been a seizure.

After that episode, she was panting very heavily for a couple minutes, then got up, ran to DH wagging her tail, then to me, as if she hadn't seen us for a couple hours. She finally settled down a few minutes later. I'm calling the vet today. Hopefully, they will take her  immediately.  We live in an area with no emergency vet services at night.

As you can imagine, I didn't get much sleep last night because of this. Please tell me she didn't have a seizure....this never happened before. I'm scared for her and 8 a.m. can't come soon enough for me.

They thought the dog was having seizures (disoriented, confused, trouble walking/standing) and he was also having "spells" where it looked like he was seeing things that no one else could. It turned out he had an ear infection and the fluid was creating noise in his ears and he was looking around for the noise. It also created the "dizziness" and the trouble with standing and walking, much like a bad ear infection can create vertigo in humans. I hope it turns out well for Abby, you and your husband. Please keep us posted.

My dog had seizures after I gave her pills for fleas - nm

Her seizures were so bad that she appeared to be dead. I stood there holding her, yelling out to my son that she had died. He came in, held her a few minutes, and then she started moving again and was fine. She lived a very, very long life after that and never had another seizure.

When I was young, my parents had the cutest little pug dog puppy and one day she had an episode very similar to the one you described. They took her to the vet, who ran tests. It turned out the puppy had severe hypoglycemia and would go into seizures with it.

The solution was simple...All they had to do was give her a teaspoon of honey twice a day at certain times and she never had another episode. The puppy loved the honey and looked on it as a treat.

Hopefullly, whatever happened with your baby will be easily diagnosed and simple to treat, too. Keep us posted!

Ears are fine. No infection and clean. We spent an hour there.

He's doing blood tests for thyroid (because she again gained another 3 lbs. - now 110 lb.),for seizures or anything else he thinks it could be. Funny, when they stuck her, she didn't stop bleeding. Even the vet said most of the time they can't get enough blood to run tests. Even with pressure, as soon as they stopped the pressure on the stick, she started bleeding all over again, so they had to put a pressure bandage on her.

He thinks she may have just had an allergic reaction to some food. I doubt it as we fed her the same thing last night as we did for the past week. His other thought is seizures.

We'll know more when the tests come back.

I hope she is okay - Kendra

I know how hard it is to worry about a pet. I have a dog who is 16 now and I know that she will not be around too much longer. I am so used to having her around that I can't imagine what it will be like when she finally passes on--makes me tear up just to think of it. :(

could she have gotten into rat poison somehow? - sereneone

maybe even out in the yard? Had a dog come into vet's office as an emergency once when we were there. It was acting funny and was having bleeding issues.

and we keep her on a leash at all times. Her BP was high at the time so it could have just been stress at being at the office. She just can't wait to get out of there.

I hope they check for diabetes too - alias

Pet diabetes is becoming rampant these days, due to their food being made from remnants of human food, and full of steroids and preservatives...even the dry food. Diabetes is rampant in humans so it is rampant in pets, as well. I hope doggie is okay.

I had a white lab who did the exact same thing, down to the holding up one paw! It only happened about 4 times total, probably over 2 years, then stopped. We never did figure out what it was and I never pursued it much with the vet, since I couldn't afford a bunch of tests.

birthday present for DH and he loves her to death. I just wish I could get him trained as well as Abby has him trained! LOL

Her granddad was a field champion and the mother a show champion. So she's from good stock.

The vet said we are not over-feeding her; in fact, it's less than what he feeds his dogs. Another thing he thought it could be was an allergic reaction to some type of food, yet she's been on the same food (except for trying the expensive brands a month or 2 ago)all her life. He was very surprised that she didn't like Taste of the Wild since his labs are crazy about it. Heck, she wouldn't even touch the treats they gave her. He was also surprised when we told him she hates water and getting wet.

I'm hoping this is a one time thing. We will probably find out today or tomorrow about the tests. We watched her like a hawk all yesterday and last night. Another night I didn't get much sleep. LOL

Keep us posted to what you find out - Old part-timer

It seems like such a coincidence our labs had the same symptoms. I'm really hoping you find out what it is, although, like I said, it only happened a few times to ours and then he seemed fine.

Our lab didn't care much for water either. He would wade in the creek up to his knees, but the only time he got his ears wet (by grabbing for a frog), he ended up with an ear infection!

BEST DEAR ABBY YET Dear Abby,My husband has a long record of money problems. He runs up huge credit-card bills and at the end of the month, if I try to pay them off, he shouts at me, saying I am stealing his money. He says pay the minimum and let our kids worry about the rest, but already we can hardly keep up with the interest. Also he has been so arrogant and abusive toward our neighbors that most of them no longer speak to us. The few that do are an odd bunch, to whom he has been giving a lo ...
