I have a mouse problem

Posted: May 12, 2011

I have a mouse, or maybe I should say mice, problem.  I've been setting snap traps, caught three and now the traps don't get tripped and the bait is eaten.  I have poision out under the kitchen appliances.  I have grandchildren who come over sometimes and don't want anything harmful to them, although it isn't like they play under the fridge and stove anyway and I so far they have not visited with traps out.  What can I do?  If anyone has any advice, please share.  Thank you in advance.

I understand what you mean. I have indoor cats and yes had a mouse, these are pampered lazy cats, and I didn't want to put out poison. I did some research on the internet and found out that mice did not like the smell of peppermint so I got some peppermint oil, usually you can get it at the pharmacy. I also got some small plastic containers like restuarants serve condiments in so I had something to put it in. I soaked a cottonball with the peppermint oil and put it in the container and then put it in several areas where I thought the mice were. I haven't had any problems since and usually routinely redo it in the fall when they do start coming in. The peppermint makes the house smell good too.

It was a thought!!! Those glue mouse traps work really well too.

I tried those glue traps years ago without realizing they just trap the mouse there. I got up and there was a baby mouse, feet all stuck in glue, looking straight at me. I guess the point is just to throw it in trash alive in the garbage and let it die of starvation or anxiety?

Are you sure you are setting traps correctly? Place them around the edges against the walls, because that is how they run since they are pretty much blind. I have had luck setting mine with peanut butter.

Thanks for the help - Jane

I am using peanut butter as bait and certainly hope I am setting them correctly. I did catch three at first. Though, I admit, I do get a bit of anxiety setting them for fear it is going to snap on my fingers. Those I have caught, seen and where the bait was taken without snapping the trap has been around the stove. My husband says they must be coming in through some kind of opening for house wiring or something, I don't know about that.

I used to have a cat. She was a cool critter, too. She wasn't much of a lady, not terribly social and full of attitude. Then when she got to be about 12 years old, she got dementia or something and started doing things she had never done all her life and actually became quite destructive and I had to let her go. If I can help it, I don't want to have to fall in love with new kitty because the chances are I would still outlive it and that is painful. Of course, I don't want mice either.

I like all your ideas and if you have more, please post them. I will reset the traps when I can get my gumption back up and plan to try that peppermint. Thank you so much.

I am not mechanical and the first time I set one it took me forever to figure it out. Try to figure out which way they are coming from, i.e. since they are blind make sure the trap is turned so that when they walk up, the bait well is first. I know what you mean, I worry about my digits too!
I tried the peppermint - sm

didn't work for me, but did make things smell nice. The only thing that worked was to remove their source of food. You would be suprised at what they can get into to eat. I went through my pantry and put EVERYTHING in plastic containers.

e have a hamster and a guinea pig. The mice were stealing the their food that I had out on my daughters dresser in bags. I put that in plastic containers. I put the dog food in a metal container. I made sure I got every single crumb off the floor immediately.

I have dogs who at first would catch them and play with them until they stopped moving. After a few days, the dogs became bored. Eventually, without using traps or poison, the mice vacated as there was no food source.

Also, try to find where they are gaining access to your house and close it off if possible.

The mice just absolutely freak me out. I can deal with spiders, but not mice. Good luck.

Mice are creepy. I am glad I am not the only one who thinks so. I found some Wilton's peppermint candy flavoring in my pantry. I will try that and the snap traps I have. I was looking at some electric no touch traps that operate on batteries on ebay. I am thinking about that, just hate to spend $50.00 on something that may not work. I am just desperate to get them gone.

Cat was my first thought too, but you have to have the right cat. - Mouse Hater!

I have the BEST cat EVER! :0) Everyone told me if I got her spayed she wouldn't get fat and lazy, but she didn't. She's a calico. I don't know if that makes a difference in personality, but she's a go getter that's for sure. I have another cat, orange tabby, who did get fat and lazy after she was spayed. So who knows.

My calico catches the mice outside the garage and in the driveway before they ever get into the house. She is awesome! The bad news is, she's a killer and also chases and catches birds and whatever else she can catch. I'm always finding nifty little gifts on the front porch in front of the door.

On the traps, trying put a small piece of fresh bread. Kind of ball it up and stick it to the trap. As the bread dries out, it will adhere tighter to the trap and the mouse will have to work tug harder, tripping the trap in the process. My stepdad told me he does that, they catch mice all the time.

Good luck!

I just wrote out this reply and then messed it up when submitting so I hope it doesn't go twice. Here goes again.

I had this same problem and they were little field mice that were stealing the bait even when I tried peanut butter and tying the bait with string. She told me to get a 5-gallon bucket like the kind they have in bakeries, fast food places, etc). I think they sell them in hardware stores now. You fill the bucket halfway up with water and then put it in front of your kitchen counter and take a ruler and put the bait on one end of the ruler and balance it with half the ruler on the countertop and half directly over the bucket. The mouse runs down the ruler to get the bait and the ruler and the mouse fall into the bucket. Usually when you get up in the morning the mouse will be drowned. One time I got up and the mouse had crawled up on top of the ruler and saved himself but that was because I used a ruler that was plastic and lightweight and floated instead of sinking into the water.

You can't believe how well this works. It got to the point where I would be in bed listening to the splash. We lived in an older house that was up off the ground with a crawl space which meant we had mice often.

It seems silly but it really does work. Good luck!

I also say my first choice when I had mice problems was to get a cat. Some cats are good mousers and some aren't. Siamese in particular are usually too self-absorbed to be mousers. A mistake some people make with cats is that they assume if the cats aren't fed, that they will catch mice. That is not true. They don't catch mice for food. All the cats I have had thought mice were play things.

I have also heard to put used cat litter near openings and mice will assume you have a cat and stay away.

My parents have a farm and they get a wheat that has rat poison in it, I don't remember what it is called. If you have an agricultural supply store in your area, you could check with them on what types of poisons or traps work best. The downside to poison, of course, is if you have pets or small children that might get into it then you wouldn't want to use them.

I have heard if you sprinkle baby powder on the floor where you have seen mice, you should be able to follow the tracks to find out where they are coming in, then use steel wool to fill up the hole.

As another poster mentioned, I have also heard calicos are usually good mousers. My current cat is a tuxedo cat and she will hunt anything. Spiders, bugs, my toes at 3:00 in the morning, ...

I have posted 2 times previously about the outside cat and his eye issues, trying to get him treated. Fed him for about 2 weeks and finally able to give a pat on the head, little touch on the back. My calico, the killer... well Saturday morning I got up to have my coffee in front of the TV in my chaise lounge which is my usual Saturday morning routine.  My kitty left me a big fat dead mouse right in the middle of my lounge!  I screamed bloody murder, dead or alive I hate 'em, and then I had to gather myself because I was home alone, no man in site and so it was up to me to dispose of the corpse.  I put on latex gloves and got the BBQ tongs and went out into my front yar ...

Have A Cat ProblemSep 10, 2010
I recently gave away the last of my momma cat's five kittens and she is now engorged and leaking milk.  The babies didn't go all at once--one one week, two the next, etc.--but she is still making milk.  She looks uncomfortable but I don't think she has a fever.  Will this resolve itself or will she need medical attention (besides the spaying coming up soon!)?  Thanks for any suggestions. ...

I have a dilemma.  I brought in a woman to rent my room on Saturday for 200.00 without a lease.  Within 3 hours, the entire house reeked of very strong cinnamon incense.  Fine...then comes Sunday, she begins by making coffee in my coffee pot and cleaning my kitchen counters, her first load of clothes goes in at at 9 AM and she washes clothes until late that night.  She puts her dish towels in place and takes it upon herself to wash mine.  She then finds a Sun-T ...
