Neuropathy and elbow problem?

Posted: Jan 19, 2012

Hi!  I was wondering if anybody out there has problems with neuropathy or elbow problems related to typing?  My right elbow has been acting up for about 6 months now (lateral epicondyle area), but now my whole arm is aching with it.  I have also been getting numbness and tingling in both hands, but also get it into my legs as well, and have some sciatica-type problems on the left side for the past 3-4 months.  Could this be related to sitting and computer work (although I do mostly editing and not much typing anymore)?  I hate going to doc for anything and was wondering if anybody else had problems like this.  I'm not that old (late 30s), but this past year it feels like everything is going wonky!!  Also, I do exercise several times a week (low impact) because it seems like if I don't then things get worse.  Any input/feedback is much appreciated!! =)

pain - me too

I have the numbness and tingling in my hands also and the elbow. How is your neck? Sound like sandpaper when you turn your head?

How about a chiropractic adjustment? Works everytime for me. He may have some ideas on how to position your chair or footpedal too.

Have a good chair? That would be a good start.

Really, a chiropractor is great for those of us that sit all day as we do. I have been sitting on the couch with my laptop lately and that is definitely not a good place. But I totally believe in the chiropractor.

Some help, I hope - RedWriter

I have had problems similar to yours. First, definitely do see a doctor. Second, (assuming doc clears you), sure, it could be due to things to do with sitting at computer. I found the mouse to be a major culprit in elbow/wrist/arm/neck pain. I experimented a bit and ended up buying an ergonomic stationary mouse (Microsoft with trackball), and then putting it on my left side (I'm right handed). Other things that have worked: Height of chair, height of monitor (have to play with both of those to see what's right for you), take q.15 min breaks to stretch your arms, back, and legs for 5 minutes. Sitting is a killer. Yoga stretches at the end of the shift for 30 minutes, ending with relaxation, deep breathing.
I do hope these things or something else you find relieves your pain. Best wishes.

Thanks for the input... - Tink

I appreciate the input. I've messed around with my desk/chair situation a few times. I've got one of those adjustable chairs, so it makes that easier. I don't use a mouse a whole lot. Stretching is a definite must I have found and I do take lots of breaks to get up and walk.

I do have a few more questions for you both. Do you get the pain/neuropathy only when you are working or at other times as well? At first, I didn't associate the elbow pain with computer work as it didn't hurt while I was working, but when I would be doing other things. I only started to get pain in the other arm in the last few days, although it is just a dull ache whereas the other arm has a definite spot that hurts, especially if I bump into anything at that spot right on the bone. Do you also have Raynaud symptoms? Just over the past week I've been getting those symptoms (it hasn't been very cold this season up until now). Also, to what kind of doctor would I go to have this checked out, a neuro or an ortho? I have a neurologist as I have a seizure disorder and actually thought some of the symptoms might be a side effect of the medication I'm on, but that certain med is supposed to help peripheral neuropathy rather than exacerbate it.

Thanks for all your help!!

In addition to seeing a DC, I - BeenThere

I echo the poster who suggested that you see a DC. A good chiro can do wonders for neck, shoulder, and back pain!

If I were you, I would supplement with pyridoxine (vitamin B6), 200 mg per day (don't exceed 200 mg) with food. B6 is THE vitamin for nerves, and this is borne out by scientific studies (see Dr. Fred Fuhr, UT Medical Center-Knoxville). I used to work right across from Dr. Fuhr and was there when he made the groundbreaking discovery!

B6 supplementation completely eliminated my SEVERE carpal tunnel syndrome and ulnar neuropathy. The shooting pains were going into my shoulder and waking me up from sleep at night. It was so painful it made my cry(and I "never" cry!).

B6 works in 90% of patients with CTS; the other 10% waited too long to begin supplementation.

I wish you the best!

Agreed, yup, +1, like, and Amen! - CMTx2

Another MT here who had GREAT results with B6 200 mg per day. I had CTS so bad before I was even 30 that I was unable to hold a brush or drive my car. Forget about actually being able to type.

In addition to seeing a chiro, I also highly, highly recommend acupuncture. I am beyond impressed at how effective it's been for me. I had damaged nerve ends in one part of my body following an accident 4 years ago. Very painful. THREE treatments, and the pain was gone. Should have been doing acupuncture years ago.

Did it help with the pain.  I have really REALLY bad tendinitis at the top of my forearm at the elbow.  My mom and stepdad have both used those velcro straps your wrap around the upper forearm and swear that the band helped and their tendinitis went away. Neuropathy & No Med Ins.Jun 03, 2013
I have severe bilateral foot neuropathy which I believe is from spinal stenosis.  A neurologist told me that is probably the cause on an ER visit (not related to neuropathy).   My feet sometimes burn so badly in the evenings I have to dip socks in cold water, put them on my feet with a fan on them to cool the feet down, or put them on ice. The pain is sharp, stabbing, burning but only lasts a few second at a time, striking about once a minute. It is excruciating to have to transcr ...

Peripheral NeuropathySep 28, 2012
My spinal stenosis has progressed to the point that I have severe peripheral neuropathy of both feet with accompanying pain. It can be very painful for me to operate the foot pedal, and just about impossible to have to keep tapping it for lousy dictators. My doc started me on 25 mg amitriptyline as it is known to reduce the nerve pain and it has actually helped. It also helps with being able to sleep through the night. Still, with the lousy dictators I'm in pain. Good dictators and ...

Diabetic Neuropathy Help ASAP Please?Jun 12, 2010
I am terrified...I have steroid-induced DM and have just been on insulin for about a week.  Yesterday morning I woke up nearly paralyzed in pain from my knee area down.  The pain was so intense at first I didn't even realize where it started from and had to figure it out.  My feet, thighs, knees, calves, etc., was in the most twisting, squeezing, burning pain I've ever experienced.  I took an OxyContin plus 2 Norcos and it still didn't subside for at least 2 h ...

Peripheral Neuropathy, My Hands.Sep 22, 2014
Hi guys,  I have had peripheral neuropathy from diabetes for a number of years.  Started in my hands to the point where I almost changed careers, but that went away and it started in my feet.  About that time, I got to sign up as a test subject for Lyrica for PN, luckily I was one of the subjects that got the medicine right off.  Noticed a change during the first few days.  Love the stuff. Anyway, I have started to lose feeling in my hands altogether.  It is starti ...

Have A Cat ProblemSep 10, 2010
I recently gave away the last of my momma cat's five kittens and she is now engorged and leaking milk.  The babies didn't go all at once--one one week, two the next, etc.--but she is still making milk.  She looks uncomfortable but I don't think she has a fever.  Will this resolve itself or will she need medical attention (besides the spaying coming up soon!)?  Thanks for any suggestions. ...

I have a dilemma.  I brought in a woman to rent my room on Saturday for 200.00 without a lease.  Within 3 hours, the entire house reeked of very strong cinnamon incense.  Fine...then comes Sunday, she begins by making coffee in my coffee pot and cleaning my kitchen counters, her first load of clothes goes in at at 9 AM and she washes clothes until late that night.  She puts her dish towels in place and takes it upon herself to wash mine.  She then finds a Sun-T ...

The Real ProblemSep 07, 2011

Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man ...

The vet gave us meds which we used without really knowing if she did ha ...

Anyone Ever Have Sciatic Nerve ProblemDec 11, 2009
