Anyone ever have sciatic nerve problem

Posted: Dec 11, 2009

The reason I ask is my sister told me tonight that she thinks she needs to see a neurosurgeon as she had a pinched nerve/sciatica lasting longer than a month and now she has charley horses from the knee up and are like knots in the leg.  If she sneezes she can feel a muscle pulling and feels it when trying to get up.  She has trouble sleeping and can't find a position, and has pain when sitting.

What kind of doctor would you suggest?  Someone told her chiro, I think neuro.  She said she is very nervous as she drives a bus and cannot, absolutely cannot be out of work.  Otherwise there will be no money coming in.

Has anyone ever had this and anyone have any suggestions.

I'd say a chiro, too. My hubby had the same issue! - kimba2

However, he had a REALLY good one. Good luck...that is the WORST!

Physical therapy works wonders for this. sm - sigh

I'd personally suggest she see an orthopod and get started in some PT. I have a brother who's had really good help that way.

I hope this helps. I know that's an awful pain!

I get it sometimes. I find that regular aspirin and easy - back & abdominal exercises can - sm

really help a lot. Just easy, half-crunches while lying on the floor watching TV, and easy straight-leg lifts while on stomach, keeping both hips on the floor, can do SO MUCH! And instead of doing a large number of reps at any one time, do the exercises multiple times a day, especially after you've overdone it by standing or lifting too much. The stronger your abdominals & back muscles are, the less likely a herniated disc is to bulge out far enough to touch the sciatic nerve and cause the pain. My aunt had it, and had good luck with Celebrex, but I don't know if this medication is good to use long-term or not. I would go to the orthopedist and get some good back exerises, and then do them religiously.

Hope you feel better soon! :)

I say try the chiro too. I did it and it really helped me. The less invasive the better. The medical docs we know do one of two things: Meds or surgery. Try the chiropractor first.

yoga - pose

Sit on the floor. Put one bent knee directly in front of you. Put the other bent knee on top of the first knee. Sit up straight and bend over the knees putting your forehead on the floor or close. Hold pose with normal breathing for as long as you can stand it and then switch the legs and lean forward again. Pain should be gone within three days. There are other yoga poses you can add to this one..

cow face - yoga

I had this problem back in the 80s and I saw a few doctors for it and no help. I saw a chiro and I actually had accupuncture first because it was so bad because I let it go so long. After the accupuncture loosened everything up, the chiro was able to move my back and hip and took care of the sciatic nerve pain. The accupuncture I did was with the same chiro. I have had accupuncture with a Chinese doctor, but never again.

Every now and then I move wrong and will get the problem again, but a quick call to the chiro will take care of it. Do not wait. It will take longer to fix, but it definitely works. Been there done that.

Ive never tried acupuncture myself, but have seen it - work wonders for some animals. S/M

I once knew a lady whose quarter horse gelding had slipped down a cliff (had to be air-lifted out), and injured his back. I watched the vet gently put in the needles, and over a period of about 20-30 minutes, the horse went from drooping his head and neck and twitching his muscles in pain, to happy and relaxed, and apparently pain-free, or close to it. After several weeks of treatment his injury (probably a strain or ?) healed completely, and the lady was able to ride him again.

Ever notice how, if you pinch yourself on one part of your body, you'll feel something in another part of your body? That must have something to do with how acupunture works. Next time I have chronic pain, I hope to be able to give acupunture a try. Can't hurt, might help!

Thank you everyone - just me/hmmm

I've copied the responses in an email to her (she lives across country). I'll make sure she gets the email. I'm glad we have a board like this where people who have had similar problems can share what they did to help.

I think she's more comfortable going to a chiropractor. Right now she's panicked she is going to need surgery and she can't do that, so all of your responses have helped a lot and hope it reassures her.

Thanks again.

I have had this in the past. I had to have back surgery. She definitely needs to see a neurosurgeon. Mine was foraminal stenosis pinching the nerve or it could be a ruptured disc. Before I had back surgery, I went to a chiropracter and it made it worse and then I went to see orthopedic back surgeon and it did not recommend to me a chiropracter as mine was a spinal canal problem and no kind of manipulation was going to take care of that. She needs to get an MRI and that will tell it what is going on, but tell her not to let it go too long or it might damage a nerve beyond fixing. That sciatic runs from the back down to the toe. My leg totally went out under me one day when I was walking and I had no choice but to do something. No antiinflammatory helped me either as it was a stenosis L5-S1 pinching the nerves and now 20 years it is acting up again and another MRI shows stenosis again on right side, but I have never been the same in my back since then. My core is just shot as I do not exercise to strengthen it and then I sit all day which does not help. Good luck but get her to go to the doctor ASAP.

Some Nerve!Mar 29, 2011
So, DH and I went to the doc's office today for his schedule appointment.  he has had a nasty case of bronchitis this spring.  Well, he went on ahead and registered, got all the paper work done and didn't have to wait long and they called him back.  I had gone to say hello to one of the gals there that I know and when I went to the waiting room, DH was not there.  I assumed he had been called back so went to chat with my friend some more. Does Anyone Have Ulnar Nerve Compression?Oct 22, 2010
I have been an MT for over 20 years and in the past three months developed shoulder pain and numbness/tingling in my pinky and ring fingers all the time to where I cannot type well any longer.  Dr. said it was ulnar nerve compression and recommended surgery after conservative treatment did not help.  Surgery was three weeks ago and symptoms have not improved at all.  I am 54 and if I am unable to work as an MT any longer I don't know what to do.  Any suggestions would be ...

Have A Cat ProblemSep 10, 2010
I recently gave away the last of my momma cat's five kittens and she is now engorged and leaking milk.  The babies didn't go all at once--one one week, two the next, etc.--but she is still making milk.  She looks uncomfortable but I don't think she has a fever.  Will this resolve itself or will she need medical attention (besides the spaying coming up soon!)?  Thanks for any suggestions. ...

OMG - I HAVE A PROBLEM!!!Sep 09, 2010
I have a dilemma.  I brought in a woman to rent my room on Saturday for 200.00 without a lease.  Within 3 hours, the entire house reeked of very strong cinnamon incense.  Fine...then comes Sunday, she begins by making coffee in my coffee pot and cleaning my kitchen counters, her first load of clothes goes in at at 9 AM and she washes clothes until late that night.  She puts her dish towels in place and takes it upon herself to wash mine.  She then finds a Sun-T ...

for example, we have people today posting on the MM board that they cherry pick and that if we were smart, we'd do it to.  We have people who post that if I get my feelings hurt by something posted on these forums, it's because I'm too sensitive (certainly not because what they said is too harsh, oh no!).  Bet you anything these people claim to be Christian.  It's okay though because they believe.  They got their get out of jail free card.  They' ...

The Real ProblemSep 07, 2011
For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man ...

Problem With NeighborJun 21, 2014
I'm starting to have a problem with my neighbor. We live in a community of little cottages that are very close together. We are not supposed to smoke inside the unit, and when we moved in, the property manager said that eve ...

Cat And Litter Box ProblemJun 01, 2015

She has 2 litter boxes and has always used one for pee and one for poop, but as she in an indoors/outdoors cat, she rarely uses either box except in winter.. We took her to the vet who said that he didn't think she had a UTI but that she might have/have had an infection of the vulva (blank stare from my husband at that point). The vet gave us meds which we used without really knowing if she did ha ...
