"What Makes People Vote Republican?" "...they honestly prefer

Posted: Nov 21, 2012

This article is a short form of a fantastic book by psychologist Jonathan Haidt. A lib in the beginning, he started studying conservatives and morality and ended up liking and respecting, and valuing, the conservative approach to morality. Some initial excerpts, link to article at bottom:

WHAT MAKES PEOPLE VOTE REPUBLICAN?

What makes people vote Republican? Why in particular do working class and rural Americans usually vote for pro-business Republicans when their economic interests would seem better served by Democratic policies? We psychologists have been examining the origins of ideology...

...we have refined our diagnosis: conservatism is a partially heritable personality trait that predisposes some people to be cognitively inflexible, fond of hierarchy, and inordinately afraid of uncertainty, change, and death. People vote Republican because Republicans offer "moral clarity"—a simple vision of good and evil that activates deep seated fears in much of the electorate. Democrats, in contrast, appeal to reason with their long-winded explorations of policy options for a complex world. ...

Diagnosis is a pleasure. It is a thrill to solve a mystery... But with pleasure comes seduction, and with righteous pleasure comes seduction wearing a halo. Our diagnosis explains away Republican successes while convincing us and our fellow liberals that we hold the moral high ground.

Our diagnosis tells us that we have nothing to learn from other ideologies, and it blinds us to what I think is one of the main reasons that so many Americans voted Republican over the last 30 years: they honestly prefer the Republican vision of a moral order to the one offered by Democrats. To see what Democrats have been missing, it helps to take off the halo, step back for a moment, and think about what morality really is. ...

This is the first rule of moral psychology: feelings come first and tilt the mental playing field on which reasons and arguments compete. If people want to reach a conclusion, they can usually find a way to do so. The Democrats have historically failed to grasp this rule, choosing uninspiring and aloof candidates who thought that policy arguments were forms of persuasion.

...I would say that the second rule of moral psychology is that morality is not just about how we treat each other (as most liberals think); it is also about binding groups together, supporting essential institutions, and living in a sanctified and noble way.

When Republicans say that Democrats "just don't get it," this is the "it" to which they refer. Conservative positions on gays, guns, god, and immigration must be understood as means to achieve one kind of morally ordered society. When Democrats try to explain away these positions using pop psychology they err, they alienate, and they earn the label "elitist." But how can Democrats learn to see—let alone respect—a moral order they regard as narrow-minded, racist, and dumb?

Pathetic how people just rag on each other - no wonder our country is so divided when people see another viewpoint as "narrow-minded, racist, and dumb." Just because you don't understand something doesn't make it wrong.

Read the article. It's not insulting. Those excerpts are an - intro to the subject, which is developed. BTW,

[ In Reply To ..]
in the process it goes on to explain why and how profoundly some liberals are wrong in seeing conservatives that way.

It doesn't sound like you actually clicked through and read the article. You should.

Conservatives who want to know how to describe their beliefs - try this: Conservative morality is also about

binding groups together, supporting essential institutions, and living in a sanctified and noble way."

"not just about how we treat each other (as most liberals think)."

Reading the article might be worthwhile if you're tired of defining yourself by what you are against because you don't have a better answer handy.

BTW (I'm doing a Backwards Typist thing here), out of 85 hits at this point there are:
4 likes. Low # but normal because link takes people elsewhere (and most people don't "vote" anyway).
BUT, 8 dislikes. Now, this is actually a high number for this kind of post, and I'm curious. Could these be from liberals who don't like finding we don't have a lock on morality or from conservatives--in which case, why? Fundamental disagreement with Haidt's conclusions...or? (I had imagined this as a path to some conservative high ground and thus a sort of holiday season gift, so to speak. :)

A dem.

Why in the world would you think that.. It's blatanly insulting - Here is your answer

[ In Reply To ..]
1. Knew it was bad when he said a lib started studying conservatives. What that means is get ready everyone, going to insult conservatives.

2. "Why in particular do working class and rural Americans usually vote for pro-business Republicans when their economic interests would seem better served by Democratic policies?" I'll tell you why. Because our economic interests (pro small business, lower taxes, affordable health care for all, etc, etc) are not better served by democrat policies (i.e. socialist policies).

3. "...we have refined our diagnosis". That is one of those "what the ..." moments. Diagnoses? Oh wait, was he trying to be funny or trying to sound like he has a background in medicine?

I won't even go into the rest of the article. It's insulting and just another hack job to insult conservatives.

No thanks. How about a credible article.

Determinedly ignorant and resentful. Your loss, - and unfortunately everyone else's. nm
