Excuse me, but this just totally gets my girdle in a pinch.,,
My upstairs neighbor is on welfare... but does not need to be and totally abuses this. She worked prior to getting pregnant, as did her husband. When she got pregnant, she had him quit his job at a local hospital, where he had full benefits, to work under the table (to hold her hand, and he is making 3x the money he did). Her parents now pay the rent and other expenses. She had the baby 8 MONTHS AGO. She is still collecting welfare. Her house is so filthy that I now longer will feed their cats upstairs when THEY GO ON VACATION EVERY WEEKEND but instead feed them downstairs.
She goes shopping at Nordstrom's 2-4 times a week, showing me all the stuff she got (she has 5 pairs of Uggs, including the tall $250 boots) and today she had the nerve to show off her new $500 blender and laughs at all the money and food stamps she gets that save her the money so she can shop.
Both my husband and I are working numerous jobs, as he lost his benefits, and now we each pay $1000 per month premiums, $1500 per year each out-of-pocket expenses before insurance kicks in, about $2000 per month in meds each, and every 2 weeeks I pay a lot of money for procedures to keep pain down to work, yet here are 2 healthy young people not working (or one working under the table and getting paid for it). My taxes are being spent on her expensive blender and Ugg boots. So nice to know. I wish somebody would turn them in...... both for the filthy house and fraud!

[ In Reply To ..]found out really did no good, if it was investigated the welfare did not stop and neither did the food stamps, in fact I felt like I was the one that was in the wrong for even calling. I knew of a mother getting the above plus housing that you and I were paying for and was living with a guy who worked for the city. Her 3 kids were living in squalor but I tried and to tell the truth, probably sorry I wasted my time.

If you know where the husband is working under the table, report that. Just FYI, in many states you cannot get welfare if you *quit* a job except for certain reasons like sexual harassment, and in that case you must also file a formal complaint.
Any help they receive must also be reported, including help with rent, etc. If they are not doing that, and you seem to think they are not, then that can be reported, also.
You don't say what state you're in, but cash welfare benefits aren't much in Louisiana - less than $300 per month for a family of 3. That type of extra income hardly supports the purchase of a lot of Ugg boots or big shopping sprees.
The above rules apply to food stamps, also, pretty much. They are supposed to be informed about ANY income, including under the table income.
If the house is dangerously filthy, please report them to child protection. Usually you can do that anonymously. They would probably start the ball rolling as far as investigating how the family is supporting itself.

Yes, I wish I would have snapped a few pictures last time I was there. That poor kid. Every time I run into them outside, the kid has no shoes or socks on, and it is winter here, even when it was raining...Sunday night while I was sitting outside with the neighbors across the way, she took the baby outside and was walking on the balcony for 15 minutes while it was raining, and the baby was wearing only a diaper. I was wearing the neighbor's heavy coat, as I was freezing.
