Second City responds to Rick Perry’s latest gay-bashing ad

Here's the God-fearing anti-gay video that Rick Perry released yesterday. God, you see, if upset that the President is letting gays serve openly in the military. God is okay with gays serving in the closet, but not open. He's a detail man, that God.

ETA: They're also having a field day out there over the jacket Perry wore in his ad.

From Andrew Sullivan's blog

Oh and does that jacket in the ad look familiar? It's identical to that worn by the closeted Ennis (Heath Ledger) in Brokeback Mountain. Just sayin'.

I thought Perry was sort of moderate until - mthead

I saw that ad. It was sickening and scary. I'm a lefty drifting toward the center in my old age and was trying to be open minded about all of the candidates. I didn't think Perry had a shot after his abysmal debate performances. Guess he's given up on the moderates and is targeting the far right. JMHO.

I have not always supported Rick Perry and some of his politics, but I have to say that I am proud that he is stepping up to the plate as a Christian and saying what needs to be said. I don't think this message is so much about gays serving openly in the military as much as it is about our loss of religious freedom at the hands of those who disagree. Why is it okay for the gay and lesbian population to have their rallys and not okay for Christians to pray openly and without fear of reprisal from those who would be "offended." Can they not see that we are just as offended by some of their actions?

And by the way, that is a Carhartt jacket. I would venture to say that most men's closets in Texas hold at least one of these. It is a just a jacket...nothing more and nothing less....and certainly not any kind of political statement.

As a TexaN....obviously I am not a Texas. LOL - Old Woman

Right. He was only using that as a comparison. - People are going overboard, as usual. nm

Don't you mean Perry has gone overboard, as usual? - Ad is bogus from beginning to end.

For starters, other than expressing a deep personal disdain for the repeal of DADT, Perry's contrasting gay rights to serve openly in the military to his totally erroneous assertion that, "our kids can't openly celebrate Christmas" in schools serves no discernible purpose in advancing his overall explicit message...which is to promote another wingnut paranoid delusion that Obama has waged some imagined war on religion and that he is the Christian soldier that can do battle and single-handedly defeat such evil secular forces. His whining inclusion that kids can't "pray in school" in the same breath that he bemoans the fiction that open celebration of Christmas is prohibited clearly illustrates his inability to grasp even the most elementary concepts of the first amendment that prohibit the state from either establishing or promoting the PRACTICE of religion...which prayer clearly is.

The reality is that the courts have been quite liberal in their interpretation of the first amendment establishment clause. Schools have always not only openly recognized and celebrated Christmas, but also include elaborate historical and compartive teachings of the various religious traditions in their curricula. Schools sponsor Christmas parties, plays, music programs and a variety of other events before closing down completely for the holiday break in recognition and observance these same religious traditions. Specifically, they are not prevented from teaching the story of the birth of Jesus, or Christmas songs and music. They can openly display such associated symbols as the Christmas tree, the creche, angels, etc. There is virtually no censorship of student's rights to free speech, including voicing their own personal religious beliefs, unless in doing so they become "disruptive" or somehow "abridge" another student's religious expression. By law, they are allowed to wear clothing and jewelry that convey religious meaning and to distribute literature that is religious in nature.

Perry's blab about Obama's alleged war on religion is completely bogus and does not merit further consideration, except to say that instead of invoking gays in the military and taking this Christian soldier approach in a campaign ad, perhaps it would be more appropriate for him to simply state that, as a Christian, he intends to defy the Founding Fathers expressed intent by reversing certain sections of the first amendment to allow for the open PRACTICE of Christianity (in the form of prayer) in schools....and see just how much closer that gets him to the Oval office.

Here is an excellent article on the subject of established liberal legal precedents regarding open religious expression in schools.

Every last single one of them needs to be booted out.

Unfortunately, though, they're not doing a bang-up job of selecting new candidates. If anything, they're WORSE.
