Rick Perry and the stifling of education in Texas

Posted: Sep 12, 2013

"...fundamental scientific truths are agreed upon by the vast, overwhelming majority of scientists who study those particular fields, because of the vast, overwhelming evidence in those particular fields supporting them. It's important that we teach this to young students, as well as how to understand what constitutes real evidence as opposed to ideological zealotry." "If you live in Texas, however, that necessity is under a real threat." http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2013/09/12/texas_creationists_textbook_reviewers_want_more_religion_in_their_science.html;

Science class should be science class. - Not Bible study.

I also think schools should teach a religion class. Not just one religion, but all of the major religions people are likely to encounter in their lifetime, to help people understand one another and prevent unnecessary understandings, and simply to create a more well-rounded and less ignorant population.

However, I do not think public schools should ever favor one religion over another, and I do not think they should ever try to persuade children to believe in a religion.

That is not what school is for, that's what church is for.

"World religions" could be taught in Mythology class, but - Realist

[ In Reply To ..]
which should be selected? There's been thousands of them.

Even I won't go for that. Religion is a major force. - We should respect and understand

[ In Reply To ..]
the precepts of major types of religions. our children need to be taught that.
maybe so, but that is not the job of public schools - sm (OP)
[ In Reply To ..]
Plus, who would decide which are the major religions? Perhaps that would be decided on a state-by-state basis as is being done with the curriculum and textbooks in Texas.

Belief is an article of faith, and should remain under the purview of faith-based activities. Religion is a construct of man, and while it may be a purposeful one, religious beliefs should not be infiltrating our curricula and diluting the important work of education.
Who decides anything? What's bigger than religion - in our world? It NEEDS to be taught
[ In Reply To ..]
as part of history and social sciences. Without understanding this major driver of personal and world events, people cannot vote and act wisely and responsibly.

Look at that idiot judge in Tennessee who required parents to change their baby's name from Messiah (apparently in style right now) because, according to her, that name has to be earned and there's only one Messiah and that's our Lord Jesus Christ. She needs to be kicked out of her position and sent back to ELEMENTARY school so she can learn that hers is one of many belief systems.
science, for one - sm

I have no problem with comparative religion being taught as part of the social sciences. However, I do not agree that people are unable to vote or act wisely and responsibly without religion. The religious right broadly denies climate change in favor of faith-based notions, and is not acting wisely or voting responsibly when it comes to this issue (for example).

I don't believe it's reasonable, in this day and age, for any school system to demand quid pro quo instruction of creationism to offset the teaching of evolution.
I disagree. Religion plays a huge role in our history - and is essential in understanding
[ In Reply To ..]
history. Also, the more knowledge our students have about the world around us, the more well-rounded and adaptable they will be as adults.

We teach about other cultures, and how many cultures are deeply entrenched in religion? Leaving that part out of it gives students an incomplete picture of the world around them. Knowledge is power.

In 6th grade, I learned about the 5 pillars of Islam as a special project in my social studies class. It was my favorite part of the class (closely followed by deciphering ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics), and I would have loved to have had an entire class just for studying world religions. It wasn't that I was fascinated by Islam, I was fascinated by learning how other people in the world lived. It actually made me feel smart! I wish we had also learned Buddhism. I would love to know more about that.

The major religions can be easily determined by the number of people who ascribe to those beliefs.

whether religion is taught in school is beside the point. The question is: Should our science programs be altered by religious pressure?
regarding the major religions - ...
[ In Reply To ..]
if we were to teach religion based on the number of people who ascribe to those beliefs, Chinese folk religions would outnumber Judaism by more than 400 million people. Just a thought for you to consider.
Is that a problem? - nm

like they used to would be fine. My parents were better educated in one room schools with 6 grades together than kids are today. PC gone wild.

I agree. However, religion is not "PC" - nm

Today's high school students can't even spell simple words, yet they go on to be teachers (and perpetuate learning the WRONG stuff) or doctors or lawyers.
