Texas Governor Rick Perry indicted for abuse of power.

Posted: Aug 15, 2014

It couldn't have happened to a more deserving guy.

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Gov. Rick Perry has been indicted for abuse of power after carrying out a threat to veto funding for state public corruption prosecutors.

The Republican governor's accused of abusing his official powers by publicly promising to veto $7.5 million for the state public integrity unit at the Travis County District Attorney's office. He was indicted by an Austin grand jury Friday on felony counts of abuse of official capacity and coercion of a public servant. Maximum punishment on the first charge is five to 99 years in prison. The second is two to 10 years.

Perry said he'd veto the funding if the district attorney, Rosemary Lehmberg, didn't resign. Lehmberg had recently been convicted of drunken driving. When Lehmberg refused, Perry carried out his veto.

;

Abuse of power...hmmmmm... - That sounds familiar.

I think I heard something similar going down on Pennsylvania Avenue.

This is political. So now you can simply be indicted for - supporting another position? sm

[ In Reply To ..]
What next, thought crimes? The case has no merit. Perry isn’t running for gov. again, so this mostly seems like spite to me. I don't see how a veto is an abuse of power. It wasn't a threat, it was a promise. These Austin prosecutors have a history of political prosecutions and destroying lives.

There is no right and wrong now, everything is - political, since "abuse of power"

[ In Reply To ..]
seems to be the legal charge of the day, why not charge Obama and AG contempt of Congress and Holder with abuse of power?
I think it's CONGRESS who should be sued. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I think the "people" should file a class action suit against the do-nothing Congress. They have the distinction of being the highest "do-nothing" Congress in the history of this country!
I like it when they do nothing, that means they aren't - passing more laws to
[ In Reply To ..]
restrict freedom.
Yes, that IS true! - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
But they are the biggest "takers" by accepting their enormous paychecks for "doing nothing" for about 86 days a year!

I think they ALL should earn the minimum wage!
It used to be that way. They we public servants. - Senators were elected by

Perry said he's veto the funding if Rosemary Lemhberg - didn't resign because she

What does that have to do with this thread? - what?

Please start a new thread if you want. That is the advice I often seen offered to Dems when they go "off topic" and not nearly off topic as this is.
Isn't this thread about abuse of power? What's off - topic about that? NM

Lesson, never demand a drunken Democrat - resign from office, as they
[ In Reply To ..]
are a protected and admired class of people.
He is free to demand she resign - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
What he is not free to do is to withhold funding until his demands are met. Democrats are not a protected class of people. The LAW is protected. The constitution is protected. Due process is protected. If you
"love" America, and "love" our constitution, you can get over this.
What a lady! - I hope she's disbarred, too.

I'm glad this is a political thing and not a racial thing.
Of course you're glad! - nm

This nothing more than partisan harrassment - designed to complicate

[ In Reply To ..]
his possible presidential run.

For the benefit of non-Texans, they need to know that the Travis County District Attorney has legal jurisdiction over every elected official in the state, including those elected to federal office. Travis County is home to the capitol, Austin, and generally populated by government workers, university faculty, techies, artists, musicians and dopers; it's basically San Francisco on the Colorado. As a consequence, they elect far left local politicians and their DA happens to exert statewide power, and they have no trouble finding a grand jury that's ready to indict a Republican for chewing gum on the wrong side of his mouth.
All she has to do is resign and he will reinstate the - funding, I mean she was

convicted of a DWI. She has no business heading any "ethics" investigation. She has no ethics.

Never let a good crisis go to waste.
umm...that's abuse of power - sm

It's a form of extortion.
No, it's not. She was charged with a DWI. - Daffy Nation
[ In Reply To ..]
Are you defending her because she is a Democrat? How can someone who behaves unethically be on an ethics committee?
Yes, it is. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
There is due process for these situations. Demanding someone resign for Perry to reinstitute funding is EXTORTION. I don't care what party she is from. The governor is free to pursue due process like other law-abiding citizens.
Perry didn't say that, I posted that. Facts don't - matter, it's all about

politics.
Oh, no. He didn't say that. No, no! He said this... - and I quote
[ In Reply To ..]
"I don’t think the citizens of Texas can trust you with $7.5 million dollars, so I am not going to give you $7.5 million dollars of Texans money. You resign, and we will pass the money to the office, but its not going to be given to you for your stewardship."

That's a quote.

[ In Reply To ..]
The veto was a threatened veto. It was used to attempt to coerce an elected official to step down from her position as a District Attorney for Texas.

When the people elect a Democrat, the Republican governor does not have the right to subvert the people's choice even if he doesn't like the people's choice or the people who chose her are not his type of people.

Sorry Rick! Oops!

Abuse of Power, Lawlessness - eom

And look at the deflection all over the place in this thread. They can't admit their party is vengeful and corrupt.

Dear Gov Oops and Reps: Buh bye 2016.

So I guess this means you're okay with a - drunk administering ethics

[ In Reply To ..]
The laws cover the entire United States - in case you didn't know - nm
[ In Reply To ..]
It never USED to be that way. Can you provide - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
a credible source for that information because:

"US FEDERAL law prohibits anyone convicted of a felony form POSSESSING a gun. Unless you receive a pardon, or legal equivalent, from the state that convicted you, you can't legally own a gun."

Texas probably has a provision that allows ANY felon to automatically qualify to own a gun. Heck, Texas probably even BUYS those guns for felons, given Texas and their "gun worship."
Aren't you "jumping the gun" here? No one has been - convicted of anything. xx
[ In Reply To ..]
x
But if he IS convicted, one uninformed poster - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
says that in ALL states, felons get to own a gun! That simply is NOT true and the fact that she knows nothing about what the law REALLY is, makes me wonder how many other TPubs, who are VOTERS, have the same or similar ignorance of the law, in general.
That's why I said "charged" not convicted - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Really wasn't presuming he was any more dangerous with a gun than he had been before, but thought it would be humorous if a technicality of being charged with a felony might restrict his photo ops.
LOL! - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Thanks for the chuckle.

I'm just so tired of people posting things that are blatantly untrue on this board, and it scares me that they're allowed to VOTE!

If he were CONVICTED of a felony in any other state in the Union, he would NOT be allowed to possess a firearm.

Maybe he can buy a toy gun, hold it up to the cop while explaining it's a toy - whoops -- no, that wouldn't work. You get SHOT if you try to do that if you're just a petty regular citizen (though I'm sure Perry would get away with it). :-)

Judging by news we see, I think Texas allows - any whacko to carry a gun.

[ In Reply To ..]
nm

I agree. - nm

[ In Reply To ..]

Another news feed posted that Perry - will lose his right to carry

[ In Reply To ..]
No guns for Rick for a while. Texas law mandates that once indicted for a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year, the individual loses the right to carry a firearm. Bonus: state-issued concealed handgun license suspended until the case is decided.

any sources to refute?

The whole thing smells fishy that's for sure. Demns been trying to go after him for how long now? He definitely is a threat to them.

This whole indictment and abuse of power thingy they are trying to pin on him definitely smells fishy. Guess that's what desperation smells like. Oh yeah, and it just so happened right before election time? Oh gee, what a coincidence...NOT!

From reading all the articles on all sides of the isle he did nothing wrong. He asked a drunk to resign from office. She sounds like a real case that's for sure. Not only should she resign but go to jail for what she did.

Dems are showing their desperation and ignorance by trying to pull this scam. They are already failing. I hope they keep going with these nazi gestapo tactics because it keeps digging their hole further and further.

November is going to be GREAT!!! Maybe then the country can begin to heal.

Yeah, it would be a shame to mess up - Perry's run for 2016

[ In Reply To ..]
He was so much fun last time, and he helps keep the Republicans at odds with one another. If enough of the current list get involved in their own issues and can't run, they might come up with a viable candidate. Oh my! Sounds like the impeachment/law suit stuff with Obama to me.

But, seriously, I would rather the Republicans come up with a better candidate, just in case they win!

Your so called "facts" are again incorrect. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
This "abuse of power thingy" as you call it has been ongoing for quite awhile and didn't just start "before election time."

Quote: "From reading all the articles on all sides of the isle he did nothing wrong. He asked a drunk to resign from office. She sounds like a real case that's for sure. Not only should she resign but go to jail for what she did."

She did go to jail. How did you read "all the articles from all sides of the" aisle and manage to not see that? It's all over the internet in lots and lots of the articles and is old news.

"Dems are showing their desperation and ignorance by trying to pull this scam. They are already failing. I hope they keep going with these nazi gestapo tactics because it keeps digging their hole further and further."

Oh, good, a Saul Alinsky tactic, and you guys seem to love Saul so much when you're not busy hating on him. Besides, in what alternate universe would a double felony indictment handed down from an investigation by a nonpartisan special investigator be considered "already failing?"
All or most of Mrs. Tangles' "facts" are nothing - but tangled myths.
