Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush...am

Posted: Sep 15, 2012

were honorable men who put their country first in a time of crisis.

"Because Republicans have frequently likened President Obama to Jimmy Carter, we were curious to learn how candidate Ronald Reagan responded to the worst foreign policy disaster on Carter’s watch — the failed mission to rescue U.S. diplomats in Iran, resulting in the deaths of eight servicemen.

In April 1980, Reagan was still battling George H.W. Bush for the GOP nomination, while Sen. Edward M. Kennedy was challenging Carter for the Democratic nomination. This is excerpted from The Washington Post reporting on the political fallout:

Carter's presidential rivals were charitable. Republican George Bush supported the president's actions without reservation. Ronald Reagan and Edward Kennedy offered sympathy to the families of the dead troopers and called for national "unity."

Bush was most outspoken, saying, "I unequivocally support the president — no ifs, ands or buts. . . . He made a difficult, courageous decision."

In strikingly similar formal statements, which they declined to amplify, Reagan and Kennedy expressed sympathy for the family of the eight men killed in the rescue effort, and pledged to preserve "national unity" in the cause of the hostages' release.

Before breaking off his Michigan campaigning to return to Washington, Kennedy said, "I share the feeling of all Americans at this sad moment for our country. . . . Whatever our other differences, we are one nation in our commitment to the hostages, our concern for their families, and our sorrow for the brave men who gave their lives trying to rescue their fellow citizens."

A few hours later, Reagan told a Los Angeles press conference, "This is a difficult day for all of us Americans. . . . It is time for us . . . to stand united. It is a day for quiet reflection . . . when words should be few and confined essentially to our prayers."

More multiple-personality disorder from the left. - Decide: Do you hate Reagan or love him?

Dems do love to quote Reagan one moment when it suits them, then demonize him when that suits them better.

This is a VERY selective piece that seeks to use a carefully chosen, highly-filtered bit of Reagan history because they think it will cast Romney in an uncharitable light.

I lived through this period of history as a politically active adult, so I can tell you who weren't there first-hand. Reagan's criticism of Carter's handling of the hostage crisis was immediate, it was harsh, it was unequivocal, it was unapologetic, and it was unrelenting.

Now, all of a sudden, he's a nice guy because he made a couple of noncommittal comments, and (of course) Romney isn't a nice guy because, dammit, he didn't utter a bunch of meaningless euphemisms.

Let's also remember this. Romney didn't just jump into his shoes and rush out onto the front lawn to issue his statement. He issued the statement ONLY AFTER LITERALLY HOURS AND HOURS OF TOTAL SILENCE FROM THE WHITE HOUSE. DEAD AIR. OBAMA, MISSING IN ACTION - AGAIN.

Perhaps Barry was trying to figure out whether next time he should use his 7 iron or his wedge to hit the green on that pesky par-5 seventh hole.

But he had NOTHING to say. I'll give Romney props for saying SOMETHING.

Nice try, Dems. That MPD thing ain't workin' for ya.

That's intrinsic to liberals--we admire what we find admirable, - condemn what we do not. All in one person.

No conflict whatsoever. No mindless or unconditional loyalty. No opposing something only because another group supports it.

And Peter said "If you believe, clap your hands. Don't - let Tinkerbell die!" nm

None needed.
No, really. It's an enormous difference between typical libs - and the more rigid type of conservatives.
[ In Reply To ..]
Normal conservatives are more like liberals in this respect, although liberals especially tend to expect and look for more of the multiple facets of any person and situation.

Of course, like the right, there are rigid thinkers out on the far fringe who identify themselves as liberal and espouse liberal causes. Wouldn't do not to not admit that sad truth. :)
You really have people "classified" don't you? - Total stereotypical nonsense.
[ In Reply To ..]
If I could create a graph of any personality trait, "style" of thinking, "regard for multiple facets" or any of the rest of it - one for liberals and one for conservatives - you wouldn't be able to pick out which one was which.

I guarantee.
Completely wrong. But the graphs aren't mine and don't - need you to create them. Go educate yourself. SM

You know, it's just fine to be different as long as it's in a responsible, functional way. Good thing, because we have no choice. We not only are hard wired to at least some degree think differently from each other but also from ourselves at different ages and in different situations.
That may have been true in the past but - not anymore. nm

the release from the amassador's office (which came out 6 hours earlier) WHILE the embassy was being attacked! So what he really did was attack the embassy while they were being killed because they had put out a statement trying to prevent the whole incident. Yeah...he REALLY needs to be in charge...not.

Stop it, VTMT. - You're making my sides ache.

Ronald Reagan asked Congress to raise the debt ceiling 18 times, and 18 times he got what he asked for.  In Sepember 1987, he made the following statement in a radio address regarding the consequences of default:  "Congress consistently brings the government to the edge of default before facing its responsibility, " Reagan says. "This brinkmanship threatens the holders of government bonds and those who rely on Social Security and veterans benefits. Interest rates would skyrocket, inst ...

Ronald Reagan Speaks Out Against Socialized MedicineJul 30, 2013
Happy 48th birthday to Medicare.  Ronald Reagan and the right wing tried to kill Medicare before it was signed, sealed, and delivered on July 30, 1965, by calling it socialized medicine and the end of America as we know it. Quoting Reagan: “[I]f you don’t [stop Medicare] and I don’t do it, one of these days you and I are going to spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it once was like in America when men were free.” Quoti ...

For me that says it all.  Trump is a petty little man not worthy to be called a Republican. For people who say the Republican party ignored them or let them down, you let it happen. Why George W. Bush Never Left D.C. Until The Day After ChristmasDec 29, 2014
Like many Americans, U.S. presidents often take time off around the holidays. However, according to journalist Joseph Curl, who previously covered the White House, former President George W. Bush went on Christmas vacation in a way that stands in direct contrast to President Barack Obama. “[H]ere’s the thing: In December, we never left Washington, D.C., until the day after Christmas. Never. Mr. Bush and his wife, Laura, would always depart the White House a few days before the holi ...
