NYT cropped George and Laura Bush out of front page photo

Posted: Mar 9, 2015

Read into it what you wish. There are both liberal and conservative view points out there. Regardless of party, I think it is disrespectful to the former president. It was also the historical photo accepted as the official White House photo of the event.

Oh, look! They cropped out Turtle and Carrot and the other ones too! - sm

Oh, wait! Republican leadership didn't even bother to show up, but isn't it incredibly entertaining that the conservatives are whining that the former POTUS was cropped from a photo at an event that the current leadership could not be bothered to attend?

Perhaps they were too busy putting the final flourishes on their letter to Iran, you know, the one where the idiots concede that a future president could change an agreement with the stroke of a pen, thus unwittingly confirming that, of course, President Obama does have the Constitutional power they have heretofore claimed he does not have? Ooops!

That's not the least bit funny. (sm) - Abby

W and Laura are 2 class acts. You won't hear them whining about it on the news. And I do hope they are putting the final touches on the letter to Iran so they can get it sent ASAP.

If you call that class, then I guess so. - nana7

That chicken neck has no class whatsoever. Obama may go down in history for being the worst president in history but W will stand right next to him. He is a paranha even to his own party.

one must possess a bit of it themselves. We see less and less of it in today's world.

by having an official White House photo portray the likes of Sharpton over a former president. That speaks volumes.
Where? I didn't see Sharpton. - sm

Yeah, because nothing says class like your party leadership skipping the 50-year commemoration of the courageous civil rights march at Selma and then right-wing media turning it into a whine fest about the lefty victimization of white conservatives.

Not according to the photographer - or the NYT

I was happy to see Former President George and Laura Bush in Selma, they seemed to have all the patience in the world and were enjoying being there in that historic place. He should have a word with his former VP about not being a jerk and loving this country by participating in positive events like this.

A photographer for The New York Times says the publication did not crop former President George W. Bush and first lady Laura Bush from a photo featuring President Barack Obama, Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) and others leading a march commemorating the 50th anniversary of the “Bloody Sunday” clash in Selma, Alabama, over the weekend.

“Just so you know, President Bush was not cropped out, he was not in that frame because he was so far to our right,” photographer Doug Mills wrote in an email to POLITICO.

In a note to photo editors on Sunday, Mills said he didn’t file the shot with Bush included because it was overexposed.

“I did not even send this frame because it’s very wide and super busy and Bush is super-overexposed because he was in the sun and Obama and the others are in the shade,” Mills wrote, per Times Public Editor Margaret Sullivan.

In a post on the Times’ website, Sullivan wrote that the paper received many critical emails and tweets from unhappy readers over the weekend.
President Barack Obama, first lady Michelle Obama, Malia and Sasha as well as members of Congress, Former President George W. Bush and his wife Laura, and civil rights leaders make a symbolic walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, Saturday, March 7, 2015, in Selma, Ala.

“While it would have been moving and worthwhile to see both presidents in a front-page photograph, I see no evidence of politics in the handling or presentation of the photo,” Sullivan said.

Didn't they get Sharpton's ugly mug in there? - nm

were honorable men who put their country first in a time of crisis.   "Because Republicans have frequently likened President Obama to Jimmy Carter, we were curious to learn how candidate Ronald Reagan responded to the worst foreign policy disaster on Carter’s watch — the failed mission to rescue U.S. diplomats in Iran, resulting in the deaths of eight servicemen.  In April 1980, Reagan was still battling George H.W. Why George W. Bush Never Left D.C. Until The Day After ChristmasDec 29, 2014
Like many Americans, U.S. presidents often take time off around the holidays. However, according to journalist Joseph Curl, who previously covered the White House, former President George W. Bush went on Christmas vacation in a way that stands in direct contrast to President Barack Obama. “[H]ere’s the thing: In December, we never left Washington, D.C., until the day after Christmas. Never. Mr. Bush and his wife, Laura, would always depart the White House a few days before the holi ...
