It is really scary how the moderate evangelical community...sm - oldtimer

is so silent. We say the the moderate Muslims should stand up and say extremism is wrong and against our teachings and therefore delegitimize Muslim extremists, but no one is speaking up on the Christian side against the extremism and blasphemy we are seeing and hearing from the extreme right-wing "Christians" and "shock jocks". Very dangerous.

I agree. I also suspect some of our own more extreme - Colleen

[ In Reply To ..]
right-wing "Christians" do not see (or do not want to see) the similarities between the extreme Muslims and the extreme Christians. Both are equally dangerous when taken to extremes such as this. You would think that the "real" Christians would speak up.

I agree 100% with you - Hmmm

Okay, have you fallen over yet that I agree with you on something. Ha ha. You are so right on. When religion is taken to the extreme it is dangerous no matter what religion. The one's who tell them God is telling them to kill another group (whether it be Christians, abortion clinics, or doctors who perform abortions) I think religion is very very dangerous. But religious groups do not want to think they belong to a group of extremists. It's like my sister. She belongs to an occult but she doesn't see it an an occult. My aunt and uncle, they do also, and of course they don't see it as an occult what's funny to me is when they both call and tell me that the other belongs to an occult. :-)

You are so right - They do not see the similarities between the extremists of most groups.
This is the second time we have agreed on something! - Colleen

and yes, I am still standing! LOL. This type of stuff especially concerns me because there is always some wacko out there that may take it to heart and decide "God" is telling them to shoot somebody or something equally disturbing. As a former homeschooling parent (because of my son's disabilities, not because of relgious beliefs) I saw a number of parents who took religion to the point of being scary. It was especially sad because their kids were soaking it up as well. The level of extremism was clearly a very normal part of their upbringing and we were seeing some fairly overt predjudice on the part of these parents as well as their kids because my son, who has Aspergers sees life and everything else in a very literal, black and white sort of way. If you can not prove it or he can not see it, it does not exist to him. Did not go over well. I sometimes wonder about how these kids turned out and if there were just as extreme, or maybe worse? Scary stuff.
Amen sista. LOL. :-) - Hmmm

Well I remember correctly...didn't Bush say God told him to start the war, and didn't that nut case who killed the abortion doctor say God told him to, etc, etc. I'll bet you faced many challenges with your son, and I have to say "faith" would be a difficult one to explain. Here's a line from one of my favorite movies Kingdom of Heaven -

“I put no stock in religion. By the word religion I have seen the lunacy of fanatics of every denomination be called the will of god. I have seen too much religion in the eyes of too many murderers. Holiness is in right action, and courage on behalf of those who cannot defend themselves, and goodness.

The last paragraph of your post: "I put no stock in religion. By the word religion I have seen the lunacy of fanatics of every denomination be called the will of god. I have seen too much religion in the eyes of too many murderers. Holiness is in right action, and courage on behalf of those who cannot defend themselves, and goodness."

Very powerful words. I definitely believe in God, but I don't necessarily believe in religion.

If certain churches around our country are teaching their congregations to kill Obama (and I have to wonder if there are some), we are all in for American Jihad.

Anyway, just wanted to tell you I really like this post and your other post in this thread. :-)
Oops! I should have read your post, Nikki before I responded to Hmmmm - Colleen

LOL! Maybe it's a message that bears repeating. (sm) - Nikki

Anyway, I'm glad you posted (and I concur regarding the "great minds!") ROFL!!
Thanks Nikki - just came back down this far - Hmmm

I do believe we finally agree on something. LOL. I'm with you on believing in God but not religion.

I just really can't believe churches are teaching their congregations to kill Obama. I'm sorry but I just don't buy it. I need to see some proof (like an article) proving this is going on before I believe that. We have very different viewpoints on politics, so I won't go there on politics in this post.

Isn't that a great quote. It's from the movie Kingdom of Heaven. It's an excellent movie. I've watched it about 100 times (big big big Orlando Bloom fan). It's exciting and has action, It really shows how evil some of these groups who claim to be religious can be.

Anyway...not sure if you'll see my message. I haven't even looked this far down in awhile. Thanks for your post. I am glad we do agree on some things. :-)
Please see message. - Nikki

I don't know there are any churches that are actually doing that or not. (I should probably have made that more clear in my post.)

I was referring to the recent call to kill Obama, citing Psalms 109, which reads as follows:

Let his days be few; and let another take his office.
Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.
Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places.
Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labour.
Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favour his fatherless children.
Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out.
(Psa 109:8-13 KJV)

This entire story can be found at:

http://thechurchofjesuschrist.us/2009/09/christian-legitimization-of-the-assassination-of-president-obama/

(The link starts out with the fictitious scenario of someone killing President Obama.) There is also a video clip there of a segment on Rachel Maddow's show. If you don't like Rachel Maddow, I understand, but her guest on this clip is Franklin Schaeffer, son of Francis Schaeffer who was very heavily involved in the evangelical community in this country. (Franklin Schaeffer wrote a book, "Patience with God - Faith for People Who Don't Like Religion or Atheism." The beginning of the video includes Rachel showing all the merchandise for sale, including a teddy bear, referencing Psalm 109. If you don't like Rachel and don't want to see/hear about this, the actual interview with Franklin Schaeffer begins at approximately 2:12 on the videotape, and it is bone-chilling scary. I would highly recommend watching it and listening to his words.

So I'm just wondering if this is actually taught in some churches around some areas of the country and/or where/how they came up with Psalms 109 to lead them.

Apparently, some people believe this, and that's what frightens me so much. I don't want to see a civil war break out in this country.

And, YES, that's a wonderful quote! I have not seen the movie, but now I want to and will check it out.

Hope you have a great day.

P.S. I believe this is the SECOND (?) time we agreed on something. If we agree 3 times, does that mean we're "out"? LOL.
I see what you are saying - please see message - Hmmm
[ In Reply To ..]
Okay, I thought you had heard that churches are actually doing that, but by your post I can see what you are talking about. I'm going to read the link you provided but have to do it when I get another break.

I had not heard that Psalm you quoted. I just looked it up and read the whole thing. Egaads....in my opinion this is why religion is dangerous, and why I don't put much stock in the bible. If they take that bible verse and apply it to Obama, I'm sorry but they are just a bunch of sicko's.

You know I may not like the policies of what is going on in the current administration but I certainly do NOT NOT NOT want anything to happen to him. No wife deserves that and those poor girls to grow up without a father. That is the most horrible thing I could think of. What I'd like to see is a bunch of people in his cabinet and his advisers gone. I think they are feeding him bad information. Obama doesn't make the decisions himself. He is told what to do by his handlers (handlers meaning people over him that are working in the background (Axelrod, Emanuel, etc).

If anyone takes that verse and applies it to the current leader they are just SICK SICK SICK!!!!

I'm definitely going to check out the link you provided but later. I will also check out the Maddow segment. I used to watch her and used to like her, but lately she seems insufferable to me, but I will watch for the guests. That's like Hannity. I can't stand him, and I cringe at the stuff he says (he's a complete moron), but I like some of the guests he has on and if he could only shut up and let them speak it would be better.

My sister is "mormon" (I'd like to gasp when I say that LOL), but I will watch the video and then ask her if she has heard of it.

Oh you have to see the movie Kingdom of Heaven. I think you will really enjoy it. Get the extended version. There is so much more. I'd loan you mine, but I think I'll be watching it again for the 110th time. HA HA HA.
Personally, I put more stock in faith than religion - Colleen

but I suspect many do not know the difference.
Okay - you just really hit it right on with that statement - Hmmm

I too suspect many do not. It's sad to see it in my own family.

Just had to say great comment. Very perceptive.

As you suggest, there is a HUGE difference. I try to live my life in a good way and be a good person 24/7. I pray a lot, especially lately. This board is about the only thing that brings out the worst in me. I still visit every day and read it but don't post as much as I used to.

My mother always told me that I can go out in the middle of the woods and be just as close to God as I am in a church because God is everywhere. I understood that at a very young age. My mom was right, and so are you! :-)
I love that quote as well. - Colleen

I am beginning to think that once we got past all our tendencies to just react, we probably think more alike than we realize. I obviously lean a bit more left in some areas than you, and you obviously lean a little more right, but we are both fairly moderate in many ways and are reasonable, intelligent people who are learning to communicate calmly. Good to know. If only everyone could learn this lesson. (hint, hint) :)

I hope the real ones do and SOON. (sm) - Nikki

Colleen, when I tried to open the link, I received a warning that opening it might damage my computer. I don't know if someone somehow placed that message on there so less people would listen to the audio, but I'm sort of afraid to open it.

Did you or anyone else receive a similar message?

(For what it's worth, I received a "song card" from a "Secret Admirer" yesterday. Lord knows THAT ship has not only sailed but SUNK a long time ago, so I didn't open it, given my memory about some virus/the words secret admirer, I think.)

I assume this is about the Psalms passage that some people are using to urge the killing of Obama, and I can't tell you how much that frightens me because I'm afraid of another Civil War in this country. Talk about losing rights!

Anyway, I'll hopefully get the courage later to open your link because I like Ron Reagan and would really like to hear it. In the meantime, thanks for posting it. :-)
Nikki, I will just forward you the email that I got it from - Colleen
