Lincoln. General Orders No. 100:
"Military necessity does not admit of cruelty - that is, the infliction of suffering for the sake of suffering or for revenge, nor of maiming or wounding except in fight, nor of torture to extort confessions."
Washington. Charge to the Northern Expeditionary Force, Sept. 14, 1775:
"Should any American soldier be so base and infamous as to injure any [prisoner]. . . I do most earnestly enjoin you to bring him to such severe and exemplary punishment as the enormity of the crime may require. Should it extend to death itself, it will not be disproportional to its guilt at such a time and in such a cause... for by such conduct they bring shame, disgrace and ruin to themselves and their country."
I'll leave the FDR research to you, as I find the assertion tiring.

"The Senate Intelligence Committee report released Tuesday has a simple answer to that: Hell, no! According to the Senate report, the critical pieces of information that led to discovering the identity of the bin Laden courier, Ahmed al-Kuwaiti, (Ahmed the Kuwaiti) whose activities eventually pointed the CIA to bin Laden's hiding place in Pakistan, were provided by an al-Qaeda detainee before he was subjected to CIA coercive interrogation"
"The committee has given us.... a one-sided study - marred by errors of fact and

"I think most Americans would like the terrorists tortured, plain and simple."
Yeah, swell. At one time, most Americans thought people could be kept as slaves, and inter-racial marriages were evil, and women shouldn't be able to vote.
Speaking as an American, I'm with Lincoln on this. To borrow the quote from another good poster here:
"Military necessity does not admit of cruelty - that is, the infliction of suffering for the sake of suffering or for revenge, nor of maiming or wounding except in fight, nor of torture to extort confessions."

emotional instincts are not allowed to react to accusations. We have rules and expectations as to how prisoners will be treated. If you give up the rules because you think the enemy does not abide by them, you are then no better than your enemy.
An exerpt from Bob Kerry (Democrat) about the CIA - report.
[ In Reply To ..]
"I also do not have to wait to know we are fighting a war that is different than any in our country's past. The enemy does not have an easy to identify and analyze military. In the war against global jihadism, human intelligence and interrogation have become more important, and I worry that the partisan nature of this report could make this kind of collection more difficult.
I do not need to read the report to know that the Democratic staff alone wrote it. The Republicans checked out early when they determined that their counterparts started out with the premise that the CIA was guilty and then worked to prove it.
When Congress created the intelligence committees in the 1970's, the purpose was for people's representatives to stand above the fray and render balanced judgments about this most sensitive aspect of national security. This committee departed from that high road and slipped into the same partisan mode that marks most of what happens on Capitol Hill these days."

So, you're saying that the Republicans once again refused to do the job they were elected for?
At least they're consistent.
So the party that tried to blame violence on a video - is now provoking violence

TP Gets Its Wish--Thanks To Bush's Tax Cuts.Aug 05, 2011Quote from S&P on downgrade:
Compared with previous projections, our revised base case scenario now
assumes that the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, due to expire by the end of 2012,remain in place. We have changed our assumption on this because the majority of Republicans in Congress continue to resist any measure that would raise revenues, a position we believe Congress reinforced by passing the act. ...
That Bush Guy--not So Bad AfterallNov 09, 2010WASHINGTON -- The conventional wisdom, at least in some parts of the political press, held that President George W. Bush did the Democrats a disservice by not launching his book tour before the 2010 elections. The thought process being that a reminder of the follies of his administration would have caused series headaches for the Republican Party, which was pledging that they had moved beyond the Bush years.
On at least one policy front, however, it seems likely that the Obama White House would ...
