Romney's 1 to 2 years' worth of tax returns.

Posted: Jul 17, 2012

Here's one big problem I see with Romney not releasing more years of his tax returns:  How much do you anticipate that we'll learn about Romney's financial dealings by only seeing possibly up to 2 years' worth of tax returns that cover only years that he KNEW he was going to be running for president? Undecided

Obama's sealed college transcripts have been an issue longer than Romney's tax returns. Maybe they should have one of those infamous beer summits and O will release his transcripts and R will release his tax returns. Everyone wins.

Do you really equate.... - (see message)

...college transcripts with federal tax returns??

I have zero interest in seeing Romney's college transcripts; but I bet if Obama was refusing to release HIS tax returns, a lot of Republicans would be extremely suspicious and demanding to see them. Or do you suppose Republicans would be saying, "Hey, those are none of our business. He released last year's; that's good enough for me."

Hoping to find a smoking gun that will blast Obama - into an early retroactive retirement no doubt. nm

What's Obama being so secretive about? Just FYI, I don't really care, but it seems completely hypocritical to demand from someone what you are not willing to do yourself (Obama vs Romney)

I love George Bush and Texas. Obama will NEVER release his transcripts. He uses someone else's social security number and most likely is not even a citizen. What a dope.

hold a suds summit of their own, hang out for a couple of hours commiserating and crying in their beers. Once the alcohol has loosened their inhibitions, they could acknowledge the stinging defeat they have suffered at the hands of bipartisan majorities bombarding them with unrelenting ridicule, slap each other on the back and swap congratulations for a lost cause well fought, then quietly drift on off into the sunset along with their issues to nowhere and dead-end witch hunts. Poor things. They seem to have never been able to gain much traction outside their close circle of friends, but for the litigious lawyer loons who are more than happy to take their money from them over and over again, regardless of how many courts in how many states they have been laughed out of these past four years.

And the tax returners can join them, since we seem to be pointing - out what's important and not important to run

romneys tax returns - oldgraydog

I dont give a flying flip about someones tax returns, social security numbers (Obama uses several by the way) or birth certificates. What I want to know is can they run the country and take our jobs back from India, etc. This tax return business is nonsense. It does not matter how much money they gave to charity or how much money they made. It matters WHAT THEY WILL DO AS PRESIDENT and how they treat people. Give me a report on that.

I think it matters how much of their mass - nm

fortunes wind up in Swiss and other foreign bank accounts.

That's not something that everyday Americans have ever dealt with, once again proving that Romney only cares about the rich, specifically himself.

Why else would he be so frightened to show his tax returns?

For Romney supporters, would it.... - (see message)

[ In Reply To ..]
....matter to you if you found out that, in past years, Romney made millions and millions of dollars; but, because of tax shelters and write-offs of things like multiple homes and $77,000 in expenses for the Romney's horse(s), among other deductions and shelters that most Americans can't even conceive of, he ended up paying zero in taxes? Would that really not matter to you one little bit?

Here's why it matters to me. It's not because of envy of folks who make loads and loads of money. Good for them...truly. Whether they worked for it and earned it, invested wisely, or inherited it, that's their money and I don't begrudge them of it. I don't even begrudge them taking legitimate deductions that are allowed by law, within reason. (My gripe is that our tax system that allows some people to pay zero in taxes isn't fair at all, but that's another subject.)

Why it matters to me is that if people make hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars every year and somehow manage to pay no taxes, they are not contributing one bit to the care and management of this great country. You can despise "government" all you want, but we still need roads, schools (I do NOT want a totally uneducated underclass who will eventually be the ones becoming the work force in this country), our military forces, research and development of advances which private companies cannot (or won't) spend the money on, medical care for our elders and ourselves when we are no longer able to work and afford decent care on our own, fire and police protection....all the things we really take for granted in this country.

Does it make total sense if those of us who DON'T have the right tax shelters and loopholes have to pay the total cost of all the things that ALL Americans benefit from? I'm not wealthy, by any means, but my husband and I manage to get by from month to month; and I would feel terrible if I knew that someone who is REALLY struggling just to keep a roof over their heads or food on their table was paying all of MY fair share of taxes.

Now, I have no idea if the thing that Romney is trying to keep from becoming public knowledge is that he may have had some years where he paid extremely little or no taxes, but we'll never know if he doesn't release more than 1 to 2 years--only covering the time during which he knew he was running for president.

The reason that makes a difference to me, other than what I've said above, is that I don't want someone as president, in this period of great financial pain for so many Americans, who has no idea whatsoever how it feels to be in the shoes of the rest of us. Not even going back and remembering his childhood years will Romney ever have walked a mile in my shoes. In this particular time of our history, I just feel we need people in charge who can empathize with the great needs so many people have.

No one should even consider voting for him until he releases those returns.  It's bad enough that he probably paid no income tax but we need to know what he owes to the Chinese and Russians.  Their interests are not those of the U.S. and the American public needs to know exactly what has been going on.  We don't even know if he has really been under an IRS audit as he has never produced their letter saying they were going to audit him. ...
