There is no way I would give a dime to the Red Cross or United Way. They expect us to open our wallets when I feel they should donate at least 3/4 of their own salaries and they would STILL be making way more than we do.

I'm with you on the Red Cross. I would never donate to them - Backwards Typist

The why is personal and I have a good reason but won't go into it here.

some charity - no way

Have known a few people who had to depend on Red Cross after a disaster and guess what.... they were expected to PAY THEM BACK!!!!!!!! What??? They received help with temporary housing and basic necessities and RC wanted them to pay them back after they lost EVERYTHING they had. RIP OFF

My father was in the service stationed in New Guinea. His mother died suddenly and he wanted to get home for the funeral. They refused to help. So he missed out on his own mother's funeral!

This is why I will never donate to them, and yes, they do expect to be paid back after a disaster. They are totally heartless, probably afraid they won't be able to get those large salaries if they just "gave" away the help.

If they are a nonprofit agency, they should be stripped of that 'rating.'

I knew a lady who managed the local Salvatuion Army - and she used to use the

Salvation Army van as her personal vehicle. It was brand new and they used it to haul her daughter's horses to rodeos, et cetera. They also abused the cause in so many other ways. Donating is a wonderful thing and there are problems with every organization.

I give to the Salvation Army AND the USO. - Backwards Typist

Hubby donates to the Disabled Vets. We can't afford much, but give what we can when we can.

Years ago, both of us were without jobs and no unemployment and 3 kids. It was around Thanksgiving and we figured there would be no Thanksgiving for us when we got a knock on the door one day and there they stood with a complete dinner for us. I've always been thankful to them for that and give as much as I can squeeze out of our SS and I will keep giving as long as I can.

Am Vets is another rip off - cindy

My husband worked for them for several years as a manager of a thrift store and the woman who owned the company, Ms. Cain was a millionaire and lived in a huge mansion and had a cave and waterfall built on her property for her grandchildren to play in. The majority of your donations to Am Vets goes into her pocket!

In the devastating Big Bear CA wildfires years back, I lived on the back side of the mountain. After watchingly helplessly, I signed up at my local Red Cross chapter in the High Desert. I was immediately told to go open a shelter at the Apple Valley High School - with zero experience! So I go, meet the PD and start getting things together, waiting for the "shelter managers" to get there. We had hundreds of evacuees arrive with just the clothes on their back. Elderly, kids, families, pets. It was heartbreaking for sure - I cried on the way home every night. What was even more heartbreaking was that the Red Cross managers would'nt get the supplies we needed!!! Blankets, socks, clothing, toiletries, diapers, baby food - everything that was in the storages at the main RC center. They said that wasn't for us to use!!!! I was beside myself. I went to every single person there and made a list of what was needed. A couple of evacuees learned what I was doing and handed ME money, as I was going to go BUY the neccessary items - CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!! WTH!!! I went to Wal-Mart, explained what I was doing and they donated the majority of the purchases to me (they were already donating at a corporate level). I was absolutely appalled beyond words and filed a complaint post-disaster, as did the police dept, with the way things were handled.

I will NEVER EVER donate anything to ANY charity that I can't hand to them and see it go where it needs to after this. I live in Las Vegas now and take all of my clothes and other items to either the teen homeless shelter or the DV shelter. It goes right to those people right then.

IMHO, these huge charities are nothing more than "non-profit" cash cows to the board members - the larger they are, the less there is to left over to provide to those who truly need it... kinda like MTSOs ;) You're better off donating locally to a community family, DV shelter or orphanage/teen homeless shelter.

A Post Worth Reading.Sep 08, 2012
I've reprised a portion of a post made earlier so that perhaps more will read it.  I've slightly reformatted it for myself because I find long paragraphs harder on these tired old eyes recently. Here it is: <b>As for what I care about: *  I care that it took over 350,000 Americans to drop out of the workforce in order for the unemployment rate to drop to 8.1%. * I care that in 3 years this president has added more to our debt than any other president. * I care t ...

COLUMBINE STUDENT'S FATHER 12 YEARS LATER!! Guess our national leaders didn't expect this. On Thursday, Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, a victim of the Columbine High School shootings in Littleton, Colorado, was invited to address the House Judiciary Committee's subcommittee. What he said to our national leaders during this special session of Congress was painfully truthful. They were not prepared for what he was to say, nor was it received well. It needs to be ...

Is An Admin Assistant Course Worth It? Jun 30, 2016
I am considering taking an administrative assistant course. It costs almost $4000 and is supposed to touch upon office procedures, medical billing (not in depth), EMR, conflict resolution, among other useful subjects. This is cheaper than my community college and can be done at my own pace, within reason, from home. I need to get out of my almost min-wage MT job, but having been an MT for 25+ years, my non-MT skills are lacking. Completion of such a course seems to have multiple paths, in and ou ...

So If Secy Of State Was Worth $hundreds Of MillionsAug 27, 2016
$billions maybe? Because, you see, the real issue of the Clinton crime wave isn't just what they've done in the past, BUT WHAT THEY WILL DO GOING FORWARD IF THEY'RE NOT STOPPED. The Clintons are serial criminals, practicing their slimeball craft since their days in Arkansas. It's simply ridiculous for anyone to imagine that they'll suddenly become models of morality if they should reach the White House. ...

CBO Says Obamacare Will Cost 2 Million Jobs' Worth Of Dec 10, 2015
Yes, that's right.  Enough hours will be lost to equal 2 million jobs. The further we get with implementing Obamacare, the clearer it becomes that it's a total bust, with exchanges failing, costs going through the roof -  and now this from the CBO, not some right-wing nutjob.  It's unlikely that there are many conservatives who are surprised.  In fact, it's all going down exactly as we predicted.   Even so, it never fails to stun liberals when ...
