Cancer insurance, is it worth it

I've heard pros and cons about it. I am 63 with a very strong family history of cancer and the older I get the more family members are getting colon, prostate, kidney cancer, etc. I'm wondering if I should be proactive and get it now. Any thoughts on anyone who has used it? Right now I am on Medicaid, in another year or so will qualify for Medicare. Thanks

My gut response is "no" do not get it. If you have a family history of cancer, won't they charge you an arm and a leg for coverage? I always say "something will get me in the end." Follow good health guidelines and be healthy in the meantime. Don't spend your days and nights worrying. Just having good medical coverage I would say should suffice. Seems to me, every family has its "curse," whether it be cancer, heart disease, neurological disorders, mental illness, alcoholism, diabetes, whatever ... something will get all of us eventually. Have you researched your family genealogy? I found in my research on my ancestors, 85% lived extremely long lives in this country, going back to the Mayflower. I had two 7 times GGFs who were killed by Indians when young in Massachusetts and several great-great-grandmothers who died in childbirth! My mother lived into her 90s. Cancer insurance - Rant

My husband had cancer insurance. It paid a one-time lump sum of $5,000. This covered his deductible for two years. On the other hand, we paid out-of-pocket over $200,000 for lost wages, co-pays, drugs, testing that wasn't covered, etc. He said he'd never do chemo again. It really messed him up and there is no help for post-chemo patients. The doctors are all in denial about side effects. Once they were done administering the drugs they were pretty much done with him. He's two years out and still has severe side effects. I could go on and on about the lack of care for cancer patients. We had to beg and plead just for physical therapy and don't even think about asking for short-term disability. They had him returning to work on the last day of chemo. He didn't even know his name or DOB he was so sick. Between haggling with the doctors and insurance companies, I understand why cancer patients quit the whole thing.

I have a policy that I bought quite a few years ago. I always think I should drop it, but I am now more likely to get cancer now. My policy premium has not increased since I bought it, but the benefits have a cash bonus for every year I maintain the policy if I am diagnosed with an "internal" cancer. Melanoma counts as an internal cancer, but squamous cell or basal cell does not, I believe.

I bought mine because it pays mileage and temporary housing costs. I lived 100 miles away from a treatment center. I have seen people in my area struggling with those expenses. I believe the policy pays for a second opinion from either the Cleveland Clinic or the Mayo as a telemedicine consultation.

The company is reputable. I do not plan on dropping it because it covers both my husband and I.

What is cancer insurance? I have Medicare and a supplement. - sm

It covers anything and everything. Why have a policy that covers just cancer?

My policy is for living/incidental expenses while recovering - -- not eligible for MC yet. nm

was going to cut me off at age 65 so in the meantime, I got a another policy from another company. I think it only costs $27 a month for hubby and me.

Five years ago I got MFH sarcoma. I didn't remember it covering me but I called the company anyway and asked. Lo and behold, yes it covered me, too!!!! Thank heavens. They paid some of my hospital bill, my surgery, and my doctors. It didn't cover everything but it sure did help. I had no other insurance and was only 7 months away from Medicare. I negotiated some of my bills with the radiology doc and some hospital docs, and was able to pay some of them.

I'd at least look into it and see what everything covers. Can't hurt and make help.

I have just found out this past week that I have cancer. The primary is unknown at this time but there are mets to the liver. I will have a liver biopsy on Tuesday. Well, I had my surgery on New Year's Eve, and came away with an 8 cm incision wrapping around my dorsal forearm. I got the pathology back and it was a well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, 3 x 3.5 cm, all margins clear. Hi all, I have a guy friend who is only 42 years old that was diagnosed with stage 1B esophageal cancer. They were able to remove the tumor and he is now going through radiation treatments 3 days a week for 4 weeks.
