Really Great Things Our Country Has Accomplished

Posted: Apr 19, 2011

We really can do better. I know we can because we have. We just need to remind ourselves and our political leaders that there are solutions to problems, if we focus on the problems and not the politics.

When I hear that it is impossible for us to fund Medicare or continue giving milk to children who would otherwise go hungry, I wonder what happened to the old America. What happened to the America that used to be able to accomplish things beyond our expectations. Here are some of the ones I would like to remind our politicians about when they say it is impossible for us to keep our promises to fund Medicare and SS, etc.

Going to the moon

We won a few wars that seemed too difficult for us.

We managed to see that our poor were fed and our disabled were cared for.

We provided education for the masses.

I agree. But I also think it is time to prioritize. - Indy

[ In Reply To ..]
I think we are in a very different situation than we have ever been in before as a country. We are running a 14-trillion dollar debt, are soon going to have to raise the debt ceiling for the 3rd time in 2 years, our economy is bad, revenues are down as we have so many unemployed...it is time for some hard choices.

We just had the S&P downgrade our sovereign debt to negative...that is not a good signal to the foreign countries who hold our paper.

This is a very, very serious situation.

So maybe we need a new list, of priorities if someone would start one - SAM

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm not sure how to start one about issues or problems or priorities. I think it would be good to see exactly what we need to fix. Like Dr. Phil says, you can't fix a problem unless you acknowledge it.

Acknowledging the problems IS the place - Indy

to start. And instead of blowing holes in the other guy's plan, just suggest an alternative. That is how dialog begins and answers happen. Congress needs to stop thinking about the 2012 campaign and do what is necessary to snatch us back from the brink...BOTH sides, just my opinion.
I agree. - SAM

This is a great point, and you are so right, but the reason - frustratedMT

[ In Reply To ..]
that we can't do these things anymore the way we used to in this country is because back in those days, people worked, and they worked hard for everything single thing they had. There weren't many people who were just too lazy to work and were put on disability just because the gov didn't want to bother with them, or those who just refused to work for a couple dollars less than what they were willing to take. Unfortunately, the hard workers are fewer and fewer.. and we are the ones that have the shoulder the burden.

Good point, and another thing is, there are few jobs these days - Exploring Ideas

[ In Reply To ..]
You're right, and I hope that I'm not misinterpreting what you're saying, but we don't have the work ethics that we used to have.

Another problem for our country is, they have shipped all our jobs overseas. We need jobs in order to get back to financial health both individually and as a nation. The fact that there are very few jobs anywhere, no matter what kind of work you do, is making us cranky at each other, at our political leaders, etc. I'm not sure we can get jobs back, but until we do, we're in a sinking ship.

Along those lines, can anyone think of any kind of work that still is in good condition here in our nation? I really can't. Maybe landscaping.

I think that a college eduction isn't as worth as much - as it used to be. (sm)

[ In Reply To ..]
There are great jobs out there and great trade schools to learn a trade.

Mechanics, plumbers, electricians, and even undertakers make GOOD money and are hard workers.

I just think trade schools are given little thought when compared to a college degree.
Recently I had some remodeling done and even those tradesmen are hurting - because people can't afford their services
[ In Reply To ..]
Bad weather damaged my roof and parts of my house, which thankfully was covered by insurance. As the different tradesmen came in, I asked them how business is for them. Each and every one of them said it was slow because people aren't doing much of anything unless it's an emergency. Most of them said there are plenty of emergencies due to weather, etc., but it isn't as busy as it used to be.

It's not the hard workers that are fewer and fewer; it's - the JOBS that are fewer and fewer.nm

very time now. Once upon a time, neighbors depended on neighbors, family on family. Not anymore. So many of us expect the gov to take care of our every little need. Because of that, we, as a nation, have allowed our gov to become the beast it is.
I don't see our government as a beast. - Proud American

I see problems that need to be solved, some programs that need to be adjusted or reformed, but not dismantled. It is not okay to throw out the good because of the bad. If we did that, we would have no presidents at all, because we have had good and bad presidents, no Congress at all, for the same reason. Taking it further, we could not have dinner, because some people are obese and some dinners have been bad. No! We identify the problems and fix them, without throwing out what is good and helpful in our country, the things that make us better than some other systems that don't care about people.

Or is it just a figure of speech? Here are my thoughts on a couple of issues you touched on. They are all kind of different things. I can see going to the moon, finding cures for diseases and things like that in the great things our country has accomplished. I think feeding the children, poor, and hungry and other things like that people do from the kindness of their hearts. People have great compassion and its hard to see anyone person or animal suffer. Provided education for the masses? That's kind of a strange way to put it, but yes, every person living here has the opportunity to attend school, but to say that is a great thing our country has accomplished would be like saying driving a car, getting a job, cooking a meal, walking down the street, etc. I just don't find going to school in the same category as going to the moon or finding cures for diseases, etc.

But then none of these issues have to do with politics, but maybe because it's late I might be on the wrong board, except it says politics at the top.

If you are speaking about great things the country has done political wise, yes there are a number of things, but times are different now. Sure there will always be great things people accomplish, but politics isn't what it used to be. If people could listen to ideas without associating it with a political party that would be a good start, but as it is right now most people before listening to an idea want to know which party is talking about the idea and they've made up their mind ahead of time whether they are going to agree or not even listen. It's very sad to see what has happened over the course of the past 30 years and longer.

In my opinion - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Politics has become a business instead of being a politician to serve our country. Somewhere we lost integrity and it has turned into just greed. I guess it is just the whole country that has turned that way.

Another thing, I think the country started going down the tubes with the creation of the internet. Look at us. We are all chatting and not even knowing who we are chatting with. Back in the old days, people had to go out of their houses to be able to communicate with people. Neighbors visited and helped neighbors. Nowadays, we don't even know who are neighbors are in a lot of cases. The internet has created the opportunity for more of our jobs are going overseas instead of staying here. In many ways, the internet is good, but I think it was a big downfall of things also.

In answer to your questions - sm

First, about the milk, there are proposals to cut the program that provides milk to poor children who otherwise will not have milk. Some will say their parents deserve that. Maybe the parents do, but the children will be better and more productive citizens of America if they have proper nutrition and a good start on their education.

As far as the other items on the list, the topic is, whether America is capable of doing great things, solving enormous problems. Most of the items on that list show that yes, we can, we have, and we will. We cannot just throw up our hands and say the problem is too hard for us so we will have to undo all of the good programs that have been put in place over the years, and put our faith in the rich, hoping they will give handouts to us, who will be part of the 'poor and needy' if the trend continues. That's why I would start with plugging the tax loopholes and even bringing in more revenue by raising some taxes while we are cutting things that do not take the necessities away from the middle class and the poor.

And when they awoke, they parrotted those things that they had heard. Not correctly, but what do parrots know? The left objected to loss of our civil rights through the wiretapping and data ...
