Our country needs help.

Posted: Sep 30, 2012

Our nation is broke, broke, broke. We are in debt to the tune of over 16 trillion and mounting due to interest alone daily. We are going to be in only more trouble if we keep borrowing to give money to other countries and stimulus bills to create jobs and give to other solar panel companies like Solyndra (latest recipient SoloPower). GM is recalling over 40,000 cars for repair after the losses already taken. The entitlements we have paid into such as Medicare and Social Security are going to be gone unless we make some lasting changes. The Affordable Health Care Act is going to lay a due bill at our door that will knock our socks off (check out the taxes/penalties and cost of implementation involved). Nothing we need to do is going to be easy, pleasant, or fast. That is the reality. While I know some of you are going to hit me with economists promising 12 million jobs, etc., no one can give me any specific details of where they will come from (bills that call for borrowing more money and more government creation do not count because that will add to the problem that already seems unfixable). If you read up on it, many economists (some of those who correctly predicted the financial problems of 2008), are saying we are heading for a deep recession, possibly depression in 2013. The world is in chaos with debt, tax, and entitlement problems in Europe, violent unrest in the Middle East, and coverups, fraud, and ongoing investigations here at home. Whether you want to believe it or not, we are facing serious threats against our freedom of speech (and you naysayers who like to strike like a rattler are going to miss it the most when it's gone). I do not know if a change in the President is enough to even begin to straighten out any of the above, as it seems that it is all so far gone it is scary. I am sure you know where I am going with this. A winning smile and a good line is just not enough to win my vote again this time. I am frightened to think what another 4 years will look like. I am going to vote for Romney. He may not be able to fix things, but I know Obama can't, so I will give someone else a try.

...I'm not sure ANYone does. I do believe that "fear" has been the GOP's stock in trade for a long time, though, and I don't want to make a decision based solely on "fear."

I need to hear more than "trust me" before I can judge if I think Mitt Romney's plans make sense. Here's a bit of Paul Ryan's interview with Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday discussing Romney's tax plan. (You'll get lower tax rates and thus send less to Washington. Gosh, gee whiz--sign me up for that! If only it were that simple.)

“You haven’t given me the math,” Wallace said in one exchange.

“I don’t have the ... It would take me too long to go through all of the math,” Ryan responded.

“But let me say it this way,” he went on. “You can lower tax rates 20 percent across the board by closing loopholes and still have preferences for the middle class for things like charitable deductions, home purchases, for health care. What we’re saying is people are going to get lower tax rates and therefore they will not send as much money to Washington.”

It doesn't list the numbers, but is the outline of jobs and economic plan.

That's all well and good, but... - (see message)

....as Chris Wallace said, they haven't provided the math that backs up what they say they can do. Again, "trust us" is just not enough for me.

I think Paul Ryan's slip of the tongue, saying, "I don't have the...." before he changed it to not having enough time to go into the math might have been closer to the truth.
Yeah, sorry, it's all I've got... - SK1

It's frustrating, I know.

I confess, though, that if all the numbers were presented I probably wouldn't be able to wrap my head around it. The multilevel tax structure makes me want to stick a hot poker in my eye when I try to delve into understanding it.
He's avoiding numbers because economists have - examined them and they do not work. NM

Harry Rosen of Princeton University.....

"In this paper, I analyze the Romney proposal taking into account the additional income that might be generated by economic growth. The main conclusion is that under plausible assumptions, a proposal along the lines suggested by Governor Romney can both be revenue neutral and keep the net tax burden on high-income individuals about the same. That is, an increase in the tax burden on lower and middle income individuals is not required in order to make the overall plan revenue neutral."

Trying to read the entire document almost made my eyes bleed, but I provide the link for everyone's reading enjoyment.....

Good post, but IT'S ABOUT CONGRESS THIS TIME. Neither Obama nor Romney - can do better with the current congress. SM

[ In Reply To ..]
Congress is broken, totally corrupted by special interests, both houses, all parties.

Even Romney would be unable to gain cooperation from the radical social and/or economic conservatives if he disappointed them, which he must in order to get anything done, much less more and better.

We've elected too many amateurs and extremists who either do not understand or do not care to understand what is needed to fix our problems.

A significant fraction now even thinks the world is coming to an END soon. They have a different idea of what our problems are and how they are going to be fixed by Someone, to put it mildly.

The divisions within the GOP are every bit as deep as those between the GOP and the Dems.

Too many in both parties are dancing to the tune of those who bought their positions for them.

Districts are now gerrymandered so tightly that almost none can be voted out except by overwhelming majorities.

OUR one big advantage is that they all seem to love their jobs and will do almost anything to hold onto them.

Studies have shown our elected reps pay ALMOST NO ATTENTION TO THE WISHES OF THE ORDINARY 70% THESE DAYS!! We need to show them by this election that we will not put up with that any longer.

If your representatives have not been working hard for you this session, vote to throw the bums out. Don't worry about who replaces the corrupted, the incompetents, and the intransigents. The next batch will pay more attention, regardless of what label they wear.

Romney has no plan for - anything except to

[ In Reply To ..]
strengthen the plutocracy which is his main constituency. Obama, probably more of the same, but at least he will make the pretext of throwing folks like me a few of the crumbs.

That's why I cannot honestly vote for Obama - The "pretext" - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't want someone who is just going to make a pretext. I want a leader that is going to actually do something, i.e. throw me a few of the crumbs. Obama can't/won't do it. Actually he can do it. If he can bypass congress and start a war he has the power to throw me a few crumbs, but he doesn't/won't. I cannot honestly vote for someone who shows they don't care about people like me.

I believe Romney can and will help people like me and throw me not only a crumb, but a whole piece of bread. Ryan will give me the butter for the bread.

Posters here keep saying he doesn't have a plan or this or that, but that is not correct. He does have a plan. He and Ryan are what the country needs. They understand what people like me are going through and they actually care. Of course people who support Obama will say that is not true, but it is true and because of what I've read about them, what they have done in their political careers, plans they have supported and bills they have not supported, what they have voted on and what they have spoken against, what they would do to strengthen our relationship with foreign countries and that they would bow to no one I feel they are the better candidates for the positions and nobody here on this board is going to change my mind. That's how I feel and my gut feeling, and knowledge about the candidates is what I'm going to be going by when I vote. And please don't anyone ask me for any links. I've read too many to count. I've read the websites of both candidates. I've read Romney's/Ryan's voting history and what they will do to help the country, and I've lived through the last 3 years. So don't ask me for any plans, because 1.) people can find it for themselves it they are interested and 2.) I will be told my link is not credible or they'll cut it down without even reading.

All I'm saying is Romney/Ryan do have a plan and they are the only hope this country has - with a new congress to get the country back on track.

I'm for:

1. Lower unemployment. Too many people need to and WANT to work.
2. Stable housing market.
3. Good education for our kids.
4. Social security fixed.
5. Medicare fixed.
6. End to bail outs for companies that end up taking the money and shipping jobs overseas.
7. End to off shoring jobs.
8. Strong military.
9. End of wars we should not be in.
10. End to hunger in our country.
11. Food stamps and welfare programs within reason.
12. Friend to all countries. Get back the respect we used to have.
13. A budget.
14. Decent health care for all.

There is more, but that is what I am for and that is why I will be voting for Romney/Ryan.

Go Romney/Ryan 2012 - hoo-ah!

hits "Dislike" to a post, but I think that asking that misses the point that when people hit "Dislike," it doesn't mean that they dislike the OP or dislike their right to the opinion, etc. Sometimes it's the only way others have to indicate that they don't agree with 100% of the post. It's not always mean-spirited, in my opinion. "Dislike" might be a misnomer in some cases....it's just the only option people have to say they disagree with at least part of what that person has posted.

In the case of this thread, I would in no way interpret it to mean that the "dislikers" don't like this country or don't think we need help in this country. Is that how you interpret it? Good, decent people can disagree with the method to go about achieving something.

BTW, I'm not even one of the people who hit "Dislike" on this....just saying you can't always take the "Dislike" votes too literally.

Much of what the OP speaks to is based in rhetoric and not fact. It's hard to make heads or tails out of exactly what she is saying. I wonder what "coverups, fraud, and ongoing investigations" is supposed to refer to.

And therein lies the biggest part of the problem, IMO. - Aunt Sue

Much of what the responding poster speaks to is based in a sour personality. It's easy to make out from what she is saying that she has nothing of any value to add to the conversation except the usual belittling of others that in no way offers anything constructive.
