and I think, but not sure, oil. They have rubies, emeralds, and more. It's a shame that they have never followed through on any discoveries like this. They could have had a decent lifestyle for the people and then the Taliban and Al Quaeda would never have had a chance.

Thinking about it, could it be that those terrorist groups already knew about this and that's why they're fighting so hard to keep the area?

I am a gemstone collector, and I have several stones from - Really?

Afghanistan in my collection.

I wondered the same thing; seems like the natural resources, especially the gold and lithium, would be a much mire lucrative comodity than opium. Now that this is common knowledge, I have to wonder then who else is going to be willing to jump in and fight over these plentiful resources, and you can bet the Taliban/Al Qaeda is going to fight to the end to hold on to them, and what kind of power will that give them to increase their terrorist circles?

The Great One Speaks On AfghanistanNov 21, 2013
On November 20 (yesterday) George W. Bush (AKA "The Great One") was on Jay Leno. Here what he said about DRAWING DOWN IN AFGHANISTAN: “I don’t know how big the footprint needs to be, but I do know that if we leave too early, women and young girls will suffer a lot,” Bush said of U.S. troops’ exit from the country. I just do not understand why the Republicans are not happy. ...

AfghanistanDec 02, 2009
Thoughts on our plans for Afghanistan anyone? I'm never pro-war, but a sudden pullout could be very dangerous for us as well as the Afghan people. I would very much like to see American aid based on "performance". Karzai may have been elected, but he's corrupt and inept.  Hawks are uncomfortable with a timetable being announced. I like it, myself. It gives the Afghan government an incentive to get their poo together, get people trained. It puts the cards on the table for everyon ...

She's been reporting on Afghan since 1996. She certainly knows the region and explains the Taliban and al Qaeda. Not a long read; worth reading. ========================== (CNN) -- October has been the deadliest month for the US and NATO militaries fighting in Afghanistan as well as UN workers trying to organize an election runoff. Surely the surge in deaths serves to underscore why Afghanistan matters. For all the debate happening away from the battlefield, here are a couple of importan ...

Reminder: Obama Promised War In AfghanistanAug 23, 2017
On Monday, President Donald Trump laid out his strategy for the war in Afghanistan going into 2018 and beyond. While reaction to the strategy was somewhat mixed, there was one thing that stuck out: Wait, didn't former President Barack Obama say that we'd be done with this by now? Why yes, yes he did. Let's take a trip in the way-back machine and look at some now-regrettable tweets, dug up by Fox's Stephen Miller: FACT: Unlike President Obama, Romney has no plan to ...

Keith Olbermann Special Comment - AfghanistanDec 01, 2009
This is for those who like and understand Keith Olbermann. It's about our occupation and war against Afghanistan. There's very little, if anything, that I disagree with him about. I hope those who do not care for Olbermann will at least listen to the comment and then give their opinions so we can have a real debate on this thread and not just drive-by one-liners like "I hate Olbermann" or "I hate MSNBC" or other comments along those lines. This is an OPINION piece by Keith Olberm ...

U.S. Identifies Vast Riches Of Minerals In AfghanistanJun 14, 2010
Think of the potential! Amazing! The war, the terrorists--all of it. WASHINGTON — The United States has discovered nearly $1 trillion in untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan, far beyond any previously known reserves and enough to fundamentally alter the Afghan economy and perhaps the Afghan war itself, according to senior American government officials. The previously unknown deposits — including huge veins of iron, copper, cobalt, gold and critical industrial metals like lithiu ...

Afghanistan And Horse Comment By Obama Last NightOct 23, 2012
Here's a story and link of the following: Although the glory days of the United States Cavalry are long gone, horses still serve the military. At Smith Lake Stables, adjacent to Fort Bragg, N.C., 36 horses are owned by the U.S. government and serve their country in two assignments. In one assignment, they act as equine ambassadors, linking the civilian public to the military. The horses are used in an annual summer camp program and in weekly day camp activities for home-schooled kids. But ...

State Department Leaves Contractors In Afghanistan WithoutAug 15, 2016
Surrounded by increasing violence and instability, U.S. contractors left behind in Afghanistan are raising alarm about the potential for another Benghazi tragedy, saying the State Department isn't sharing with them a plan to evacuate if insurgents launch a debilitating attack. The concerns are heightened by the fact that many of those civilians doing the security and nation-building work of the U.S. government hold sensitive security clearances, making them an attractive target for the e ...

Obama Needs To Stay At The WH During Middle East ProtestsSep 13, 2012
This article is by Scott Paulson and over the attacks and I completely agree with him. Following protests in the capital of Egypt this week, the deadly attack on the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi, Libya that took the life of four Americans yesterday, and the latest aggressive protests at the U.S. Embassy in Yemen’s capital that are occurring today, President Barack Obama needs to stay in Washington, D.C., suspend campaigning, and address the threats against Americans in the Middle East.
